I wish Ed and Cameron would work together again. But, the fact that Ed is in The Abyss and none of Cameron's other masterpieces, it kind of makes The Abyss really special.
I'm glad Ed survived The Abyss though. lol.
You can hate Cameron's perfectionism all you want, but look at the results.
I personally think The Abyss was Harris's finest hour.
A trooper? Id have to see what he was paid to do this film. But if that amount is high, then I wouldnt necessarily call Ed a "trooper", as I am willing to endure lots of hardships if paid enough. Remember that many people risk their lives daily for chump change.
Im sure they were all paid huge amounts of money to do this film. But for some, the making of it was the motivation. I think it even made some blind to the reality of actor safety. Why was ed harris made to hold his breath? The real shot is simply him being dragged...you dont even see his face!
I loved the drowning scene - Mary and Ed are truly great actor. Their emotions were so palpable. Mary deserved to get an Oscar nomination for Lindsey!
Man, that scene with the rat was hard to watch, but part of me wishes it was still in the final cut (at least in the DVD i have in the UK) because it's still fascinating how that technology actually exists. To see it in action is quite spectacular. This movie went all the way in every regard.
It's true that reality is far more compelling than make believe. This film was as real as it gets (abyssal alien races not withstanding).

How does the veterinarian know it was painful for the rat? Here's a clue Cameron, the animal was agonizing. This is an insane film, it would never be done today.
@InkyEnston I had no idea it was so real for the actors. I thought films are made with high comfort levels to actors, since they really aren't animals like Ed Harris said. Their job is artistic and requires security and comfort. These guys really were like hard-core extreme divers.

That drowning scene had me on the edge of seat more than any of the special effects.
