  • @GRINDHASSUS what a awfull story! May god give you strengt!

  • Absolutely fantastic song, one of Cohen's best. Though I don't know why everyone feels the need to capitalise He, Him and His when referring to God and Jesus.

  • lol

  • What gave plan B the right to shit on this song?

  • My mother's name is suzanne, I have tears in my eyes immagining that she was once just like suzanne from this song, just like me.

  • Suzanne, my eternal muse.

  • and I want to travel with him,and I want to travel blind

  • Makes me so proud to have such a name!

  • Leonard Cohen: what a romantic.

  • patsxskip this is my Daughter's name it was decided when we were having our Son but as luck woulg have it Suzanne "Fed me Tea and Oranges that came all the way from China" LOVE IT

  • Bugger off, idiot. Suzanne was written about an actual woman in his life. HE WROTE THE SONG!!!!

  • Montreal magic.

Brings it all back, happiest and saddest days of my life.I did sit down by that river.

  • Corrado1860 All singer songwriter and even famous authors are sent songs and poems by ghost writers. I was one for 49 years. Only a hobby. I was a professor and psychologist. I loved to write songs, books, poems, etc that required thinking. Cohen was not "cheating". MOST FEEL THEIR OWN INTERPRETATION THAT IS REFLECTED IN THEIR PRESENTATIONS. THIS MAKES THE SONG THEIR OWN ! Who is better then Cohen when doing this? And many of Cohen's songs are like surrealistic paintings. Enjoy interpretations

  • I have privy to inside information of the music business. Cohen is no different then my favorite writer, not including myself. Ha I was a big fan and still am of Neil Diamond personally. I was asked to give his introduction at the Hall of Fame induction. I remember when I first found out that he didn't write all his songs, but the lable says "by Neil Diamond". I was shocked. A ghost writer wrote Lady Magdalene and only the writer knows for sure what he was writing about. (cont) surrealistic

  • @e61807 with no disrespect, i think your language and philosophical opinions are far too advanced for youtube! lol

  • This was one of the few poems that Cohen did not write himself. But neither did Neil Diamond. Take a listen to Neil sing "Lady Magdalene". I can definitely see where the same person could have written both songs. These two artists both talk about Jesus walking on the water. I am not sure a Jew would write about Jesus as both a man yet divine. Walking on water seems divine. Neil also claims this song as his own. When first released (I have the original) the label said "artist unknown". Ghost ?

  • @e61807 Are you sure?. In Cohen's personal site it os definetely tstated that Suzanne is "written by Leonard Cohen, Stranger Music Inc, (BMI)". So, do you think he would cheat on that?

  • @e61807 " I am not sure a Jew would write about Jesus as both a man yet divine. Walking on water seems divine." WTF?

  • What a poet what a voice . Dreamy song - Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river.... and you know that she's half crazy but that's why you wanna be there .... Leonard Cohen I love you.

  • thank you so much for this lovely upload!

  • @lovemaskin You're welcome!

  • und nochmals suzanne!

  • I was a teenager when this came out. Still beautiful.

  • I really like this piece of music but i don`t understand what the lyrics mean. I`ve listened to it a few times to see if i can work out what Cohen is singing about but i can`t. Can anyone please explain the lyrics. Thanks.

  • @acidhouse100 You mean it? Well, he meets a girl who is not quite there with her mind. He is going to tell her it's gonna be just sex, no love, when she gets him on her wavelength (kind of telepathy) and lets the river say to him: No way man, you've always been my lover! And then he understands it's pointless to use the cathegories of normal reasoning - and well, he lets himself go to the same wavelength and thinks that's for ever, like children leaning out for love for ever... You get it now?

  • @corrado1860 Yes that has helped thanks. My original interpretation of the lyrics was that they were strangers who had just met, they were going to have sex and she (Suzanne) was a bit crazy.

Now you`ve kindly explained it to me in a bit more depth i understand that she sort of seduces him and he succumbs to her mind, the flowing river and the whole experience.

Like i said previously i`ve always liked the song but never fully understood the lyrics so thanks again.

  • @acidhouse100 Glad it helped. You know, this song is kind of legendary to those of us whe were about in the 70's... We all romanticcaly dreamed that we would one day meeet a Suzanne who would feed us with tea and oranges that came all the way from China.... I first heard the song in London in the company of my then girl friend Linda... Very sweet memories. <)

  • @acidhouse100 ....and of course there is much more than that in the song. But that was for brevity. Let me know if it helped you. Take care

  • Leonard Cohen has been a heavy smoker.. His voice sounds different in his younger years. I actually like his voice better now.

  • @420debsc also with age, one voice gets deeper. I agree, his voice is more mature.

  • So many grocer's apostrophe's.

  • this album this songs on is amazing people, get it.

  • Such a beautiful song. This was the song that got me interested in Leonard Cohen.

  • mi catapulta agli anni della mia gioventù

  • Saw Ian McCulloch do this partly live for Echo And The Bunnymen......"And she feeds you Fyffes bananas that come all the way from China"!!!.......Great post cheers

  • 5 people have never felt a woman's touch

  • My mom's name is suzanne and her favourite food is tea and oranges and we live by the ocean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COOL :) she loves this song<3

  • Great song but too similiar to hey, that's no way to say goodbye

  • didnt plan B sample this song in one of he's songs? dont remember which one

  • @juniwilliams This song was sampled by Plan B, he made up a fictional character called 'suzanne' and it was about the Camden Ripper.

  • it sounds more like Bob Dylan...

  • R.E.M. credited Mr. Cohen on their song "Hope" because it sounds so similar to this. And it does!

  • This is the only song I can sing from start to finish. It was written.

  • You can hear the boats go by...

  • Half crazy ?

les fous se sont toujours les autres. Il ne faut pas confondre perception et socialisation

  • thumbs up if u looked for this song after hearing plan b's suzanne

  • One of the most haunting, poignant songs -- as good as anything Dylan or the other 60s giants wrote. Back in the 70s, before radio sucked, this would float in every now and then and really take hold in a mysterious way and linger on for the longest time.

  • REM was very generous to this lovely song. In my opinion, it is different...I bet Leonard Cohen loves 'Hope' with REM

  • A legendary Dutch artist, Herman van Veen, made a beautiful cover of this track

    /watch?v=JZxIt4Nd-Rc

I think it's even more gorgeous than this wonderful number

  • Beautiful.

  • uh how do you know that last part is about touching His body? derp

  • if I start to forgive and apologize in whisper and tears while listening to this song it means music is God. Thenk you, Leon.

  • I love leonard cohen, he sounds so young!! Fave song & chelsea hotel!

  • PERFECT POEM!

    PERFECT MELODY!

    TOUCHING...

  • let me tell you that this is most assuredly leonard cohen i first heard this song from his original album in 1967 when my english teacher played him to the class out of the whole class guess only i fell in love with his voice his words and the way he delivers the lesson to us sadly though my life has been lived through his songs and i never did become any good at english. pray he lives forever.

  • plan B!

  • wow

  • I was named after this beautiful song <33

  • Yes! this is the original and it was in his debut album in 1967. his voice changed quite a bit over 40 yrs eh? Can you believe he's been amazing for such a long time? ... love love love him

  • It does seem a bit fast, and therefore high pitch, but seems to be Cohen.

  • me exei magepsei dn mporw na stamathsw na to akouw me kanei na niw8w xaroumenh me ta3ideuei..........apla to latreuw!!!!!!

  • just now i know it was him who song this because i only knew the dutch version from herman van veen

  • thumbs up if you searched this because of plan B.

  • Wnderful song. I listened in italian, sang by Fabrizio DeAndrè, 'cause I'm italian. But there aren't no comparison.

  • man, this song is made to get high while listening to this...fucking great!

  • I love the mental image I get from this. "She is wearing rags and feathers from salvation army counters."

  • COOL!!!

  • i was at a london party in 68 and this is how i remember him when he burst on the scene with his new and original sound...i wish he would still sing like this but i guess hes wiser and older now..it seems he does a parody of himself as gloomy leonard

  • this song is awesome

  • wonderful version !!

    i love this song !

  • easily the best lyrics ever written

  • having known and felt nina's version for a lifetime i was always a little scared to hear cohen's original and i have to say it was worth the wait this is brilliant! we all know a cohen written cover version of one tune or another that has been done by someone with a voice to die for (jeff buckley's hallelujah?) the way nina shreiks 'there are heroes in the seaweed' chills the spine its such a good version but life feels a little more complete after hearing this! love ya cohen x ta for upload!

  • So old and still so beautiful!!! (must be around 1975...)

  • My name is Suzi..and I'm proud to sing a song about it Suzi:)

  • wow and wow again!!!

  • wonderful. his words conjure up SUCH pictures..! Never really heard any of his stuff before..

    :)

  • quelle belle chanson empreinte de nostalgie et cette voix aussi douce de Léonard Cohen me ravit le coeur

  • beautiful. (:

  • As a teen I played this record over and over ,haunted by the lyrics.

  • Amazing song

  • wonderful! cohen at his best

  • His voice has changed greatly, this is a very early version

  • Absolutely stunning.........!

  • That is definitely Leonard. Original version with background noise, apparently.

  • Is this actually Leonard Cohen??? Sound's to high to be him but its a brilliant version.

  • @alwayswinit4real It is Leonard Cohen.

  • @ha2009pty Yea, back when he could sort of sing. This is, in fact, the best vocal of his.

  • @alwayswinit4real when he was a lot younger ... 1969/70

  • @alwayswinit4real yep its him alright

  • @alwayswinit4real its leonard cohen...

  • @alwayswinit4real It's him . . . which explains the brilliance that you were hearing . . . great tune from a great artist

  • @alwayswinit4real

He didn't start singing with that deep voice until much later.

  • @alwayswinit4real it's pretty much his first song

  • Comment removed

  • @alwayswinit4real Yes, this is Leonard Cohen...from an album which I like much better than the live version.

  • @alwayswinit4real

yeah this is DEFINATELY leonard cohen, it sounds exactly the same as the original LP album.

    He is GREAT...

  • @alwayswinit4real

    eh, what?

  • @alwayswinit4real I believe it's his original version in his early days.

  • @alwayswinit4real this song is recorded when leonard was many years younger.

  • @alwayswinit4real That's young Leonard Cohen! It deepened across his career.

  • @alwayswinit4real

yes this is really the very young leonard cohen ,i have a lot of albums of him ,his voice is darker now because of the smoking i think .but however he is brilliant

  • Comment removed

  • @alwayswinit4real it's young Leonard Cohen

  • @alwayswinit4real It's a very old version of L.C.-the virgin one;I remember this more,than beautiful song from the times,when I was young.

  • @alwayswinit4real yeah when he was younger,,,,that's the song i heard first of him before "so long marianne" on a "Woodstock Generation Tape"... peace

  • @alwayswinit4real This IS Leonard Cohen - his original recording from 40 years ago...

  • @alwayswinit4real

Leonard Cohen had a much higher voice when he was younger. The song was recorded about 45 years ago.

  • @alwayswinit4real Yes, he is really singing this one.

  • @alwayswinit4real

i have the album, this is Leonard Cohen. It does sound a bit different but I suppose we are use to listen to his newer sounds and my copy on old vinyl, but it is his beautiful voice. Respects sukiakideni.

  • Comment removed

  • @alwayswinit4real - it's the original version. His voice got more gravelly with age and cigarettes. I had a shock when I heard him in the nineties, live at the Albert Hall in London. Still love him though. :)

  • @alwayswinit4real His voice was much higher in his younger days

  • @alwayswinit4real this is definitely leonard cohen, just early leonard

  • @alwayswinit4real You get deeper as you get older. This is the start of his career.

  • @alwayswinit4real Definitely Leonard Cohen.

  • Beautiful - makes me think of Montréal

  • Who it that one who does not like this, represent yourself man and go!

  • Pretty song <3

  • I first heard this song in version of Dianne Reeves singing it. It was love at first hearing. Although the original sounds very different, in a style I don't listen a lot, I like it very much too.

  • This brings me back to my childhood. I have fond memories of being on summer vacation, at kindergarten age, fans humming in the background as my dad plays Cohen on our stereo for hours at a time. I think everyone has a special place for songs that offer such a feeling of nostalgia!

  • now listen to planb giving the darker side to the story in - Suzanne feat Leonard Cohen.

  • @robin22391 NO. no

  • @HurrricaneDrunk yes, yes. poetry that is true to the real world rather than avoiding and hiding from it.

  • @robin22391 in that way yes i guess

i like blan b just not that song

  • u make me cry..

  • u make me cry

  • I can only way WOW! Beautiful! Thank you for sharing. Love & Light, deZengo

  • @deZengo You're welcome!.. :) It's an amazing song...

  • @ha2009pty - the fact that you've you've upper cased the H in he and his puts this song in a different perspective for me. don't know what i think just yet, but thank you for that. x

  • @gazebbs123 :))

  • Plan B Made A Version Of This Song Called Suzanne And I'm Obsessed With It ;)

    Plan B - Suzanne <3

And Its Bassed On A True Story Too :)

  • @angeleyes345 yes, great song, disgusting,but good.

  • Reminds me of my ex-wife. We first heard him sing it in a club in Chivago in 1968(?)

  • @pedonbio, Your ex-wife was a man?

  • @guitarslim56

I think he meant that they heard Cohen sing it.

  • this is the 2nd Leonard Cohen song I became obsessed with...i used to live in brooklyn, and i'd bike out by the water in greenpoint, with all the old fabric buildings they were converting into lofts, the empty streets, the trash, the latino men fishing by the dock, silently hunch over the railing, and i'd just imagine suzanne was written down underneath an old tree leaning over the water in a little sheltered incline...i'd cry then, i cry now.
