  • My guess why the last boss was always the easiest for the gradius series was because it was so weak and that it why it needed the high defence for it's protection. On the other hand, for Salamander 2 arcade the final boss is insane!!!

  • Aside from the screen stretching (=_=), the addition of boss and BGM captions is a nice touch.

  • @Seahawk0027 If you add "yt:stretch=4:3" to the tags it should change the aspect ratio to 4:3.

  • Gradius II (the game of this video) had its ports on NES, PC Engine, Playstation and PSP (I guess). Gradius 2 was an original game for the MSX. In fact, there is a sequel of that game for the same console titled Gradius 3 (or Nemesis 3, totally different to Gradius III of Arcade and its ports). Greetings from Mexico. Sorry my bad english.

  • I've beaten Nemesis III for my channel....excellent game. Gradius II on MSX however is very difficult, but still great.

  • The area where you are at with the "Club" Boss took me forever to get through but 8 times was a charm for me. Thankgod I racked in plenty of lives for the end!

  • Gradius II is the official arcade version.

    Gradius 2 is an MSX1 game.

    Parodius IS the Gradius parody(Parody + Gradius=Parodius).But Chichibinti rika appears in the 2nd stage,Shadow dancer(Name of that final mid-boss) appears in the final stage.

    I can come close on Gradius 4, and halfway through on Gradius 5.

  • mmmmm, I see, I am creating a version of Gradius in which the force field was replaced by reflector force field, all kinds of shots will be bounced or redirected to whom the shot but repels lasers, also create a plasma cannon and a plasma machine gun

  • oh i understand makes it easier to use the frontal shields good strategy at this stage, but I'm better with the force field, even if it lasts less time protecting more and you never know where you can come a surprise shot of those enemies

  • Yes I certainly know about the surprise shots ^^;.

    I recently have developed skill with force field. It is good because there it less thought process on making sure that shots hit your frontal shield and not your ship.

    I am trying to clear the PC Engine CD-ROM version of Gradius II, force field will be absolutely necessary in that mode because of the high speed and high fire rate of enemies =).

  • why you dont use the force field to protect all the ship?

  • When I made this run I was not able to use force field effectively. The durability of the front shield is an advantage because not many enemies will shoot from behind until the end of the game.

  • It's a Gradius tradition =P. I think all players are glad that the final boss is weak, Gradius games are hard enough without super difficult final bosses >.>;;.

  • in FoxM1, the Voice clips are stored in entries 112 to 137. Ripping them is a bit of a pain, but i'm going to do it anyway since noone else seems to have done it.

  • That is a newer name. It's original name was just "Crab". Confusion between "L" and "R" sounds in Japanese/English translations lead to some sites calling it "Club".

  • It is ashamed that they never released this in the US back in the day, I would of brought it, like I did with the first Gradius game. But, you have to blame the marketing of Life Force/Salamander for that. At least I can download it on the Wii.

  • I know right? For whatever reason Konami never saw fit to bring any competent Gradius ports over to America =/, and they still have that attitude, US has not got the update for Gradius Rebirth yet when the rest of the world does so =(.

  • Since I got so used to playing Gradius II on the Famicon I was wondering when I was ever going to hear THE FINAL ENEMY music. Since the famicon version you hear it all the time when you fight the boss I figure it was like that in the arcade version, but you only hear at the final stage.

  • Yep. There is a mod for the FC Gradius II that replaces the boss music in the game with the correct music, it sounds really strange to hear it that way. You can find the videos on youtube, search for FC GRADIUS II ARCADE HACK.

  • Mmm, yeah, but they're not too hard to avoid in Gradius II. In Gradius IV, you pretty much have to let them take one, otherwise they might take them all when you try dodging, they're really fast.

    Of course, it was on the PSP 'Gradius Collection' and I had to keep reloading my saves as I kept DYING! *Growl*

    Maybe I'll be able to do a run though on one life some day.

  • Good job! Don't worry about saving and cheating too much at first -- my first time beating Gradius II was the PC Engine CD version, I must used the Konami code a bazillion times trying to beat it =).

    It just takes lots of practice. Eventually you will have an "AH HA" moment, and all the enemy placement and shooting patterns will suddenly make sense, you will figure out a safe route through the levels, and all that will be left is to improve your reaction time =).

  • incredible playing sir! i died in the exact same spot when i played this in the arcades back in the day.Cant believe how close i came to finishing this. i always used the ripple laser with two way missile and full shield thinking that was the best configuration.Not easy on the trigger finger though ,oooof!

  • My brother is good at that type, although he uses shield instead.

    I could never get used to the force field power because my play style tends to get me hit a lot, and there isn't enough power up capsules in Gradius II to keep getting it back.

    And I know what you mean about the button pressing, I've wrecked two gamepads playing Gradius games, on my current one I had to open it up and switch the buttons because the contact switches underneath got stuck =).

  • On the TG-CD version, i am stuck at the gun wall...lol...i guess i won't even be able to beat thisgAme...but i' m so close...( i got gameover so no power-ups for me)

  • For the TG-CD version, if you have no power ups, just stay by the bottom cannon while holding autofire.

    When the cannon is destroyed, make sure you kill any turrets coming out of the hatch, and be patient, the boss will destroy itself.

    If you're desperate, use the Konami Code (Up up down down left right left right I II, maybe switch the order of I and II buttons), you get three options and your shield power up.

  • The hard part about the final part of the game is that the enemy bullets go right through the wall-walking enemy, whereas normally, they just disappear. You have to guess where the bullets are coming from.

  • Another problem is that depending on where you are the turrets will shoot the two shots at crazy angles and different speeds (5:42 & 7:06 & 7:18).

  • Dang; those walking turrets really tore you up. You should have gone with a Full Barrier or a Force Field.

  • I tried with the full shield, but Club tore it up really quick.

    I've never had a good experience with the force field in Gradius II. It only takes three hits, and there's not enough power capsules like in Gradius 4/5 to be constantly getting it back. The hit box is stricter here than in Gradius 3/4/5, so I end up taking more hits than I'd like.

    Protection from all directions sounds good, but it just doesn't work for me here =/.

  • Thanks. When I died the first time I thought I wasn't going to make it, those turrets shoot their bullets at different speeds depending on the angle. It was really frustrating ^^;.

  • Thanks. I have that version too. It's an excellent port, but it is very much more difficult than the arcade version due to the smaller screen. Plus, the extra stage gives you more places to die lol.

    The last stage is seriously impossible on Professional difficulty ;D. Club takes up way more of the screen.
