This brilliant song is actually a pretty accurate retelling of the introduction of the Giant Hogweed into Britain. It is not fatal, but causes burns when handled. I have never heard a horticultural story told like this. Heracleum mantegazzianum!!!!!!!
@FredericoCoelhoNunes The Giant Hogweed is a poisonous plant, fatal to humans. There was an outbreak of it in England in the early 70s which is where Gabriel got the idea.
Yes, tapping existed before Hackett, but he was the first to be able to be skilled enough to play it in a viable way for recording. Guitar Player magazine concluded that Hackett was the first rock guitarist to successfully incorporate tapping in his playing. He was also a pioneer in sweep picking. Finally, Hackett has established excellence not only in electric guitar, but in classical guitar as well. Perhaps the most overlooked great guitarist of our era.
can you imagine the degree of imagination and talent that takes to write something like this or the musical box? i look at something like this and then something like achy breaky heart and cant help but laugh, genesis were fucking geniuses.
The guitar intro by Steve Hackett is an example of the right handed hammer on technique (sometimes called tapping). People usually think of Eddie Van Halen as the first guitarist to popularize this, but Steve was doing it here on record in 1971. Van Halen's first record didn't come out until 1978.
@zkxb tapping is very old, the main inspiration of Eruption was the solo of Heartbreaker by Led Zeppelin, released in 69, but it existed before that as well.
Just so you know, the Giant Hogweed is a real threat. Look at the abandoned apple orchards outside of Lyons, NY. It is a noxious, invasive, and dangerous plant that is very hard to contain or control. Watch out! The Giant Hogweed is coming for you!!!!
@sgtgrash If you're looking for a slightly more contemporary take on prog, I highly recommend Spock's Beard. They formed in the 90's and draw easy comparisons to greats like Genesis and Gentle Giant.
@DiatonicSoul Yeah, they do crossover a lot from track to track with pop-sounding songs. To be honest, I haven't heard much of their more recent stuff, but I have their first 3 albums, which were the basis for my recommendation. If you missed what I was going for, try looking up "Thoughts" or "In the Mouth of Madness", where they sound like an awesome kind of blend of Genesis, Gentle Giant, and Dream Theater.
omg at 6:40 it's soooooooo good, that melody in the back ground... the way its played with those volume swells.... genesis is the best, i dont see how any pot smoking 17 year old couldn't like it! i wish i was alive in the time that that was all pot smoking 17 year olds were listening too: prog. i must've shot john lennon or something to be reincarnated in the 90's... :P
If u like this song and u love 70,s Genesis there's a real treat for u right here on you tube. Transatlantic put out a live DVD of their World-win Tour, and on the last show of the tour in London they do Return Of The Giant Hogweed. But guess who walks out and play's with them. Steve Hackett, Simply amazing. There's several uploads of it. Make sure u find the one from the DVD much better quality. enjoy
You're right! The Day of the Triffids was undoubtably the inspiration for 'Hogweed' and the stories have many elements in common (intelligent poisonous plants discovered in Russia...).
lol, this reminds me of 9th grade--I got sent to detention sooo many times for tapping out Tony Banks keyboard runs on my desk in class : ) Everyone else I knew worshipped Page, Hendrix, Clapton, et. al, but my heroes were totally Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett & Rutherford...
@bll758 Same here! (I don't mean about detention and keyboard runs ha-ha) But mentioning tapping things out, I'm not exactly sure who it was that "invented" hammer-ons and pull-offs, but of one thing I am certain, it wasn't Eddie Van Halen! My heroes still are the likes of Genesis and Yes.
EVER that could use the scientific name of a plant as an actual lyric in a song and make it sound good... This is a band that makes you think of how shitty music is nowadays unlike of the real stuff like this...
It is a shame that the original artists cannot forget the past and reunite, although the initial reasons I am sure were valid. I can tell that this type of music requires much detailed practice, so to dedicate to it means to play it exclusively a lot to get it right. This is true after being so removed from it for so long, it would be like them learning a new music form all over again. Perhaps this was considered in later years. You don't wake up, turn on a switch and start playing this stuff!
@pinkfloydinspace This song implies that Giant hogweed is a communism which spred from Russia 50 years ago ( album was done in 1972 probably), so KGB officers were busy to damage with nails vynil of this record, i am not joking!!
@SupperOfTheMightyOne That's not patronizing, that's a statement from the realm of 'if' .You've made a relatively patronizing statement with your original comment.
You've chosen to critique instead of celebrating the achievement of pioneers of rock music.Today's production standards are based on what they learned from the past. The people involved with Genesis and many bands like them started pushing the recording/producing boundries forcing technology to keep up with them.
@bangingdrums Maybe you don't realize how closely these people work together, musicians and instrument manufacturers. The same goes for the other side of the studio window. That and the fact that technology hit lightspeed in the 80s has made today's standards what they are.A person doesn't even need to sing in key. They just 'enhance' or auto-tune.What's the point.Young people are getting ripped off in the talent/artistic dept. with most of today's poptarts. It's a shameful situation.
@dermotoblong Greed has almost totally destroyed music. They've taken creative expression and twisted into a commodity that they cram down the general public's throat with over exposure. Musicians have been replaced with Performance Artists that design clothes and make perfume. You can get a record deal now because your parents own a hotel or you played the fool in some reality show.
being a member of this generation I can do no more than sit here and hear the same repeated garbage on the radio.....i mean really....a song about friday!?!? what the hell? now Genesis is what I call music, songs with meaning and well thought lyrics with intelligence behind them....not how we're gonna shoot someone, cheat on someone, or do all the drugs we can. Not to mention Genesis with Peter Gabriel being completely underrated....which in my opinion is quite sad......
@FondlingReply No apology required as I'm well aware of that fact due to my attention paying skills. As soon as they realized how much money they could make, they saturated the market with easy to forget jingles designed to separate a fool from his/her money. This practice is alive and well today. They call it pop music, and it sucks hard and plenty. Fortunately, there are still musicians, like the ones you're referring to, out there that are desperately trying to fix that problem.
@bangingdrums Well if you're talking about pop as in what's on the radio, of course it sucks, it's the radio, but there are a TON of bands that work within pop song structure (and even get radio play) that are far from "suck". This may be an opinion, but I'm assuming you've heard of the White Stripes? Not saying they're anything like early Genesis, but if The White Stripes aren't pop that doesn't suck, I don't know what is.
@SupperOfTheMightyOne well if you by the album instead of listenig to it on the internet or downloading it the cd quality is much better you can hear every little sound they made and im a musician nnnnnnooooo not the best in the world but to be honest analog recordig is coming back cause to much probleme witch digital and its not the same ohhhh well love genesis anyway take care
