  • Incredible! Hilary Hahn ROCKS <3

  • Comment removed

  • i hear that the soloist and orchestra are not matching by a sixteenth note, it's a little annoying

  • @Shaghayegh11 I think that is how Shostakovitch wrote it

  • Perfect playing: intonation, phrasing, bow control, sound quality … all perfect like always with Hahn. But rather lacking bite, expressionism, wildness, strength, also like always with Hahn.

  • I can imagine that this is the dance of the demons...

  • 2:25 looks fun for the orch play, especially timpani :P

  • Incredibly too clean...

  • @jwunschie14 i don't think anybody has her control.

  • @ggalexhutchings Totally, but I didn't argue that. Not the russian character i am looking for here however. I need some scratches and some roughness! Check out Oistrakh...

  • the guy at 3:03 to the far right, I ALWAYS SEE PALYING CONERTS WITH HILARY! like god, it gets kind of...annoying im not sure why.

  • i hate youtube! is there a option to allow me not to see any comments?

  • must be a fun piece to play :P

  • I have always loved this movement. My favorite part is at 2:27 where the whole thing peaks, and all hell breaks looks. Then when the violin comes back with the theme, it's like the devil himself is playing.

Shostakovich always has such intense themes!!! :)

  • @PIeiadianAgenda Yeah, I agree this part is awesome!! :)

  • love this, ultra violent!

  • That girl smokes too much rosin.

  • Why she plays those accents so sweetly and gently?

  • @dududevynidu Hilary likes to make play all of her pieces a bit more round than how the typical violinist would play them

  • Broken bow hair 1:39 :)

Great playing as usual from Ms. Hahn

  • @eleninamyers 2 days ago I saw this piece played by Kyoko Takezawa and the Philarmonia Orchestra London, and there were many broken bow hair ¬¬. It was a mind-blowing interpretation :)

  • when it's too slow you lose some of the flair. I think this is the perfect tempo

  • @cellobuddy i understand what ur saying, but i think with this tempo, u really get the shostakovich taste and flavor that no other composer puts into his or her works. this movement is also supposed to contrast with the first movement, and at this tempo, it definitely does contrast with the first movement, as well as all the other movements, so i would have to say this tempo is more suitable for this concerto. this tempo also brings out the weird harmonies, the joyful tune, and awkwardness

  • @yangsta72 Well.. Mr Oistrakh plays it much slower, and cooperated with Shostakovich about the music, even 're-wrote' the piece, so I'm pretty sure, his tempo is the right tempo, and increasing it is not helping the Music, I believe..

  • @flashgordo91

well theres a thing called not copying soloists and coming up with something that is in YOUR style of playing.

Now that being said it should still be in good taste. which this definitely is

  • this is way too fast, I don't know what's the point anymore

  • @gulisha520 i think it makes more sense if it's faster. don't wanna heavy scherzo

  • I think it's incredible how Dmitri Shostokovich can blend in his initials in so many of his pieces.

  • wtf is wrong with the volume???

  • Where can i find sheet music to this??? lolz

  • Did she mess up around 2:12?

  • @MrGhanner This whole music is rather mess ... so it really does not matter :)

  • This is my favorite interpretation of this work.

Some people try to give it to much force, while force is needed it tends to sound extremely scratchy and the quality is downed a little. I like power, but you have to use it right.

  • this is really good, i wish i could hear it..

  • They are already in it at 2:28 .....

  • I love how the orchestra really gets in to it around 4:53 and up. :D

  • its not a game dumbtard!!!!!!!!!

  • he meatn the game between the violin and the orchestra maybe...

  • i think so

  • I love this game !!!

  • Waouw ! Wow ! Merveilleux. Inégalable. Génial.

  • Wow! This is an incredibly difficult work for both soloist and orchestra and her command of the movement throughout is nothing short of breathtaking. I am continually amazed by both her performance and recording of the Shostakovich and it seriously makes me lose a bit of faith in the musical community when I see people comb through her videos just to say "she missed this note here." Besides the fact that it's almost never noticeable, I'd hope that we can all act a little more grown up than that.

  • pasztrach, that is the best post ever made on Youtube.

  • OMG what a demonic melody!

  • ...Well, I think is very high spirited and jolly...lol...just kidding, I totally agree with you....it does have that demonic tone to it.

  • Very cacophonic and disturbing music ...

  • agreed.

  • Yeah, Shostakovich is kinda progressive death metal of classical music.

  • @whiterottenrabbit \m/ hail metal brother

  • @ProPipesCodClan \m/ >:-)

  • @whiterottenrabbit as somebody who plays both, i am a huge fan of your comment.

  • Oh sorry. Yes it's D flat. Maybe she got confused with the measure before, in which D is not flat. Who knows...

  • No, it can't be. It should be between bar 24 and 25. Few measures before 25.

  • Which measure?

  • Give the musician some freedom, especially in music like this where some improvisation does not matter since it will not change anything much in this mess of tones ...

  • James, I DO apologize. You're right, she plays a wrong note, I had misunterstood.

  • Awesome!

From some moment on, there is one strand of hair hanging from the upper end of her bow! lol

  • OMG every time I listen to it, it's more and more wonderful!!! Much better even than Oistrakh's....nothing to improve, just perfect

  • I love her, this is a perfect version of the concerto.

  • Lol well like one of my old conductors used to say, if you make a mistake, make sure it's a beautiful mistake.

  • Wow not bad, of course, it doesn't compare to Oistrakh's recording with Mitropoulos, but it's still great. The speed doesn't bother me at all, but man you gotta love that part at 2:28. It always freaks people out whenever I listen to that part in front of them lol.

  • Lol 3 people gave me a thumbs down for this comment, that means 3 people are stupid.

  • but it's not true....she does the right notes! it's written minor there (Gflat is in key signature)...compare it with Oistrakh's or Vengerov's, it's the same.

  • This is my favourite movement. I love when she stops playing and the orchestra picks up it is so amazing. Then she comes back in and makes it fantastic!!!

  • i watch this youtube video almost everyday. hilary is so wonderful and clean!!! her shostakovich 2nd mvmt is incredible!!!

  • Me too!

  • Good observation :)

  • First of all, thanks for sharing this. I like both Hilary Hahn as an artist and this piece. Clearly, she Hilary has this piece down technically.

But I also feel like she plays Shostakovich a little too delicatly for my taste. The artist must attack this movement especially, and I felt like the aggressive energy required to give life to this movement just wasn't there with this performance. Maybe it's the audio quality?

    Still, a great performing artist...

  • 非常好!

  • Orchestra's awesome

  • how come?

  • your words sounds you are a stupid 中国人. 在欣赏完美的音乐表演时分得那么清干什么?还"搞古典音乐的",普通人就不能欣赏古典音乐了?你以为你比别人都高一等吗?看你就是个伪搞古典音乐的!

  • I am Chinese in England, met her once in London Royal Festival Hall last year.

Check her website and go to her concert, sometimes she would sign autographs after the concert.

    Good luck

  • wow that was amazing!

  • Beautiful all the way around. Hilary is unbelieveable! And the orchestra was wonderful! Hilary is the best violinest playing with the best orchestra in the world!! Thanks for posting!!

  • look at her left hand, so elegant, classical beautiful, unlimited powerful! her right hand is perfect too!

  • I love Hilary Hahn!!! she is so perfect, in music, in technical, in personality!! even her beautiful face!!

  • Good god the girl has a perfect technique... Do you know how hard it is to play all those chords so cleanly?? I just read this piece for the first time today...

  • It is not difficult: just visit her website and leave a message for her! She is a real violin player.

  • Is it just me or is the orchestra really holding Hilary back. It seems she's dragging them along until around 5:12 where they finally decide to go her tempo, at least for a few measures.

I know that she takes it considerably faster in her recording. (Which in my opinion is the best.)

  • I agree. She obviously tries to go faster at the start of the movement, but they won't budge.

  • okay, but it's very hard to play for the orchestra. Hilary doesn't to listen for the others, just herself, but for example there are a lot of running themes in the cello, and they have to play it as one person... And it's in D flat which is very good, but very difficult

  • Maybe she figuered the BERLIN PHIL could handle it a little faster. ;)

  • agreed

  • Shosta n ronll

  • rock n roll

  • beautiful girl..........................

  • this part is the most hypnotizing music I've ever heard
