@Chris24hrbail actually those particules look like air bubbles from a powerhead. My powerhead does the same thing. You can see how the current pushes the fish around.
really nice, my neons never school though because i have them in a ten gallon most likley, and mine are pigs when it comes to food, and when i say pigs i mean they look like they have tumors in their belly!! AND I DONT EVEN FEED THEM THAT MUCH. haha :)
I just got 6 yesterday! I put them in my 10 gallon tank with my Betta & snail. They all seem to get along so far! Crossing my fingers....I just love them! So pretty! The way they zip around is very cool too!
@wafflepoke25 so far so good. They actually swim together...my betta seems to like them and the neons don't swim away ...no harassment from either side ...I'm keeping my eyes on them though.
@VigonSaze sorry, I accidentaly disliked your comment, ok, bettas are from slow moving water, and the fish wouldn't really like the fast-swimming, water-churning tetras :)
Can someone please help me I'm gonna get fish in my tank for the first time I'm a begginer and I'm trying to decide if I should get zebra danios or neon tetras I know nothing about fish how much neon tetras and zebra banios can I fit in a 10 gallon tank? thanks
@poopingpenguin1 5 of either one would be pretty safe i think. Zebra danios are hardier fish than the neon tetras so probably go those. from what i read, neon tetras are rather sensitive to water quality and ph compared to the zebra danios.
That's all you have in your tank? I have a 10g with 9 neons and it kinda looks empty lol. I tried having a betta in there (way back when) but either the betta would die or I would find a neon dead so I don't know if it was the water (not quite ready for fish yet) or the fish (too scared to try again because I've had these 9 neons for like 3 months now and don't want them to die).
HOW DO U EVEN FEED NEON TETRAS? every time i put fish food in it just stays at the surfacce and my tetras just sit there and die off one by one. I read online that sinking the flakes would help, but my tetras still won't eat! Now there's only 1 left. ORIGINAL ITEMS: 4 neon tetras in a 3 gallon tank. <----- I think the problem is that the tank is too small, or that the tetras are eating, it's just that I can't see it.
I have had my tank for two weeks now and I want to get some neon tetra for it. Is two weeks long enough for the tank to filter its self before i put fish in??
hi everyone! i'd appreciate if you could check out my tank video. You can comment to tell me what you think, post links to your tank videos, or comment any questions you have about fish so i can answer them for you!
I had 2 goldfish in a tropical tank they changed colour slightly and went like a musty brown they got real big and looked very healthy they lived well in the warm water for over 3 years until I sold the tank with fish.
@Shadow4909 Freshwater = tropical water it's essentially the same thing compared to saying brackish vs. marine for saltwater tanks. The reason they died was because either you didn't acclimate them properly(tank shock), your tank wasn't cycled (NH3, NO2/3), you dumped them in unconditioned water (tap parameters differ from region to region yours might have high chloramines or high heavy metal content), etc. Neon/green neon/cardinal tetras are pretty sensitive, more than people think.
Beautiful and healthy but reason they are under nice rock ledge is for security. As another person suggested some great floating plants over the rock will allow them to feel secure and come out to play! Remember fish think they are about to be some one elses lunch! (instinctively think that is) Beautiful and healthy fish though.
i want to say something. Tetras like defused lights instead of a shiny led light shining on them so put some plants on the top of the water so it kinda makes it look defuesed --mike
@samjl4 If you can keep marine (alive well and proper that is, lol) then you can keep tropical. Just do some real research in each bio type of fish, and see what their native environment is and try as best you can to duplicate (doesn't have to be a real biotype but ie heavily planted if from that sort of river system so on). Chiclids rocks, sand so on. And the larger the system the better.. Schooling fish need huge ranges to roam - longer tanks are best...
Do your tetras lose there red color when you turn the lights off? Mine do cause when i turn my aquarium on i notice they are dull in ther red Color but then they get it back a few hrs later
YES!! That totally happens to mine too. Then you can watch and their original luster will appear again. They become more neon and colorful with more exposure to light. It is easy to see how in muddy tropical rivers this could be useful.... thanks for your comment, happy fish keeping! --JL
@jesselehmann Their colours are much more dull when they are resting...so I guess over night with the lights off, then when the light is switched back on they 'wake up' if that makes any sense? x
@jesselehmann You are right in black water (some so dark can't see but a few inches) it is a signal to others. (but other tributaries clear) From my fish book on color.
......................
"The fish changes the brightness of its colors according to the time of the day. At night, the colors are usually dimmer. Stress and illness and hunger will also affect the colors."
@jesselehmann when that first happened to me a couple years ago, i freaked out and thought they were dead! they were just sitting there, colorless and not moving. their colors come back quick actually, less than 5 mins after they wake up. love your school though, they're very good looking fish =]
@jesselehmann =] that happened to me too a few yrs ago when i first got them. i thought they were dead and freaked out!!! hahaha, less than 15-20 mins later they were themselves again.
scvs2 u dont need an air pump they live fine in a tank aslong as the water service is aerated with the filter even so u reali dont need all the bubbles ive only got it on my tank as u will see in my videos coz the water from my filter is below the water surface
can i put like 5 glofish n like 10 tetras and wold they still school. my tank is 29 gallon n im planning on adding 2 guppies, 2 mickey mouse fish,3 dwarf sunset platies.... n its gonna be heavily planted. with flurite black gravel. n a black backround.
That sound AWESOME! Please remember: Gold Fish are COLD WATER fish adn the rest you describe are all warm water tropical fish. Your GOldfish will not do well in heated water....
Unfortunately you need an air pump for them to live. In an oxygen deprived environment, I have seen them rise to the surface for air, but that was a temporary problem. Without an air pump they will surely live in very very poor health and eventually die.. sorry.. but you can get an air pump really cheap. I even have an extra one I would give you lived near by...
You also need filtration. Either under-gravel or external. I HIGHLY recommend that if you really want to get into the hobby, start browsing craiglist in your area. I got a $450 Acrylic tank on craigslist for $40. People who want to get rid of their tanks will sell you the whole shebang, everything you need, for like $30 if you keep looking! good luck.
@jesselehmann Ah, i was wondering if i don't use a filtration system will they die? My condo is too small for a fish tank or i would have loved to get a huge one
Yes. Yo uMUST have a heater, a filter, and an air pump. You can use an air pump to create an undergravel filter which will areate and filter for you, and if you dont have your water at 75 to 82 degrees your fish will die. You can have all of this in a 10 gallon tank no problem though...
@jesselehmann ah i had 10 gold fishes in my 5 gallon tank with no air tank or filter only plastic rocks on the bottom . 5 died within the first week then the rest are still here today been 3 years ;)
Oh Please do note: Your Goldfish are cold water and Tetra are freshwatertropical. They cannot survive in the same environments.. if you put tetra into a cold tank that is good for gold fish, they will die, and if you raise your tempt enough for the tetra to live, you goldfish will die... sorry to be the bearer of rough news...but they are little lives after all...
@jesselehmann I had goldfish in tropical water with tropical fish for years......and they did better than when they where in cold water!! I set the temp of the water a degree a week until accustom! they grew huge and became the dominant fish puttin the tropical in their place but in a nice way without bullying! My daughter has goldfish and is now doing the same to make them tropical...
@BezwaldoLFC Just because you force a fish against it's nature does not mean it is thriving. Organs become malformed and other issues but that does not mean it can't be done as most fish are so commercially bred now a days. "putting the tropicals in their place" can you hear yourself! (degree in ocean/pre vet science and 45 years of breeding fish)... of course they grew huge that is their real size according to the breed! (without bullying! These are fish not people) Both are suffering.
@sherryazure Well if your so clever with your (degree in ocean/pre vet science and 45 years of breeding fish) which I don't think many youtubers have, then don't you think it would be better to offer advice without the attitude! Most of the people on youtube come on looking for advice not to get shouted at cause someone hasn't had more experience than you! Just listen to yourself!!! Use your Degree and offer advice in the right way without insulting people......we all have to start somewhere...
@jesselehmann ... I have 4 goldfish in my tank for 2 years now ... water temp is avg 25degreesC ... goes upto 30 degrees in summer ... they are doing fine ... my tank also has guppies, red cherry shrimps, black ghost.
a highly efficient bio filteration system is essential though
@jesselehmann I have 2 fantail small goldfish and with 4 big tetras and 8 small phantom ones, They doesn't die!! They has live together since a around 2 months
I had 4 goldfish from the begin, 2 died of dieaese:((
You don't deserve to own fish. You should have researched what your goldfish need before you went out and bought them. Goldfish need a LARGE tank! No questions. They simply won't be any good in a 5 gallon, 10 gallon or even 30 gallon tank! They need a minimum of 40 gallons if they're fancy goldfish or a minimum of 100 if they're common/feeder fish. This is only for 2. For 5 you'd need much more than that!
@scvs2 If dogs or cats were 1 cent each/buy one get one free would you subject them to the same punishment? What about children? Fish are animals just like any other. Why even have them if you're going to treat them like that? It's sick.
@DESERVANT sure if you much ratter they be tossed into the ocean when they would die in fives minutes... So is it better to save a life even though it sucks or get killed in salty water?
@scvs2 What makes you think they'd be tossed into the ocean? What a silly thing to suggest. Nobody would buy goldfish just to throw them into the ocean! If anything, they'd be put into a lake or pond.
@DESERVANT I was there at the harbor they were having a event where if you catch a gold fish in your mouth you get free movie tickets. I was about to leave when i saw them started tossing one fish at a time into the inlet leading to the ocean so i offer to it it off their hands...
@scvs2 That is the most vile thing I've ever seen. What dumbasses. I'm ashamed to say I live in the same city. You're a good person to save them. Though, I still don't support how you're taking care of them. There are plenty of people around who could/can take them in. You can give them to anyone with a pond or large aquarium. You can give them back to a pet store! Keeping them in a bowl will stunt their growth and in turn give them a shorter life.
@DESERVANT Very true. Before I was actually experienced with keeping fish, I kept 3 comet/common goldfish in a 3 gallon, and added a pearlscale and put them in a 6 gallon. I can't live with myself knowing that's the pain and suffering I inflicted on my fish. Now, I'll keep my tropical fish and wait for a pond to get goldfish (I got bigger tanks, but the biggest one is 15 gallons, so no goldfish for me).
@scvs2 Please don't torture any more fish until you do some homework. Like us dying for them is as painful (research shows super sensitive nerves!) The reason they died is obvious. I hope you improved their environment so they are not just there and surviving, but thriving and enjoying their lives. Gold fish need at least a 20 per fish (due to their unique digestive tracks) ugh I hate reading about people like you. (sorry to many rescues and see tortured end results) SAD
There is a general rule of one-inch for every gallon of h20. I would stick to that rule as best you can. However if you are very well filtered, and use live plants, I would have no problem adding 18-20 if they are the only fish in there... thanks for the question, I always welcom more. --Jesse
@imgunfreak I got 10 and 7 died x(, I'm so mad, but luckily the petstore paid me back... I have three left though, hopefully they are the strong ones, but if they live then I will definately get more =)
if u get them from a fish store and ot just petco or petsmart then they should do ok unless they are diseased or ure tank is not good for them check out how they like their homes mine are:temp 78 ph around 6.5 soft water works well
My filtration system filters 1000 gallons per hour through an exteral sump, then through four separate carbon filters.... the debis of which you speak is freez dried shrimp and bubbles.... thanks though
Lol. I know they do huh! Well there is a limited selection so... if we could upload our own music that would be sweet, but we have to choose from what they have... Thanks for your comment though, and happy...aquariuming?
go to a friends house or someone you know with a cycled tank, get their filter media or sponge and squeeze it into a cup, it should be brown dirty water, throw that into your tank and it should be cycled ASAP, just test the water to be safe
also if that someone can just give you their sponge or filter media itll help
Nice tank, Jesse. The Neons are beautiful. I've had a high mortality rate with mine. They just disappear. I'm sure the scavengers are to blame. I don't believe they kill & eat them, though. They just clean up the mess, doing what nature designed them to do. My water isn't the problem either. I blame the local fish store and their poor upkeep of the fish they sell. I wish you the best with these guys. Have a great day.
Well thank you very much for your comment, it is much appreciated. I would very much like to help you decrease the mortality rate amongst your Tetra. Perhaps you could tell me what other fish you have? What are the 'scavengers" you refer to? If they are just disappearing there could only be very few options: You have a big killer in there like and Angelfish, Cichlid, Many species of cats, Oscar, Gourami, and even some more unlikely culprits like a Balloon Molly or a Red finned or Bala shark.cont
Thanks for your reply. You can see the fish I have in my video called "Aquarium: Tropical Fish & African Cichlids". The Tropicals & Africans are in 2 separate tanks. In my 55 gallon I have about 12 Ghost Shrimp, 1 Gold Loach (algae eater/ not seen in video), 2 Neon Tetras, 5 Glow-Lite Tetras, 7 Harlequin Rasboras, 1 Cory Catfish, 1 Emerald Green Catfish, 4 Black Kuhli Loaches, & 1 Starfire Red Glowfish.
Usually smaller unsuspecting predators will injure a Tetra then pick it off later, but you say yours are disappearing our right... Ok so if not a predator then its not your water cuz you said that it was fine, and that would leave a corpse. So they are either jumping out of your tank and dying then being eaten by your cat or dog before you see them, I HAVE HAD Tetra jump out and an animal will eat them, or they are being sucked into your External filter and slowly digested by bacterium cont'd
I have had about 4 fish jump out of the tank. I found those. I've recenyly put a lid on the tank. I have no 4 legged pets. There are no fish corpses. The filters are not sucking them up. I did find about 3 fish that perished overnight that were stuck to the intake. The rest just disappear. They're there when I retire, but gone when I awaken. Many people on the net have this problem with Neons, but they have unsuspecting predators. Do you suspect my Gold Loach (Ra). He's the largest in the tank.
I want to buy tetras but can all different kind of tetras live well together or do you have to have one specific kind living together?

@jesselehmann ah i had 10 gold fishes in my 5 gallon tank with no air tank or filter only plastic rocks on the bottom . 5 died within the first week then the rest are still here today been 3 years ;)
scvs2 2 years ago
Oh Please do note: Your Goldfish are cold water and Tetra are freshwatertropical. They cannot survive in the same environments.. if you put tetra into a cold tank that is good for gold fish, they will die, and if you raise your tempt enough for the tetra to live, you goldfish will die... sorry to be the bearer of rough news...but they are little lives after all...
jesselehmann 2 years ago
@jesselehmann I had goldfish in tropical water with tropical fish for years......and they did better than when they where in cold water!! I set the temp of the water a degree a week until accustom! they grew huge and became the dominant fish puttin the tropical in their place but in a nice way without bullying! My daughter has goldfish and is now doing the same to make them tropical...
BezwaldoLFC 1 year ago
@BezwaldoLFC Just because you force a fish against it's nature does not mean it is thriving. Organs become malformed and other issues but that does not mean it can't be done as most fish are so commercially bred now a days. "putting the tropicals in their place" can you hear yourself! (degree in ocean/pre vet science and 45 years of breeding fish)... of course they grew huge that is their real size according to the breed! (without bullying! These are fish not people) Both are suffering.
sherryazure 1 year ago
@sherryazure Well if your so clever with your (degree in ocean/pre vet science and 45 years of breeding fish) which I don't think many youtubers have, then don't you think it would be better to offer advice without the attitude! Most of the people on youtube come on looking for advice not to get shouted at cause someone hasn't had more experience than you! Just listen to yourself!!! Use your Degree and offer advice in the right way without insulting people......we all have to start somewhere...

@jesselehmann Goldfish are more energetic in warm water actually they don't die...

You don't deserve to own fish. You should have researched what your goldfish need before you went out and bought them. Goldfish need a LARGE tank! No questions. They simply won't be any good in a 5 gallon, 10 gallon or even 30 gallon tank! They need a minimum of 40 gallons if they're fancy goldfish or a minimum of 100 if they're common/feeder fish. This is only for 2. For 5 you'd need much more than that!
DESERVANT 1 year ago
@DESERVANT sure... they were 1 cent each and if you buy one you get 1 free so might as well or else it would have gone down the toilet
scvs2 1 year ago
@scvs2 If dogs or cats were 1 cent each/buy one get one free would you subject them to the same punishment? What about children? Fish are animals just like any other. Why even have them if you're going to treat them like that? It's sick.
DESERVANT 1 year ago
@DESERVANT sure if you much ratter they be tossed into the ocean when they would die in fives minutes... So is it better to save a life even though it sucks or get killed in salty water?
scvs2 1 year ago
@scvs2 What makes you think they'd be tossed into the ocean? What a silly thing to suggest. Nobody would buy goldfish just to throw them into the ocean! If anything, they'd be put into a lake or pond.
DESERVANT 1 year ago

DESERVANT 1 year ago
@DESERVANT alright hope your happy i went and free all the golf fishes into trout lake.
scvs2 1 year ago
@DESERVANT Very true. Before I was actually experienced with keeping fish, I kept 3 comet/common goldfish in a 3 gallon, and added a pearlscale and put them in a 6 gallon. I can't live with myself knowing that's the pain and suffering I inflicted on my fish. Now, I'll keep my tropical fish and wait for a pond to get goldfish (I got bigger tanks, but the biggest one is 15 gallons, so no goldfish for me).
Animal2Fish0 1 year ago
@scvs2 Please don't torture any more fish until you do some homework. Like us dying for them is as painful (research shows super sensitive nerves!) The reason they died is obvious. I hope you improved their environment so they are not just there and surviving, but thriving and enjoying their lives. Gold fish need at least a 20 per fish (due to their unique digestive tracks) ugh I hate reading about people like you. (sorry to many rescues and see tortured end results) SAD

How many neon tetras can you keep in a 20 gallon long aquarium?
TheZaky9 2 years ago
There is a general rule of one-inch for every gallon of h20. I would stick to that rule as best you can. However if you are very well filtered, and use live plants, I would have no problem adding 18-20 if they are the only fish in there... thanks for the question, I always welcom more. --Jesse

wow cool. i have some of those but not cool blue like that!

Thanks for your kind words!! If you have some tetra, try feeding them frozen blood worms. It REALLY helps to bring out their natural colors! --Jesse

My filtration system filters 1000 gallons per hour through an exteral sump, then through four separate carbon filters.... the debis of which you speak is freez dried shrimp and bubbles.... thanks though

why do they always stick together? its weird... my grandma has neons and i never see them apart!!!!

they are schooling fish :)
love family and friends XD
michaelaaa7 2 years ago
\i think they only tend to school when they feel uncomfortable or under threat the rest of the time they just 'hang around' and do very little tbh!
To see an example look at the vid with the BKG poor cardinals can't get away so keep moving!

hi there, um do u think a silver shark would eat neon tetras?
cos my S.D are 12-15cm across and havent eaten the newly born guppies. they completely ignore them

I swear everyone uses this music for their aquarium videos...Makes me laugh. Nice tetras anyhow.

Lol. I know they do huh! Well there is a limited selection so... if we could upload our own music that would be sweet, but we have to choose from what they have... Thanks for your comment though, and happy...aquariuming?

I know that a tank needs to be cycled in order to take care of tetras,so how did u cycle it? is a 5 gallon tank ok for 5 tetras?
ssssssbob 2 years ago
go to a friends house or someone you know with a cycled tank, get their filter media or sponge and squeeze it into a cup, it should be brown dirty water, throw that into your tank and it should be cycled ASAP, just test the water to be safe
also if that someone can just give you their sponge or filter media itll help

Nice tank, Jesse. The Neons are beautiful. I've had a high mortality rate with mine. They just disappear. I'm sure the scavengers are to blame. I don't believe they kill & eat them, though. They just clean up the mess, doing what nature designed them to do. My water isn't the problem either. I blame the local fish store and their poor upkeep of the fish they sell. I wish you the best with these guys. Have a great day.
MoreQuestionsToo 2 years ago
Well thank you very much for your comment, it is much appreciated. I would very much like to help you decrease the mortality rate amongst your Tetra. Perhaps you could tell me what other fish you have? What are the 'scavengers" you refer to? If they are just disappearing there could only be very few options: You have a big killer in there like and Angelfish, Cichlid, Many species of cats, Oscar, Gourami, and even some more unlikely culprits like a Balloon Molly or a Red finned or Bala shark.cont
jesselehmann 2 years ago
MoreQuestionsToo 2 years ago
Usually smaller unsuspecting predators will injure a Tetra then pick it off later, but you say yours are disappearing our right... Ok so if not a predator then its not your water cuz you said that it was fine, and that would leave a corpse. So they are either jumping out of your tank and dying then being eaten by your cat or dog before you see them, I HAVE HAD Tetra jump out and an animal will eat them, or they are being sucked into your External filter and slowly digested by bacterium cont'd
jesselehmann 2 years ago
I have had about 4 fish jump out of the tank. I found those. I've recenyly put a lid on the tank. I have no 4 legged pets. There are no fish corpses. The filters are not sucking them up. I did find about 3 fish that perished overnight that were stuck to the intake. The rest just disappear. They're there when I retire, but gone when I awaken. Many people on the net have this problem with Neons, but they have unsuspecting predators. Do you suspect my Gold Loach (Ra). He's the largest in the tank.
