  • 5L-23R was decomissioned and 5R-23L is simply now 5-23 since this incident. That should help prevent this from happening again.

  • Folks, i know that this stuff goes both ways......ATC can screw up quite badly, and unfortunately ( for passengers especially.) so can Airline crews. but in this case, Wow.1489 really screwed this up. they should not have just rolled onto a runway by accident, during a 'lost taxi episode". jeez. and that they were most certainly NOT cleared to cross. blown away at the bit where one of the pilots utters in the mic, "Lady, we are on a runyway right now.... unsure of position. yeah. great

  • 'ya know. i listened again. this Woman Controller did NOTHING WRONG. AT ALL. this 4946 crew, screwed this up totally. lousy communication and phraseology, confusion, mumbling, and telling her they are now on a runway ( that was "After" the FedEX departed, btw...) that crew fucked this up, royally. and all they did here was create problems for ATC. how can you all side with this lame crew who continuted taxiing onto an active Runway, knowing planes are taking off?? jeez. laughable..

  • you are all stoned.  did you NOT hear the ATC woman give "Clear" instructions to the crew, in which they completely screwed up. what is everyone's problem here? clear instructions for NOVEMBER to TANGO, advise crossing 16". end of F'n story. jeez. the 'garbly' crew ( horrible phraseology and mumbling......) should have STOPPED their god damn aircraft the second they took an unfamiliar turn. why do Aircraft Crews "Keep Rolling" down an unfamiliar Taxiway?? Stop & confess.

  • @drumdude46 They did stop and confess. As soon as they realized they had done something wrong. As far as how they handled the situation from there, yes it was somewhat garbled and confused. Both parties are clearly at fault however as the controller should absolutely not have cleared another aircraft to take off with an aircraft reporting that it was at the wrong place on the field, especially given the crew's insistence that they were close to the active runway.

  • @fortitude3030 the controller had not yet been alerted to the fact that they were "Actually"...ON a runway when she cleared FedEX for takeoff. it is assumed at this point that, she was just 'getting back' to several other aircraft (see; workload) and keeping her spacing and flow commitments. that's all. it amazes me when the crew of 1489 actually microphones that, "Lady, we're on a runway right now..??? what??who the hell had given them clearance to just, "Roll randomly onto a rwy?

  • I'm an ATC and I find unbelievable all this,expecially how she shuts up the UN1448 crew, during a position report, to clear the USAir to takeoff (a takeoff clearance with a strayed aircraft on the maneuvering area is out of imagination to me);in a very similar scenario in October 2001 in LIML airport occurred 118 civil victims. May they rest in peace, and may a huge thanks be given to the USAir flight crew, who showed the real professional and judgment that should always be put in this job.

  • This is amazing, because they're saying they're on a runway now and somebody took off over them a minute ago, but she still doesn't get it. It doesn't sound like they were on the runway when the first plane took off, but if they were sitting there and the second one did, and that plane used enough of the runway, it could have been a collision! I hope the controller paid more attention to what pilots were telling her in the future.

  • The United Airlines crew should have been paying attention during taxi, but getting lost (and perhaps at an airport they haven't flown to before) can happen and happen easily.

    However, there is no excuse for what the ATC did here. I am glad that the UA pilot advised ATC about being on an active runway and that USAir held short of the runway and refused to takeoff until the mess was sorted out.

    Also, clearly UA was on an active runway BECAUSE you could hear the Fedex plane takeoff over ATC.

  • God Bless those Fedex pilots for using caution in that situation. And even though the United pilots f"d up pretty bad, atleast they got their act together and properly warned atc of their mistake. I think the ATC messed here for having cleared the Fedex to take off!

  • This is a perfect example of why it is so crucial (and mandatory) for tower controllers in other countries to speak the universally accepted language to ALL aircraft on frequency. That USair crew saved a plane load of folks by following along. Can you imagine if this scenario had played out in Mexico where they're speaking spanish to half of the traffic?

  • Ugh, it was so creepy when that FedEx 1662 was taking off. I don't know why the ATC cleared the number 2 when United said "somebody just took off". That's how accidents happen.

  • Way to go for the US Air Capt not blindly accepting a bad clearance. I can understand getting lost in the fog. Can't understand a controller clearing take-offs without knowing where everyone is on the airport. Controllers can blow it, just like pilots... don't put all your confidence in them.

  • The controller should have listned to the united pilot when he said he was on an active runway, that should have alerted her that something was wrong. If it wasn't for the US pilot saying he wont take off there could have been a serious accident.

  • the pilot did say 2-3-Left at one point. She really should have realized all possibilities. Just taking off airplanes when there is a descrepency of where one is-is absolutely nuts. Had US Air 2998 not taken things into his own hands they would have collided.

  • I dont know why the controller would still try to send off the USAir when United thought they might be having a runway incursion. She should have stopped everything when they told her they were by Kilo since its no where near where they were supposed to be and by 23L.

  • Its a mainline a319 from ord. All UAX flights begin with 5000 or greater. PVD UAX operator is Gojet and maybe Trans States.

  • Plus GoJet or Trans States would use their respective Call signs (Lindbergh for GoJet, Waterski for Trans States) than United's call sign
