Sometimes Bach seems divinely inspired. In spite of the excellent performance by Chance, it's the orchestra's winding melody that captures me here. Fascinating.
What a beautiful rendition. Bach is wonderful but an interpretation and performance like this is needed to make it extra enjoyable. Thank you Michael Chance, Roy Goodman and the Brandenburg Consort. And thank you to Bacholoij of course for posting such wonderful video's. Wonder where you find those!
Michael Chance's careful pronunciation of some rather similar German words adds to the understanding of the piece's intent. Love the heartbeat of the low strings with his glorious alto hovering above.
sorry for my ignorance; this is the first time I heard the voice of "countertenor." He sings so beautifully. But I wonder why alto is also not good for this piece. Maybe, someone in this field can educate me?
The only thing I know is that the original Matthaus passion was sung by men/boys. (women were not allowed to sing or speak in church) I think that's why it's still often sung by men
Bach taught at Leipzig Univ., an all men institution. From his students, he'd pick out the best singers to perform at two of the four churches in Leipzig every Sunday. Sopranos were sung by boys and altos were counter tenors and boys. Bach did use women in church, however, with a bit of controversy at the time.
@ahzie99 We know certain facts, but there are still things we do not know. Did Bach prefer the sound & use of the male voices or was he just coping? Would he have preferred using female voices as he did in many of his secular works if such a choice was possible? Or was the use of these male voices more suitable not only because of tradition but also because of the acoustics of the church where even the slightest vibrato is magnified.
@keisky3 : I am too busy with the rice harvest to leave the field, but I should tell you that the male counter-tenor voice is but that and the alto voice is but that and never the twain shall meet. A treble is not a soprano &c.
To sing Bach is a major challange and Chance does it better than most male altos. He seems to perceive exactly what Bach wants; just an amazing voice and excellent musical perception!!!
In comparison to Robin Blaze (You can listen to him in Johannes Passion-clips) Chance has more vibrato and the church's acoustics is more resounding. I find Chance's voice more balanced; Blaze's voice seems to have some sort of dryness, not as round and sound as Chances voice.
this is my fav passion and the true emosion and ofcourse passion bach put into the composition is incredible and only a great singer such as this can make us feel the true emotion

What about the church? It's a huge cathedral it seems! I would love to know where and which cathedral is it.

I like this Aria because it's so quiet, the extreme pain we are suffering is lived inside ourselves, into our deep inner soul,
I deem it has a great Lutheran meaning.

The DVD versions of Bach's Passions are wonderful - clear video, excellent sound, Michael Chance... well worth the cost.
