  • lol have all of them on lp.s and no deck :( you should post again with the full tracks not just clips............... \m/

  • eXcElLeNt lISt dUdE :))

  • nice work! there definitely was great music back then.

  • I'd place "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as #1; followed by #2, "New Gold Dreams", Simple Minds; #3, "How Soon is Now", The Smiths; #4, "Frost and Fire", Everything But the Girl"; #5, "Orange Crush", REM; #6, "I Will Follow", U2; #7, "Seconds", Human League; #8, "She Sells Santuary", The Cult; #9, "Save It for Later", The Beat; and #10, "Devil Doll", X.

  • ive got a 80's indie tune on my channel which i dont know the name of, can anyone help me out

  • Major credit for Happy House, my friend.

  • Well there's 6 minutes and 23 seconds I'll never get back... :/

  • I submit that the 80's were full of soul, and I felt it to my very core. As a 19 year old, in a band, in an alternative bar, on campus, "How Soon As Now," lifted me into another dimension when I was dancing my ass off! My long black coat and long "Dr. Who" scarf defined me at that moment in time. This top ten brings back a lot of those memories. Thanks!

  • love the list. Been to many concerts on this list. ♥

  • Very impressive list. VIVA SMITHS!!

  • My favorite song of the 80s is "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies.

  • Jane's Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers would be on that list.

  • Love this List.... True "Alternative" List

  • Would have added Suzanne Vega, Dead Milkman, 10,000 Maniacs but 100 songs can not be enough never mind 10. Thing is as I remember it alternative as a genre term did not become big until 89 or 90. A lot of these acts like especially synth acts like Depeche Mode were "New Wave" (different from 70s New Wave but that is another story). By the late 80s New Wave was not new so it was just music you listed to if you were “different” on non mainstream or college radio

  • What about all the punk bands like Bad Religon, the Dead Kennedys, and Black Flag? And what about AC-DC they weren't big hair and spandex they were badass.

  • This is a very good list. Three songs are in my top ten too. And of course, there must be many of us who picked the same song as the best song of the 1980's.

  • Excellent top 10 list! I weep for my lost youth and all my first impressions of life and love at that time. Sweet memories. Thank you.

  • the cure Joy division and THE SMITHS!!!

  • The Cure, The Pixies, Echo and The Bunnymen FTW

  • of course with lists, you will always have dissenting opinions. i question #4, but its no big whoop. this was an incredible list, a record of sorts of the wonderful 80s, our own realm, a different sphere from the bullshit of madonna and bruce springsteen and bon jovi, etc. yay for us, the 'odd' people who now rule this earth.

  • The Replacements, Elvis costello, Nick Kershaw,Nina Hagen,etc...

  • 'Just Like Honey'. Goosebumps running up both arms and down my back.

  • 97X, 98.7 and 93.3 were my radio stations back in the day...reminiscing now. 8)

  • I agree Frankie. Most people that know of the 80's through vh1 and MtV don't realize there was a whole world of great alternative music that is never mentioned i.e punk, ska, new wave, maud, goth, etc. 91X in the 80's was the best radio station, too. Just had to mention that.

  • I agree Frankie. Most people that know of the 80's through vh1 and MtV don't realize there was a whole world of great alternative music that is never mentioned i.e punk, ska, new wave, maud, goth, etc.

  • Pam REFUSES to let me play my 80s Post Punk in my car. "Your music is so depressing and you can't dance to it or sing it---everytime I go out with you, I feel like its Halloween---gotta pitch da bitch!!! FYI, thank Jai for You tube---I am discovered cool groups I did not know existed in da 80s The Sound, The Sounds, Pink Turns Blue, Adult Net, The Fall, The Railway Children, Comstat Angels, The Opposition, Bill Pritchard. I have a medical condition called Down(loading) Syndrome--hug me?!!!

  • I love being 14 years old and loving every single one of these bands<3

  • @alternativerockie i love not giving a shit

  • Excellent list, really excellent.

  • awesome list and with three of my favourite bands on it! :)

  • WOW! What a great list...you were obviously actually there... ha ha!

  • yup totally the smiths 1# so fuck 17 cock suckers

  • didn't Love Will Tear us Apart come out in the 70's?

  • @Rimbaud1531 It was first released in April 1990

  • 80's were the best!!!

  • pixies of course ! I like complete list though ...

  • pretty good list. but your missing R.E.M., Dinosaur Jr, sonic youth, mudhoney, husker du, and many others.

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9 duh, that's why it's his top TEN..... not 100 lol

  • e anche i Bauhaus!!! non è rock alternativo minchione.

  • da quando in qua i Joy Division hanno fatto rock alternativo?

  • Nice choices!!! :)

  • Awesome list the smiths should be number 1 but blondie i could do without

  • What! No R.E.M.? And you call yourself educated. Bah.

  • What about the Stone Roses? They finished off the 80's in style! The icing on the cake!

  • you can't get much better than joy division!

  • great top 10,i liked it

  • Want a real top 10? #10 I travel simple minds #9 Pics of you Cure #8 Lips like sugar Bunnymen #7 Stop me Smiths #6 Cant get there from here R.e.m. #5 South Central REM #4 Dont change INXS #3 Love will tear us apart Joy Division #2 People are people Depeche mode #1 Deadbeat club B52s
  • I say often that I was getting bored of the 1970's with their longhairs with guitars. And then came synths, starving British bands on the Dole, and inno-FREAKING-vation. It appealed to something I had no name for, but which I now recognize is my cold, cold silicon heart.

  • *yawn*

  • These are all the same kind of emo song, (not that that's a bad thing) except for the Pixies and Blondie...hardly representative of 80s alt-rock. Remember R.E.M., or a little band called The Ramones? Remember Red Hot Chili Peppers, or some song called "Sunday Bloody Sunday?"

  • Rather.. sad when you can name every band....just goes to show..how time doesn't stand still for anyone...

  • erm....the 80's was mainly about hairbands and that gay pop which i hate.....no one gives a crap about alternative....poison, warrant, tesla, def leopard, and motley crue.....they could take up the top 50 80's songs. so i should have permission to slap you your the uneducated bitch

  • @pippy7767 although i agree with you, thats a bit harsh lol. actually, this is the stuff that ruined the "good" rock music. in MY opinion. but, if you liked, or like, it, thats fine. to each his/her own. i do like some of it. alot of it actually. to the uploader, do you remember stephen duffy or flesh for lulu? and i love the cure, cult, etc.

  • THE SMITHS.

  • @geodice1279 why should you............

  • Watchhh us !!!!!!! Check our music !!!

    youtube.com/watch?v=i00t57hXsWs

  • a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig thumbs up on this awesome picks!

  • I don't know about "Best Songs" but those were DEFINATELY the best bands. However, I would have replaced The Pixies in favor of New Order(you had Joy Division, that's close enough) or Tones On Tail.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=sKyEtC9VXc4 CHECK OUR MUSIC !

  • ok you smelly bum sniffer you need to stop making reviews on this channel because no one cares about a screw up little man that sounds like jacksandmacks so please stick to the brick show

  • All Great Songs! But a few are NOT top 10 of the entire decade.. come on..

  • thank you for educating the masses on the power of 80's alternative. Though I am a fan of the pop music and any music from the 80's as well.

  • i did not like number 2 and number the cure pictures of you was that not in the 90s? but over all really good.

  • Yes Pictures was released in 1990... But it was On the disintegration album so it belongs on this list....

  • okay, the last couple of three were pretty good. I don't think this can be compared to today's alternative rock, however.

Today's alternative rock, in most cases, kicks some M******ing ass.

I don't belong posting on your nice video.

  • i no its only a matter of opinion and i respect yours

  • Great list, and I agree that the 80's was a good decade. Its not exactly my favorite, but it held some of the best Alt. Rock and heavy Metal releases ever.

  • So much great music came out of the post-punk era, I love that underground early postpunk/goth/alt. sound of the 80's

  • dear poster of this...I love you!

  • Yesss...when it came to number two and it was Blondie, I thought "There is no Smiths". Good list. :)

  • Echo & The Bunnymen at #5, a little low for them. But overall a good list

  • joy division top 5 atleast. my opinion of course

  • What a great list this is!

  • the only music i like of the eighties is the alternative rock stuff. it rocks.

  • mmm it seems more like a post punk top ten, post punk and alternative are not the same music style, the Cure more or less, The Smiths andThe Pixies obviously is alternative, but Joy Division?? I Don't think so ¬¬ Joy Division it's more like post punk/gothic.... take care :)

  • and Joy Divison

  • thumb's up for The Smith's

  • @cormacg123 omg they are my life!!!

  • You put the smiths as number one its my favorite list now. haha.

  • Great list, but I wouldn't put blondie in there, instead nick cave or love and rockets, sisters of mercy instead.

  • I KNEW IT! I FUCKING KNEW IT!! I SAID IN MY MIND "IF THIS LIST DOESN'T INCLUDE A CLASSIC BY THE SMITHS OR THE #1 SPOT WENT TO BULLSHIT ASS OVERRATED FLOCK OF SEAGULLS I'M GOING TO SLIT YER CLIT" BUT I SHOULD'VE KNOWN! THE SMITHS ARE THE GREATEST ALTERNATIVE ROCK BAND OF ALL LIFE.

  • nice list!!!!

  • Im looking for a song!!!! i hear it all the time

In the chorus it has a sick guitar riff then the singer shouts something then he goes back to sing it?

Does anybody have an idea of what it is thanks :)

  • The Replacements?

  • Love this list ,brings back some awesome memories, not sure about blondie though and where is B52's planet claire.

  • Comment removed

  • I would like to add. The Band "THE CALL" my favorite song from them is called "Even Now" a very cool song.... check it out....

  • The Cult were an awesome band, and are still rocking today.....my favorites were The Cure, The Cult, Siouie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Blondie, The Call (An Awesome Band Look Them Up), R.E.M, A Flock Of Seagulls, The B-52's, many others... I know I left a whole lot of great bands out..... can anyone add to the list...

  • YES. i mean i know this doesn't have ALL the best but you totally picked some great essentials.

  • Brilliant

  • YES! the smiths, the cure, echo and the bunnymen : ) YAY!!!

  • Yeh! to levraildb, and wheres Sisters of Mercy?

  • esto no es rock alternativo invecil alternativo es MUSE!! A WEBBO LOS MEJORES

  • @brianstop123 Poor brian, Did you notice that the video is called 80's alternative?

Muse is inspired by all this bands ont this video...

    Poor baby tsc tsc

  • @camilabibila so what stupid?

You are the stupid here kid.

  • Where are Sisters of Mercy, or Violent Femmes, or any of dozens of other trailblazers? How Soon is Now def belongs on this list though, so kudos for that!

  • LOVE every one of those songs, but my list would be different.

  • how soon is now =Best song ever

  • Which version of Love Will Tear Us apart was that? I Have 3 versions and that wasen't one of them.

  • the Pixies is my fave, all good choices tho!

  • omg...I LOVE you!!! Thanks :)

  • im sorry but i REALLY fucking hate love will tear us apart i remeber the first time i hear it like yesterday it was on 120 minutes

  • where is my mind no.1

  • hell yea....the cure the smiths and depeche mode is all i need

  • Very Well Done.... There were so many.... But "how soon is now" is first rate... How about Vicious Pink 8:15 to nowhere, Ministry Over the shoulder, or even Grace Jones Slave to the rhythm... so many classics

My Jaws Hurt just thinking about it....

  • 5 stars for Siouxsie

  • This was grand, thank you!

  • Thanks for posting this vid. I lived in the '80's, and I listened to all of the underground 80's alternative, et. al., and appreciate being reminded of which tunes I need to be reminded of!

  • perfect except fuck blondie. blondie ==overrated and terrible live! so glad you added echo though!

  • The Replacement! come on. they had some amazing songs

  • 6 & 7 are nice selections for this list.

  • Nice list especially # 10 & # 5, where was The Cult????

  • Meh, a bit commercial.

  • Pixies is the only song up to any other decades top ten.

  • Nice compellation! Thanks! Takes me back to when these were relatively new heh

  • hm i am lonely goth girl looking for some company

  • i would've snuck in the cult -pheonix somewhere in that list

better selection for pixies - monkey gone to heaven, the cure- in between days, killing joke-love like blood

  • This is more like the 80's music I remember!!!!!!!

  • should of done a top twenty.

  • if anyone knows that song that starts off with RISE N SHINE UP AND AT EM PLEASE LET ME KNOW THX

  • You're probably thinking of Kon Kan's I Beg Your Pardon ( I Never Promised You A Rose Garden)

  • Sorry..to nunavutdancer.

  • i like all the list,,there are more songs like rem: fall on me, soft cell: what, friends again: state of art, cocteau twins: blue bell knoll, psychedelic furs: ghost in you, china crisis: wishful thinking, abc: all of my heart, roxy music : avalon, new order: blue monday, the b-52's: devil in my car, xtc: working overtime, the the: uncertain smile, romeovoid: never say never, wall of voodoo, squeeze: annie get you gun, talk talk: it's my life etc etc,,,but it's ok ,only ten could be on the list

  • Believe me or not... when I listen to your music choices I allready knew what #1 would be....GREAT... but why Joy Division on #10?

  • i'm 15 and this is awesomely great.kinda hope to see radio free europe by r.e.m. or blue monday by new order but pixies, the cure and the smiths are one of my favorites.

  • Great selections!

  • Great humor in you comments!

    Good choices!

I miss The Church in the list.

  • Never did I know that Mindless Self Indulgence's, "Bitches," was a cover until I heard song #8 on this listing. You win for showing me this!!!!

  • ....i hope those are lyrics

  • The Smith's song was used as inspiration for Charmed! So cool!

  • By the way, they sounded British.

  • You look like you know your music from the 80's. I have been trying to find this song for about a year now. I first heard it on FUSE once or VH1 2. I only have one bit of lyrics from it, "I ain't got time to want to feel." OR, "I ain't got time to wait for you." Could you please help me? Thank you so much.

  • Google doesn't help? Just put in the phrase 'I ain't got time to' and the word 'lyrics' and '80's' beside it. That might be a start.

  • I was a metalhead for most of the 80's, until I got into dance music, and heard the Cure and Depeche Mode in the clubs. I have no idea what 'How Soon is Now' is about, and don't care. All I know is when I hear it, I instinctively lift up my right leg, spread out my arms, and pivot around like an aeroplane.:). One of the most unique, and unforgettable tunes of all time.

  • Great top ten, and agree with #1... Blondie start it all... so I agree... It's hard to do these and no one is ever going to agree but you did a great job and awesome creativity.

  • cool music im going to make a playlist out of this except for blondie i dont think it goes with this

  • dam i like #1 but i think that shitty series charmed ruined it for me :(

  • Have LP's from all the bands but Pixie,Joy Divison.

Blondie was years ahead of everyone in the 80's

Siouxsie spear headed Goth and still rocks after all these

years along side Deborah Harry Love all the rest just as much

as it brings back my sub culture life as a child of the 80's

  • 70's - 90's were the best but the 80's was especially the best

  • Great list! It could have been any Smith's song for me at number 1 (except for Golden Lights).

  • Good list. I totally agree with How Soon Is Now at #1. I'd move up Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart to the top three and also Echo's Killing Moon to the top three. I'd throw out the Siouxsie song completely -- never liked them much.

    Ahh, the 80s.

  • woooooooooooo smiths r the best!!!! but i do love all the other amazing songs in this video...all together 80s r the best

  • Where are The Cramps, Nick Cave, The Gun Club ?

  • perfect selection

  • the pixies no. 1

  • this is the dark side of the 80´s but better as the commercial shit @ this time by the way Blondie Alternative ??? lol the text of this song is absolutly donkshit

  • "Just like honey" might only be the 7th greatest song from the eighties, but it definitly is the greatest song of all time! :P

  • I'm there for everything except Blondie.

  • FUCK YEAH THE CURE <33333333

  • This is the best list of alternative songs on youtube.

  • (description) i asked my friend for real if he thought the 80's was a horrible decade in music ( i actually slapped him) LOL

  • I think you love Donnie Darko movie too

  • I guess I am a little upset for being out of work so I need to vent! I was thinking that how about the "Most Non-Masculine" 80's bands?? I guess I might be starting something So for our less than "masculine" crowd, you have this list as follows :

10- Roxy Music 9- Love and Rockets 8- Wham 7- Psychedelic Furs 6- Depeche Mode 5- Culture Club 4- Frankie Goes to Hollywood 3- The Cure 2- Pet Shop Boys 1- JUDAS PRIEST!!!!!!!!

  • where the fuck is REM?

  • Not in the alternative class with these....almost nothig from the US was.

  • You're a fucking idiot. The Smiths sound very, very much like REM besides the song in this video.

  • Personal opinion, I disagree, deal with it.

  • It's my opinion that you like to scarf yourself with freaking candles everynight before you go to bed. You melt the candles and pour the melted wax into a cup and drink it. then you pee out the melted wax into your dinner for you to eat. Pa-thetic

  • no...no they dont

  • No offense but REM did not make alternative music popular, not in the UK. Alternative music in the UK has always been popular since even before 1977, troubling the mainstream pretty successfully. We didn't go from REO Speedwagon to REM in 1986 or something, most of these songs pre-date that time and were big songs over here.

  • "Alternative music in the UK has always been popular since even before 1977"

    You are an idiot.

  • I mean music that's alternative to the mainstream dickhead, not just what what was called 'alternative' in the 80's.,. You got that?

  • You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. kill yourself.

  • Yayyee when ever i put on a eighties song my mom is just like omg i like that song.. and she'd admit that she used to hate it when it came out.

  • Bravo ! Smiths at #1.

  • if I only knew then....
