Many of the people are fundimentalists and would not be willing to change. The strong hold can still be invaded and much of it destroyed along with many of the Taliban, but if the majority of the local population is against any change, then it would only be a setback. The problem is that many in Pakistan do not see it. Its estimated that up to 35% of the population support or at least sympathize with the people in the tribal areas. The enemy to them is the US in Afganistan. The Pakistani government would rather make deals than strike back. Altho to a certain extent I can't blame them. But it is creating an unstable Pakistan that is becoming more parylized everyday. I'd like to hear your perception.

If this simplistic view is correct, the solution would be unpopular indeed.

I do not see an increase of US troops in Afganistan as the solution. In fact I believe that may tip the balance toward the Taliban and a takover of the government in Pakistan.
