i'm not an expert on caddy mills but i've heard laics mention the "501" cadillac engines only to be berated by cadillac experts for being jerks because there's no such thing as a "501" engine...apparently the 472 mills came with a factory sticker that had a '501' number on it but it was an emissions code or something, on it in a smaller script was also a displacement given - 472 ci..the same family as the 472 - the 500 ci mill - was in eldorados from '70-up and used in deville from '75 or '76...
JUST AS AN INFORMATION, CADILLAC NEVER MOUNTED A 390 ON ANY ELDORADO IN 1973, THE 501 CID WERE THE ONLY ENGINES MOUNTED. ABOUT THE SPACE BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND THE FIREWALL IT IS DUE TO BE A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CAR. ANYWAY LOOK ON INTERNET FOR PICTURES ABOUT THE 1973 501 CID ENGINE ON ELDORADOS AND YOU'LL BE ABLE TO SEE THAT IT MATCHES WITH MINE.
@YANKEESEC just to add to my previous post here, the later 500 ci engine is actually 499.5 ci so it couldn't be called '501'...i think you're confusing the '472/500' series of caddy engines with an emissions factory '501' sticker that many came with but as far as i know there never was a '501' cadillac engine...it's either a 472ci or the later 500 ci....and the previous engines were the 390ci/429ci in '60s cadillacs - 429s were just stroked 390s - until '68 when the 472 was first used...
@biggdaddy2001 Your forgetting the fact that those hood were like 6-7 feet long. plenty of room, and hell all that space is good b/c those engines like to blow off their oil sending unit which is on the back of the engine above the trans. try getting to that when you cram it up against a firewall.
I have a 1969 472 caddy motor in a 82 Malibu station wagon. Its modded a little but gets over 12 mpg average. That's when I drive like a old man. Driving and having fun...it gets a lot worse.

@biggdaddy2001 WTF!! Dude all 71-76 Eldorados had the 500, it was standard!!! Sad thing is as each year passed it got weaker.

That sounds more like city driving. I've heard these engines will average up to 12 MPG on the highway.
