The British formed the Association of something and wanted to shorten the name. However Asser wasn't exactly nice sound, so they to Soc and added cer to the end. Thus the name soccer was born.  Americans being the copy-cats we are, took up the phrase, then the British sort of stopped saying that, but it stuck in America, Or that's what I found out.
