@HaloCE14 There's a Cab Forward on display at the California Railroad Museum, Restored to the point of exterior, I don't know if she still runs though.
Its to bad they did not simulate the entire Donner Pass route. The Roseville Sub and Donner Pass line runs from Roseville, California to Sparks, Nevada and they only simulated Colfax to Truckee.
This is quite a route. I live in Nevada near Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Carson City. I have railfaned Donner Pass an insane amount of times over the years. I live by the east end of Donner pass.
Dude, your fair use disclaimer is completely bogus. Reviewing the music would be fair use; using the music as a background to a review of something else is not.
I have this route and agree that it is pretty awsome. the only complaint I have is that often the engines will stall after a short time if I leave from truckee and it feels a little slow for my tastes . But then again it is probably the way I drive that causes these problems
It takes getting used to driving steam up hills. I've had the same problem. I've heard that this occasionally happened in real life until you could build your steam back up. However, it is also important not to overload your train.
Good point, though the REALLY funny thing is that, using default consist, I took a a cab-forward and got it to go about 130MPH going from Soda Springs to Coalfax without derailing it. Either the consist I used was super durable or I just got lucky
Do you have the Cambrian Route version 2? 3dtrainstuff makes that route too. It would be cool if you could do a review on that addon too. I don't have it. But maybe your review of it could convince me.
Extremely well done. This route is like the Oddessey of rail lines. The winter/summer changes are spectacular. Great presentation too, showing the Consolidations with smaller trains was a nice touch, and TWO CAB FORWARDS ON ONE TRAIN?! Epic!
after watching more thurowly thru the vid, I noticed something that is inacurate(other then the cab forward tank engine) In frieght service, SP never double-feaded Cab Farwards due to their power ripping apart drawbars.
I used to do it too 'cause it does look so much more epic. They did however double-head passenger trains with them so keep thaqt in mind when you put together express consists.
only on passenger trains. I've watched countless documentries on the engines and all the historians say the same thing, only on passnger due to aging carsand extremely powerful engines.
Is the Consolidation a "Harriman"? I have a model of a Union Pacific one made by Lionel that looks very much like the Southern Pacific ones seen here.
Great route and nice review! I'd love to see a modern version after running the transition era route. Impressive scenery and the snow tunnels are amazing.
This route has no major flaw, but some small quirks (snow inside of the snowsheds, default sounds for the diesels, etc). I do have some perfect routes coming soon, but for payware, a route can't have any flaws (or as few as MSTS will allow).
BTW great video man, I have this route and can honestly it was well worth the money. I agree with you the steam locomotives both the consolidations and the cab forwards are awsome. its a real shame that only one cab forward still survives today. but for the route all I can say is AWSOME.
they are, one is based on SP's operations in West Colton, CA the other is the coast line route which is part of the mainline from Los Angeles to San Fransisco.
I also bought this right when it came out and never looked back. It's probably my favorite of all the add-on routes I have and the locomotive's and rolling stock are superb. Definatly a class A++ route.
Great review! I've had this route since it first came out in 2005 and it's still one of my favorites. As you said, the cab forwards are great and in my opinion, worth the price of the route all by themselves. I am a bit surprised to see no mention of the 2 expansion packs "Storm 0f 1952" and "The End of a Era". Do you plan on doing a follow up about these later on?
Storm of 1952 will eventually be a mini-review (at the least). I don't know about End of an Era - $20 for just activities is a bit much. I may, though.
@HaloCE14 Do you mean the others Cab Forward?

@nkproad777 Those are 2-8-0 C-9s part of the SP class.

@spgeneralservice1654 That explains those directional thingys on the stack.
nkproad777 11 months ago
@nkproad777 No some of the C-9s don't have any of those smoke stacks.

@spgeneralservice1654 Kinda wish that 3dts made one without that stack, and the standerd one they had.
nkproad777 9 months ago
@HaloCE14 That would truely be an awesome sight.

Yes, it's payware. You can find it at 3DTrainstuff's website, which is listed in the credits and in the sidebar.

Probably not too much. As long as you can adjust to seeing 1940s-50s automobiles, it should be fine.

At 0:10, there's no tender behind the Cab Foward.

i notice that to

Yes, this has been pointed out earlier. Again, 3DTS made that consist, I just failed to notice the missing tender.

Restoring a steam loco...much easier to say then it is to do.

Cab-forward's were always oil burners. Would have been a hard job for the fireman to move the coal from the tender to the firebox!

Truly spectacular route, and review, only a few criticisms to be made though:
1, you sound more nasally than normal, and your voice sorta changed to a different tone that's not as suitable somewhere in the beginning
2. at about the 6 minute mark, the volume just jumped, my crappy headphones maxed out there sound output (which isn't a lot)
