@PaddleFiddle Looks like it's Jimmy Owens on flugelhorn. For all the info on this recording do a Google search for: Mingus live at Monterey jazz festival don't let it happen here. The second link (after this video) takes you to a page with personnel and other info.
I'm so glad someone posted this. THIS song got me into Jazz (in my angsty grunge days). This song really hit me in the heart. This is what music is about!
@Poochinnie Generally Mingus had two saxophones and one trumpet in his sextets over the years so perhaps it just seems he prioritizes sax solos, when saxes just outnumbered the trumpeter. As an aside, it would be difficult to under-prioritize the likes of Charles McPherson and Eric Dolphy. You might as well say he gave short shrift to trombonists over the years, despite the long-time presence of the likes of Frank Lacey and Jimmy Knepper (who had a great record title: "Cunningbird").
Then one day they came and they took me.
And I could say nothing because I was guilty as they were,
For not speaking out and saying that all men have a right to freedom.

At 2:09, who is the trumpet player that plays the solo through the rest of the song?

Nice. This is a good song. I like the way Mingus did the intro with the vocals. People should follow that saying.

Its very rare that mingus allows the trumpet player to play a so extensive solo...he alwas priorizes th sax solos
Poochinnie 2 years ago 3
@Poochinnie It must be Clarence Shaw, if so, that would explain it
