@bricks454 In all fairness, Tim Yeung was the original drummer for this song, who, in my opinion, plays mainly with speed and lacks a lot of rhythm. In fact, a lot of cymbal fills on this video were added by Roddy.
Holy fuck..how does he switch between his hands and keep up the blasting absolutely perfect...fckin sickkk if u ask me..this guys got some inbuilt alien tech seems like
I disagree somewhat. I think he is certainly capable of more power, but with Hate Eternal, that would actually be a bad thing since the song is almost entirely blasting. It would get really obnoxious if all you heard was the snare the entire song. Often times producers will pull back the snares during blast beats because it will sit better with the mix.
@cthep If it gets obnoxious to hear the snare throughout the entire song..then why did Roddy play blastbeats through the whole thing? ;p If the drummer is playing blastbeats and the producer turns down the snare (a lot) then he will most likely piss off the band/drummer :p
Because you are listening to blast beats, not only snare. Dynamics mean anything? And yes, its common practice for to lower snare levels in blast beats, depending on the drummer's style, especially in thick mixes.
@cthep There is very little room for dynamics in death metal (unfortunately). In blastbeats it's extremely important to be able to hear the snare...ever been to a show and you can't hear the snare at all when a drummer starts playing a blastbeat? This isn't the soundguy's fault..it's the drummer.
A lot of drummers soundcheck by slamming on their snare, or when they play backbeats or slower stuff on the snare they hit extremely hard and then you can't hear it when they blast.
Derek among a few other drummers always played their snare at consistent volume no matter what they were playing...this is why you could always hear the snare :p
I understand what you're saying for final mixing purposes of a studio album but still in deathmetal I wouldn't say it is common practice to lower the snare in the mix..atleast not by a lot.
I gotcha, all I'm trying to say is that in my opinion (shared by many others), a super loud snare during blast beats isn't always a good thing, or unnecessary at times.
@TheAnnihilator12 so true. I have noticed that. Im not as fast or good as roddy, but i know my stuff. and i have noticed at lie shows sometimes you can't hear the snare during blasts, and watching vids of my band and our newer songs, i couldnt hear my snare at a blast part. so now i sound check by just doing blast beast that way they adjust the sound to a blast.lol
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yea ive heard a bit of their stuff. but its almost as if he couldnt be bothered actually putting time into the song, so instead he just blast and hits lots of cymbals.
At what point does blasting become more important than making good music? Because that song sucks compared to anything Hate Eternal has ever made. Just because you can blast faster and longer than most people doesn't mean you can make good music. Yes, blast beats are a large part of the songs in Death Metal, but not everything. The song you mentioned is literally all blast beats, and it sounds horrendous. Go back to your blast beats only corner, I'll stick with Roddy and his "shit."
Two Demons is "literally" all blast beats so why aren't you saying anything about that song? MVP is only blast beats for about 1/3 or 1/2 of the song in total. I do agree blasts aren't everything but if he can do them at those speeds and in time, then why not? Nothing against Roddy here by the way, he is fucking amazing.
It's not all blast beats, the very first riff in the song is bomb blasts, the chorus riff is a back beat with double bass, and the bridge is just double bass, if you want to get technical about it. So no, it is not all blast beats. That's why I don't say anything about it. It's a good mixture of extreme beats, and it's put together well to make an awesome song.
I put "literally" in quotations meaning for it to be used like you had used it. Literally means without exaggeration. It sounds to me like you were exaggerating at least a little. MVP is not "literally" all blasts. Double bass, quads, and the breakdown take up a large portion of the song in the end.
Wow, Youtube debates never end like this! Personally, I think both bands are great and have awesome drummers. I guess we all have different tastes, though.

believe me I am all about death metal and blast beats but when ever beat is a blast or 16th double kick its boring and does not sound good. derek roddy is obviously an amazing drummer but this shit is borrrring
Erik wanted Hate Eternal to be as brutal as possible, and with KOAK I think they were close. But these songs still have groove which many people don't seem to see or hear.
roddy actually is very versatile. check out his jazz videos. he's got amazing chops. he plays like a madman in this video because that's all the band required. if you knew much about him, you'd know he doesn't even drum for them anymore. :p
the guys a beast on the drums and beats out most drummers in the whole speed metal genre. deal with it.

He actually is (granted this song is very fast and near the end of his set, so it may not be as strong as the earlier songs).
Derek is one of those guys who may not have the most stick height in his blastbeats, but hes always been one of the "loudest" blasters in deathmetal.
Check the clinic videos on my page and the "King of all Kings" video from France..theres some good drum shots.
Stick height =/= power.

hey man much respect to Derek Roddy and Hate Eternal for doing what they do and keeping it sick, but you have to have respect for the old school Death Metal such as Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy and such my friend. those are the pioneers man and they started everything. But like I always say everyone has there own opinions of what they like so thats cool man

I think this song title refers to Derek.

believe me I am all about death metal and blast beats but when ever beat is a blast or 16th double kick its boring and does not sound good. derek roddy is obviously an amazing drummer but this shit is borrrring

This comment has received too many negative votes show

Erik wanted Hate Eternal to be as brutal as possible, and with KOAK I think they were close. But these songs still have groove which many people don't seem to see or hear.

this is hate eternal its supposed to be relentless and almost tiring to listen to on this album in question

I have checked it and Dereks King of all kings is 9 seconds shorter than Renos version on DVD. Derek is King of all kings

roddy actually is very versatile. check out his jazz videos. he's got amazing chops. he plays like a madman in this video because that's all the band required. if you knew much about him, you'd know he doesn't even drum for them anymore. :p
the guys a beast on the drums and beats out most drummers in the whole speed metal genre. deal with it.

Just asking, is a "chop" a video clip or something?
NicholasJamesWells 4 years ago
It's slang for playing abilities.
Metalhead6six6 4 years ago
Ok thanks!
NicholasJamesWells 4 years ago
yup :D Louis Armstrong coined the term "chops" for a musician's playing abilities.

Loll, it's like pork chops. They taste great and Roddy's chops are great;)
NicholasJamesWells 4 years ago
xD! I like my chops well done. how do *you* like your chops?
mattz1010 4 years ago
I like 'em well done as well. But with a bit of BBQ sauce on:P
