The center console also plays a role in the seat's safety design. It has solid very heavy brick like box under the center console box which acts like a crush box so that the seats can divert thier energy from the side crash to, before the seat's own frame starts to crumble to take the remainder of the energy. This is a key design in the SIPS system of Volvo.
If you notice, the seat moves away from the crash forces. This is because the seat is mounted to a reinforced structure, has a HUGE steel tube at the base, and the side of the car has a "rammer" which ensures the seat takes the impact instead of the driver. Then, the airbag is integrated into the seat itself and has a special shape to also protect the head, regardless of seating position.
This system was first deployed on the 850, as the SIPS system. Works VERY well in the real world...
You should also note that the car has been designed to be somewhat more 'compliant' than you might expect in a side impact, this is to provide some cushioning so as to work the best in the most common types of these accidents (normally against another vehicle).
When another vehicle is involved, the impact zone is larger and more cushioning is provided. The 'B' pillars have a special shape to help capture these forces and direct them.
Some even have a factory roll "bar" in the roof ( mine )!
i love this car...

There was a lot of intrusion, but the dummy looked very well protected inside.
