This game transformed my childhood from simple childishness to adventure supreme! The ability to interact and have my words reacted to by a computer game was the beginning of the end for me - after this I was no longer satisfied with being a spectator (TV, books, movies) I wanted to be involved (games).
Having no access to internet, cheats or adult help the moment that I realised "insert cartridge into slot" rather than put/shove/stick/slot etc was a changing moment in my early life.
@danthman114 I adored Sierra games. Unfortunately after the Amstrad and Amiga route my family chose Mac. (We didn't have consoles 'til I was an adult) so I never played further than KQ 3 SQ 3, LLS 2, Gold rush. But those games stand out in my memory so much that I cannot bear to throw out the boxes that the games came in! I loved the naughtiness (ability to swear and have the game react was hilarious as a child). They really extended my vocab too. So learning did happen whilst having fun!
I remember being about 8 or 9 when i first played this all the way through, was awsome, for the life of me though when I checked it out now i dont have any idea what to do or where to go, how on earth did I figure it out when i was a kid ill never know...
Wow. Such memories. I remember when I was a wee lad, I used to play this game. The ominous "You think you hear footsteps" text at the bottom used to *scare* the crap outta me. I still have nightmares about it to this day. I'm always seeing ghostly text pop up out of nowhere alerting me about footsteps, and the Sariens will shoot me if I don't hide, I tell my Doc. Then my Doc says, I need to adjust your medication. You're hallucinating floating text again, aren't you, he says.
This totally blew my mind when I first played it. I was a die hard text-adventurer at the time but was won over by the cartoon graphics and humour. To me it still looks great fun to play... I wonder what the kids of today would make of it?
wow. i'm 20 and i was so young when i played this i didnt know how to spell yet lol. and i had to get my mom to help me with this. brings back so many memories.
took me a month just to figure out how to get off the Arcadia.. But as smart as this guy is.. I still know a bunch of short cuts in playing and typing the commands that he didn't do. I think I was around 9 when I first played this. It's sooo charming to remember.
@Wyrmshadow hey. im trying to find another game similar to this. except you were in a castle and you were a servant to a wizard. if you know can you help me out?
The introduction was hilarious, especially on how they introduce Roger as a janitor. I mean what is the most least likely hero in all of Sci-Fi? A janitor! Pure comedic genius.
Type: "Opne door" - Response: "I'm sorry but you may want to OPNE the door but I certainly wont" \\ Type: "Open dooor" - Response: "I don't know what a dooor is but there certainly are none around here" \\ Type: "Open the f#cking door!" - Response: "You need a card key" \\ Dammit!
Space Quest WAS made into a movie. The concept was worked and rehashed and released under the title "Galaxy Quest" and starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman.
I know, it's a disappointment to Space Quest fans how much they dismembered the original plot, but they did seem to keep alot of the Space Quest smack, especially when they went to that planet and found those cute little monsters that were really viscious underneath their cute facade.
Galaxy Quest was never supposed to be a Space Quest film. Galaxy Quest was always planned to be (and is) a detailed spoof of what it takes to create Star Trek.
The reason there can be any parallels drawn between Space Quest and Galaxy Quest is BOTH of them are parodying common cliches in science fiction. Think about how many tv shows and movies from the 60's have desert fights.
And the cute creatures from Space Quest ("Pinkunz") were a mix of Star Trek Tribbles and Star Wars Ewoks.
It gives me a nostalgic feeling watching this; I'm from 1981, I distinctly remember being amazed by how these games looked, and nowadays when I look at it I think to myself: how could I have ever appreciated these crap graphics? :P Still, respect to the Two guys from Andromeda.
the kind of game that isnt full of action, but that just adds to the excitment when somethin does come...i remember if you seen an enemy you die...???right??
i cant wait to show my brothers this vid...i almost forgot about spacequest....i was young (born 1983) and it used to scare me while watching my brothers play..lol
And if you run windows XP, Vista, or windows 7? (Or linux or mac) Dosbox is meant to help those with no access to dos. By the way, is this abandon ware?
i totally remember this game. the first 5 minutes of this video represented 2 months of frustration. I cant tell you how many times I kicked the bucket in this game. "you hear a noise"...aaaarrrggh
I ask people all the time If they played these games as a kid. 9/10 people don't know what the f*ck I'm talking about. what a shame. These games where so cool. Me and my dad used to rock these sierra games when it was 256 EGA hahah. =] awesome.
Yeah, i had it back in the day too in amazing 4 color CGA. My other favs back then were California Games, Winter Games, King's Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry.
I'm amazed by how hard this game is; it's a wonder anyone makes it all the way through. (Personally, I never managed to get off the ship at the beginning.)
