Actually, when the SLCD was booting up, it's brightness was (possibly) on full, most likely a very high setting, and the AMOLED was at a low setting. As you can see later on in 0:31 to 0:37, the SLCD dims down to a black level equivalent to the AMOLED one.
@fizixs Well, that's not exactly true...you obviously don't know what you're talking about...The SLCD didn't come before amoled...it is as new technology as the amoled, they are different technologies, so one is not the evolution of the other...they're just different branches. One made by Samsung, and the other made by Sony. And the nexus s has SuperAmoled, you just put that 2 from nowhere.
@Nillie66 Yes, but when you browse the internet, or play games with colours, it literally drinks your battery...you are not gonna have a black screen all the time...But SLCD is sharper, and with non-saturated colours (they don't look like cartoons), and the resolution is way better...do you prefer deeper blacks to a better resolution ans sharper images?? ANd the blacks are great, but the whites...are a bit bluish. They all have pros and cons. I love the Super amoled plus though, it is way better
i use to do tests like these when i had a pioneer kuro plasma and an LCD tv, the results were similar when videoing, although im sure amoled blacker than kuro. amoled is great in a phone, although ive compared an iphone 4 and a galaxy s and really the benefit isn't there for phone, as the end of the day, it's a phone, you dont stare at the screen for hours on end. when amoled tvs come out, with 65" and 80" models thats when this stuff will really be impressive. good comparison none the less.
My iphone 4 sucks big time if i turn the brightness to maximum and switch of the lights having a plain black wallpaper.. guess SLCD is kinda better.. SAMOLED has got the best blacks but the colors are artificial with intense saturation.. SLCD is kinda sharp and renders natural colors compared to my iphone 4..
Ive done the test with two handsets, there is a noticeable colour difference, but the SLCD has a sharper image, it is especially noticeable with text.
you just ruined my day :( i'm expecting to buy nexus in a couple of weeks and there's a fat chance i'll get the amoled version which is obviously better
@pikaaacz same thing here! but I really don't care, both displays have their positiv and negative sides! Both are great displays! Can't wait to get mine, I ordered Friday, it should be here on Wednesday!
@hUman74 Wow thats a good attitude which is more than I can say for 99% of youtubers. I havent seen either on but I just recieved my HTC Desire and not sure which one it is because I havent opened the box yet..
The only thing I'd prefer about the SLCD is the lack of screen burn in from the menu bar (I don't own a Nexus One, so I can't vouch for this, but from what I've read it's a fairly big problem with the AMOLED displays.
i dont think people should judge just on the black level. ive found that the super lcd is more power efficient and its more responsive as well as being cheaper and slightly sharper. id prefer that to the amoled. even comparing slcd to super amoled we see the samoled is so vivid and preety while its not as sharp as the slcd
@LFiers i work in carephone warehouse part time. but i have had both the amoled and slcd(current) version of the htc desire. just by use on a day to day basis ive seen the importance of the slcd. my brother has a galaxy s and ive seen the desire to be sharper whilst having less colours which is an htc specific trait and less contrast which is a trait of the screen types. which leads to the conclusion that the super amoleds are better at colours and the slcd's are sharper
f.ck the netherlands i ordered a htc desire 1 month ago and didnt get it now they say i get it in 3-5 days and i see now that im gonna get a f*cking slcd and not amoled anymore f*ck them.
If they keep the slcd than is htc desire f*cked up
@MrTk58 Just take a chill. I have a S-LCD too, and texts look much better on it. Since i'm using it mostly to keep up with the news (due my line of work) I put a high value on being able to read stuff on my desire. The S-LCD is more comfortable to read with imo.
@LFiers No i still let the order finish i compared with mine friends desire and in the sunlicht is the amoled bether i cant see the bether vieuw in the sunlight with slcd and if you are in a dark room after 15min a half hour your eyes is gonna hurt from the backlight of the slcd but the desire is a great supephone
@LFiers Google PenTile Matrix. It's a procedure used mainly by samsung to lower matrix cost by using different pixel sizes. It makes it difficult to count pixels using regular methods. Their average count though is lower than advertised.
@kahuna3901 meh i kinda prefer slcd....amoleds have that dumbass pentile matrix which makes it annoying to read stuff on it.....not to mention shorter life....cant wait for oleds that overcome that crap
@Meissama well i can see it from much further. it all depends on how sensitive your eyes are. You can also notice how fuzzy the text is when zoomed out esp if youve used a higher res screen such as the droid
@hjf3022 Are you blind? Can't you read? The fact is the usage of a digital medium to show a comparisson of 2 other digital media simply isn't possible, because you can not see what the effect of the medium you are watching right now is.
So to put it more simple, you can not know how the screen you are watching this vid with, effects the images.
@Gardash111 Dude, i can see the difference, the difference is in how dark the AMOLED screen can generate black. This is easily visible in the video, as the LCD screen is backlit. I have done this test in real life using the two different screens, and this video is a fairly accurate representation of what really happens.
@hjf3022 Please, at least try to think logical okay? Now, I'm sure you have seen it happen in real life, since everyone on the internet seems to know things are true and always see those things happen in real life. It is like a youtube-rule.
Can you atleast try to react to what I have said? Do you know what a bottleneck is in the business/management world? Well in this case, the camera and the screen you are watching it are the bottleneck. They can't represent the real-life comparison.
Wow this can't be SLCD, it looks like crap to even the iPhone 4's IPS LCD display. I don't even like AMOLED anymore either though after seeing SAMOLED.
@LFiers well for me its better, because one of the main features i use is text messaging and web browsing among others in which i read text a lot, so i prefer the screen resolution of the slcd, while the amoled is brighter, that can be easily solved by just increasing the brightness level, being able to read very clearly the text in my emails, etc is very important for me, cheers!
@lepimpazo Thanks for reply. What about the pictures, graphics and watching video on a SLCD? Is it also as good as AMOLED? Thanks. I have a HTC Desire in my room now which I am suspecting is a SLCD one and am trying to get all the info I can so I can decide wether or not to completely open it or take it back and try to get a AMOLED one. Are they really that different?
@LFiers I am a proud owner of the htc desire slcd, and i prefer it to the amoled due to the fact that i use it for work more than for playing games and watching videos. I prefer it to be more focused on sharpness than on the colors, cheers!
Super Amoled really wins even if i dont have a super amoled screen but still....

why do the black levels look the same at around 0:30~ but not elsewhere?
a176 1 year ago
@a176 It's the effect of non-black pixels, which becomes darker at that time. On an AMOLED display black just remains pitch black.
MaxArt2501 1 year ago
@a176 Because at that point, the automatic brightness sensor kicks in, whereas both screens are at full brightness until that point.
