  • Then one day they came and they took me.

And I could say nothing because I was guilty as they were,

For not speaking out and saying that all men have a right to freedom.

  • At 2:09, who is the trumpet player that plays the solo through the rest of the song?

  • @PaddleFiddle Looks like it's Jimmy Owens on flugelhorn. For all the info on this recording do a Google search for: Mingus live at Monterey jazz festival don't let it happen here. The second link (after this video) takes you to a page with personnel and other info.

  • can please someone write what he says in the beggining of the song? i just understand a few words (sorry for my english :p) thanks

  • @lagotaenelojo87

one day the came and the took the communists and I said nothing because I was not a communist

then one day they came and they took the people of the Jewish faith and I said nothing because I had no faith

then one day they came and they took the unionists and I said nothing because I was not a unionist

they burned the Catholic church one day and I said nothing because I was a protestant

  • @ronenman thank you man, but you missed the last line jajajjaj ;)

  • Wasn't that the beginning melody of The Rite of Spring at the start?

  • Nice. This is a good song. I like the way Mingus did the intro with the vocals. People should follow that saying.

  • Brilliant and more meaningful now than ever!

  • one day they took everyman away because he disagreed with the President. then there was no one left.

  • One day they called to shut down a mosque, and I said nothing because I wasn't a Muslim....

  • @TheUnknownTribe If I could vote "thumbs up" a dozen times to this comment, I would.

  • @TheUnknownTribe good choice :)

  • this is America

  • wow simple and powerful words. great music.

  • yep .....RIP Mingus

  • I'm so glad someone posted this. THIS song got me into Jazz (in my angsty grunge days). This song really hit me in the heart. This is what music is about!

  • Its very rare that mingus allows the trumpet player to play a so extensive solo...he alwas priorizes th sax solos

  • @Poochinnie It must be Clarence Shaw, if so, that would explain it

  • @Poochinnie Generally Mingus had two saxophones and one trumpet in his sextets over the years so perhaps it just seems he prioritizes sax solos, when saxes just outnumbered the trumpeter. As an aside, it would be difficult to under-prioritize the likes of Charles McPherson and Eric Dolphy. You might as well say he gave short shrift to trombonists over the years, despite the long-time presence of the likes of Frank Lacey and Jimmy Knepper (who had a great record title: "Cunningbird").

  • damn good music

  • Mingus would have to be one of the greatest musical genius' in the history of western music. Its incredible how powerful his music is.
