this is beautiful. i have to write a paper about bach and about this piece. its for my music appreciation class. im really looking forward to this paper. although i dont know where to start...hmm anyhow, this really is lovely.
@ilovejbxkatrillion i just read that he had inserted a melody composed of the notes B A C H which is the german equivalent of Bflat ,A ,C and B at the end of the piece
@100Noemi these aren't violins. they're baroque instruments which are called, if I recall correctly, viols. These were MEANT to be played rested on the lap.
For me, this is the best rendering of Contrapunctus 1 I've heard on Youtube. Perfect tempo, not much vibrato, etc... Speaking generally, I think that Contrapuncti 1 and 14 are most beautiful if played by a quartet. What a pity Bach didn't manage to complete the last fugue!... :(
Thanks for posting. Great performance. Can you tell me what BBC program this is from? They all play so well together. I would like to see more of them.
A little smile round the corners of Bach's mouth? I wouldn't be surprised.

Profound piece of music.

Bach's mastery of counterpoint is evident. This has that florid, swirling quality to it.
