What is critical is how much and how soon can it be brought to market; and at what cost both in terms of dollars and energy used to harvest it. Once it takes more than a barrel of oil's worth of energy to get a barrel out of the ground, that field will be abandoned.

anything even near that output ratio is poor for energy economics. it takes two barrels to get three from tar sands, it was one to thirty in the early days of conventional oil production. and there will never be 9 billion people on this earth. don't believe.
