  • I turn my radio down to 5w quite often in the winter on 75m to show people what 5w can do to a good antenna. I have made contacts on 75m with less than 0.5w just to show people it can be done.

This is a great video to show people what can be done using QRP. Back during the peak of solar cycle 23, I would talk (using SSB) to Europe everyday using less than 1w pep on 10m from Michigan, while using a 3 element Yagi up 12m. Plus, I have made contacts using CW with far less than 100mw on 10m, too!

  • It makes sense when you do the maths. 30db more than 100 millwatts =100 watts. If someone running 100 watts is 30 over 9 with you, you should be S9 exactly with him.

This video proves it's less about the amount of power you use, and all about the antenna. Thanks for posting it.

  • Wonderful video! QRP rules! 73, S56VDI, JN76UM

  • Very nice work Leif, an example of what can be done with QRP.

  • I WISH ICOM WOULD BRING OUT ANOTHER QRP RIG REPLACEMENT.

  • Great job Leif!!! M3VZQ -- Q.R.P

  • Well done Leif!!! I'm just starting on the Amateur journey after a long interest in CB (serious DX stuff not the awful AM stuff) and SWL - and this video is inspiring. I REALLY want to get hold of a 703 they just look a fantastic unit. Of course being an ex CBer DX I never thought of it as a QRP form of communication - 12 watts is what you had (in Australia) and thats all you were going to ever get! all the best,

    Scott from Devon UK.

  • woaw !! fantastic !! you can kissed your great antenna old man ! I never do JA station with 500 mw and my simple dipole :-) good job ! 73

  • @F8FCA Yes, you can. I have worked all over the world with less than 1w and a dipole on every band from 10m-40m. I have also done some DXing on 75m with less than 10w; so it can be done.

  • Thanks Leif for this great video. I like the pics of your home with the antenna and the background rolling hills. Also a great selection of music. As with the comments below, this has inspired me to try QRPp.

  • Someone gave you a bad vote for this video? How RUDE. It's a great video! Well done. It proves it yet again - it's all about the antenna! You've inspired me to turn the output power down on my Icom 706MkIIG and see how I go doing some QRP! Thanks for the inspiration & I'm subscribing to your videos! Thanks! VK3FCRG Australia

  • what is this all about?

  • deadleader1 >

Thank you for your interest in my video but I feel its unfair with a bad vote just because you dont understand what this is all about. This is a hobby where we are making contacts all over the world with a low power transmitter.

Regards from Leif LA9BM in Norway.

  • Its not the power, its the antenna that get you out and also the hight of the antenna. Good vid 73 de 2E0YQC
