  • Bro, just saw the doco here in New Zealand. If only I had half the courage you have and the way in which you were so positive in each set back!!! Made me think about things, that's for sure!!! Awesome that it worked out good mate!!! If your ever in NZ, the beer is on me!!!

  • @matsnz Rock on! free beer!

  • Hey Chris! Thanks for sharing your story. I saw it yesterday in a documentairy on Dutch television. I was curious to watch it, because a neighbour of mine (female, in her twenties) has had the hiccups for a while now; not as extreme as in your video, but on a daily basis which REALLY annoys her. The doctors told her they don't have a clue as to what would trigger her hiccups. But now I saw your video, I wonder if it be best for her to have an MRI done :S. I hope you are doing fine today!

  • @GoldfairyTubes Good luck, I hope it's nothing serious.

  • Oh my god, an amazing story, sending our love from Aus! Keep on rockin man. you have a gift.

  • @ironmannichi @ironmannichi Thanks, I'm loving being hiccup free life is much better now. I did come out of the surgery with some damaged nerves so my left side isn't quite right. So I've started a project to write a song a day as a kind of self done physiotherapy. Check it out on 365songs.co.uk if you like, the songs are a bit poo sometimes but the project is really helping me get back in to music.

    Cheers.

    Chris.

  • Não sei a atual situação deste homem, mas espero, sinceramente, que ele possa superar o seu problema.

  • Hey man, saw your TV appearance on Sekai Gyouten news yesterday, Really happy that you managed to find a cure. Hope everything is going well for you now.

  • @gjwilliams1

Thank you!! if you find it online could you send me a link I would love to see it!

  • Thank you to everyone for your kind words and taking time out of your lives to offer a person in need advice and sympathy.

I am well on the road to recovery now, but without your help and people being interested in my story I may never have been diagnosed, in fact given another year I would probably have been dead, you have all been awesome and I probably owe you my life.

So cheers for the help :)

    Chris.

  • hope the op goes ok man, sure it will best surgeons in the world no worries m8

  • Aww man, I just went through 2 years of not sleeping for more than a hour at a time and I thought that was bad...talked to 7 doctors with no diagnosis but a lot of support though nothing in terms of mediation worked, trying some pretty odd strategies too. I am just really glad to hear this has come to a end for Chris and he can get on with life...good luck and stay well!!! (and I like the NHS, been good to me kept me alive a few times also, can not compliain about that now?)

  • I saw you on Japanese TV. I had no idea that you had been in Japan spending such a difficult time. I am very happy to hear about your successful surgery. May the coming year be full of happiness for you and your family.

  • I saw a TV program in Japan.

    Congratulations!!

  • How did your surgery go?

  • Why did it take the UK 2 years to give this man an MRI? Why didn't the doctors figure that it might have been something neurological or nerve-related? I think the doctors should be held accountable because the situation turned out not to be gastro but a brain tumor. I think in the US it wouldn't have gone on so long. However, now the US is going to end up having the same health care as the UK so, what of it. Too bad for this guy - I hope he gets healed somehow.

  • They should be held accountable. I met Chris quite a while ago at a party I was invited to, he's a cool, upbeat musician with a cool sense of humour and a positive outlook on life. Now, two years later they only just find a tumour? Chances are if his doctors weren't so incompetent and scanned sooner, he wouldn't be so at extra risk from the swine flu he recently contracted.

  • You seem to know nothing about the UK health system, one of the best in the world. Clearly this case is unusual, and although the cause is now obvious, initially, the main possibility considered was that it related to his digestive system. Therefore, the brain tumour was initially overlooked.

No health system's perfect, but I'm proud to come from a country where our health system caters for all and not who can pay.

DO NOT CRITICISE THE NHS TO SUPPORT YOUR DISGUSTING REPUBLICAN LIES.

  • I am in sympathy on your condition.

I hope some of the spiritual books release you from the hiccups.

"Many Lives, Many Masters", a book published in 1988.

The author: Brian L. Weiss. M.D., --- in some of his books, he explains how to do by themselves.

「霊ナアンテコワクナイヨ」 a book written in Japanese.

The author: 美輪 明宏 --- It explains about spirits and how they affect on people, and suggestions for good on readers by the author's real experiences.

  • Chris finally went through an operation on the 25th of march to allow him to keep food down and prevent heartburn, and from what he told me, it was successful which is wonderful although the hiccups persist but either way his life has improved. A man like him does not deserve hiccups in anyway, and he told me when they finally go away, he will turn everything up to 11 and jam like he has never before. Best wishes to you Chris.

  • A few years ago I had a bout of hiccups and I found myself trying to deduce what the mechanism was. I reasoned that since hiccups normally go away within minutes there couldn't be any physical damage, nothing torn or dislocated. So why do they persist as long as they do?

Tension, I supposed. What could be causing that tension? The previous hiccup? So I tried to relax, but how do you relax muscles you're only barely aware of?

    Cont...

  • Then I had a thought. When we expect discomfort we tense up. What if the tension was caused by the anticipation of the next hiccup? So I tried to stop anticipating the next hiccup. It took a while to wrap my head around it, but eventually I got it and I relaxed and never hiccupped again.

That's not really true. I did hiccup again, several times, but only once on each occasion. I have never had another bout of hiccups in what must now be four or five years.

  • This isn't a scientifically proven method, but it worked for me. The hard part is convincing yourself of something you know to be untrue.

  • I had a dream in wich it was told to me how to stop hiccup. Think suddenly in a strong way and with concentration about: "Something or someone that really hurt you". I hope this can help you an the others who have the same problem.

    Best regards

    Emma

  • poor man:(

  • Hello everyone.

I want to help Chris regarding hiccup but i dont know how to contact him or get hes email.

if you see this text comment chris do not hasitate contacting me.

I can make your hiccup dissapear for 60 seconds.

Ask Admin to giv you my email.

  • Hi. I am sure you get loads of odd or weird suggestions. Mine isn't.

Have you ever tried an Elimination or Gluten-free, dairy-free diet? So many different symptoms are triggered by food intolerances that it is not such a daft idea. The hiccups may well be a response to something that you are eating or drinking. People rarely equate what they consume with the way they feel, but believe me, it does affect us. I am on the Specific Carb Diet and it has worked for me and many others, too.

  • Hi Christopher ,

I had A similar thing few years ago , i hiccuped for 2 weeks or so , till it was 5 sec between each hiccup .

it was solved when i went to have an x-ray , and the doctor asked me to put my chest against a board of iron / metal and then it suddenly stopped ...

it was a big board , the side of covering my chest and belly , i know its exahusting , hope it would help

    MITRA

  • What do the doctors say? Can the doctors do anything?

  • Hi Chris,

Sure all the advices you have tried, but perhaps this one not.. It is the method of my old mother: put both little-fingers in both ears at the same time. (not your fore-fingers for they are too big, your little-fingers will reach your tympanic membrane)

Even when the hiccup comes let them into your ears. After a while the hiccup disappears, I hope so..!! When it works, please tell me. A lot of succes!! Christine, the Netherlands

  • Chris, if you get this, contact me, I'm a hypnotherapist and i would be glad to give you free treatment. I think you have tried it before but I have cured this condition before. this is an autonomic response and using careful but powerful techniques combining hypnosis and NLP can have good results, in hypnosis you can get someone to sweat on a cold day or numb a whole arm etc.the mind is the cure because all the autonomic systems of the body are controled by the unconscious mind.

  • someone needs to give you one hell of a fright...

  • Chris, I know you've tried this already but stay at it. Put an object on your belly and look at it (don't forget to also use your chest) Keep doing this. Don't fight the hiccup, eventually it will dissolve in your breathing.

  • Chris, it's your breathing that can help you.

Lie down, relax & concentrate! Breath in by first pushing your belly up and if you belly doesn't expand anymore breath in even more by expanding your chest. Breath out by emptying your belly and finish the cycle by emptying your chest.

If I have a hic up it always helped me (never failed)

If you like the method look for a "breathing course" meditation is all about this.

Succes and don't despair, I am pretty sure you will cure yourself.

  • Hey Chris, you should try ecstasy. This has been proven to help people with Parkinsons which manifests itself as involuntary spasms. If Im correct hiccups are an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm so maybe it could help. Ecstasy is just a drug & people take drugs every day for one thing and another. Cannabis is used to great effect by cancer sufferers to help kill the pain of the illness, so just because something is illegal doesnt mean that it's bad. Anyway, I hope you get better soon!

  • i do not advise to drink alot, even tho you somach micht need it, but doesnt help the hiccups, so its kinda a dillema i suppose, but try the horse thing, or imaige something else, the point of that is to not concentrate on the hiccups but something you find beautifull and forget the hiccups, works for me EVERYTIME, but the clue is to really see the horse and moving, and then opening and just go do your thing

  • dear chris, i read your article in the dutch newspaper, i most be hard for you , i mean if i have the hiccups for more then an half an hour it anoys me, i have the hiccups quiet often, mostly everyday after eating, what ALLWAYS helps for me is this: and seriously works for me and other friends, sounds weird but an indian tought me this once,

close your eyes and picture and really SEE a *black horse* sounds weird i know, but seriously watch the black horse in your mind, then open them and GONE

  • Hi. I just wondered if you had considered something like Yoga or Tai Chi.. they are both very much oriented towards controlling the abdomen and breathing. They can also be very gentle so needn't tire you out too much. There are many exercises on you tube etc but i would suggest trying to find a skilled practiotioner.

  • It sounds strange, but try a XTC pill.

During a party i used XTC for fun. I got hiccup, and whit the xtc pill it disappeared when i though at the hiccup. I dont know of it really works, but that time it worked for me. When i thinked about the hiccup,it disappeared.

I think its all in the head, and MDMA could change something.

Sorry for my bad language,i come from holland

  • Bloody hell! I hope the surgery helps!

  • I do not speak english.I have too this problem for several times.I try resolv this problem.I discover wich, if I to cover my torax, my throat and my nose with a cloth(can be a blanket, a hand towel, etc)and to, put this hand towel on the my nose, and Breathe in and out slowly through this hand towel, therefore, to breathe hot air slowly. This way I resolved my problem with hiccup.I have as well hiper acidic

I wouldnt advise you to drink cold water, because will to get worse your hiccup.

  • Hi Chris, I saw your story in the Daily Mail today(05/01/09) and hope your surgery goes well. Worth a try, this 'cure' has worked 100% of the times tried. Have a glass of water ready in front of you and ask someone to stand behind you and cover your ears with their hands (flat palms over hair and ears together is fine). Take a small sip of water and swallow. Wait a few secs and take another sip and swallow. Hiccups gone. Good luck. It always works for me. Regards from Lincolnshire.

  • I really really hope you find a cure for your hiccups soon, I really feel for you :(

  • Hey what happened? No comments for months.

  • it's ok, there's probably going to be a whole new wave of media coverage soon, I'm on the BBC One Show on the 2nd of September, and Wood You Believe It (ITV Show) are coming back round to do a follow up on me, the amount of help and advice people have offered is far a beyond anything I could have hoped for, I thank you all for your comments and suggestions, even though I am still inflicted with this annoying, brutal and life changing (and sometimes comedic) ailment I know people will try to help

  • I can guarantee your treatment but you will have to come to Mombasa.Kenya for treatment contact me on +254 724 110 786.You will not be dissapointed.

  • I really feel for you

i had them for 30 solid i thought that was bad enough.

    good luck

  • Try this. Stand in front of a chair, focus on a spot/area/ornament opposite you, breathe in and then sit down suddenly, still holding your breath and focussing on the same spot. It works for me ! Good luck

  • Hi Chris, I am a Registerd Nurse from Australia. I cared for a man once who had chronic hiccups like you. A doctor gave him a stat dose of 25 mg of Chlorpromazine and 20mins later the hiccups were gone. I saw this work for a second time several years later on an old lady with chronic hiccups. I think it's worth a try. All the best, Gillian Valiquette.

  • Hi Chris, I had the hiccups for 8 days straight and I figured out the cure. You must break the brain-stomach communication because an unstable oscillator effect has been set up. You can do this by freezing the stomach (or the brain or other wacky things like the americans would do). Swallow 5/6 tablespoons of ice-cream every 2 hours for 1 whole day and night. Holding your breath deprives the brain of oxygen and works only for mild hiccups. Acupuncture also doesn't work (for me),ice-cream works.

  • Sorry I'm new at this!!!! Thought the first comment didn't go thru! Many apologies!

  • hey man fill a glass with water to the very top. using your little fingers and thumbs, block your ears and nose and take 10 sips of the water without stopping. i have done this since i was a kid and it works everytime

  • Chris, you seem to have tried everything but for what it's worth: my father often used to have chronic hiccups (hiccoughs) but only for a couple of weeks at a time until someone told him it could be caused by having too much pepper on food. He eliminated pepper from his diet and the hiccoughs/hiccups disappeared. It may have been a placebo effect but it worked. Good luck.

  • Oh man, that sucks man. Ahah I know how you feel, and it's frustrating and depressing and makes you angry and yet you laugh at how ridiculous it is and you think "why me?!" Agh.. Yeah I hold my breath if I have the hiccups. 10 seconds of holding my breath. If I hiccup in the middle, I start again. I'm guessing you've tried that though...?

  • Chris, I also suffer from gastric reflux and have now been diagnosed with Barrett's oesophagus. Now this has been a serious problem particularly when I get the hiccups. My remedy for the hiccups is simply to take a deep breath (totally full you lungs, and then some more) and hold your breath for as long as is possible (release before passing out). This stretches your diaphragm much like stretching a muscle cures cramps. Now I know this may not work for you but it works every time for me.

  • i know a cure! this works every time.

Place your thumbs on the little flap in front of the ear canal (called the tragus) and press inward, closing the canal and drink a large glass of water at the same time. make sure you press your fingers in hard and try to drink the whole glass of water. (you will need someone to hold the glass for you)

this always works.. so please try it!!!

  • I've used this as a hiccup cure for a long time and it really works! It also helps if you use the air in your lungs to push against your diaphragm to prevent it spasming - it is horribly uncomfortable, but hey I guess that's the least of your worries and worth a try.

  • Dear Chris Sands,

I strongly go against your decision to take operation- the operation may not work! I am a doctor in China. I believe China's Acupuncture can cure your hiccup. Last night, in the ER room of our hospital a patient hiccuped a whole night and we can do nothing, but the chief of the Acupuncture Dept. punctured him in the morning, and the patient stop hiccup immediately. He kept the needles for 30 minutes and recovered totally. The acupuncturist told me that it's easy to treat it.

  • The operation i am having is not to cure my hiccups as most of the press seem to think, it's to cure a damaged valve at the top of my stomach which causes heartburn and vomiting i have had since i was younger, this combined with the hiccups causes me to vomit a lot and causes me extreme pain as the hiccups force acid up my tubes and into my mouth, even if i didn't have the hiccups i would still be having this operation, but i appreciate your concern and will try acupuncture soon.

  • Dear Chris,

Sorry for the misunderstanding of your operation, and glad to see you decide to try acupuncture soon. But I think you can try it before the operation since we do not know if you still hiccup during the operation. Any slight motion during the operation will bring uncertainty to the success of the operation. I believe the damaged valve have relationship with the hiccup, and maybe it disappears as the hiccup is cured. By the way acupuncture is good at curing different style of hiccups.

  • poor guy! :(

  • coitado! (what a pity)

  • just look up the person on the world record book and ask how they got rid of them

  • I may be able to help. I am a professional bodywork therapist and will offer you a free treatment. Contact me for details.

  • If he's had the hiccups this long, he might have an underlying medical problem.

  • Try this. It works quickly on normal hiccups but you will have to retrain your diaphragm into a position it has forgotten. Stand up. Relax your tummy muscles. Take a deep breath. Let out a little and hold the rest. Check your tummy muscles are relaxed. Imagine you are going to press your lungsful down through the centre of your body out the soles of your feet. Press down as long as you can. Take a few breaths, repeat. You will need to persist a while to retrain the position. Good luck
  • I have to upgrade.. Drink something cold when u are upsidedown ..

  • Get upsidedown sounds crazy but is not. Works me just fine or but some cold stuf on your chest...Drink a lot..

  • Hold your breath until it stops. Guaranteed to work. If it doesn't, you started breathing too early.

  • Have you tried eating lemon slices or drinking pure lemon juice? Works immediately, at least for "normal" hiccups. Hope it works for you too!

  • I forgot, you have to avoid all chemical pills.

  • You have to clean your all body and minds with food and clean water and avoid bad food.

  • THIS CURE WILL WORK IF YOU DO IT PROPERLY.

Press your thumbs onto each centre ear and at same time your little fingers onto each nostril to close off openings. While still pressing these four places swallow three times IN SUCCESSION. The last swallow will be hard but must be done! Good Luck

  • Just read about your story on the Ananova site. May I suggest getting really, really, out-of-your-tree, staggeringly drunk. I doubt it'll cure the hiccups, but it sounds like you deserve it!

  • Consider the pressure point at T8.

This pressure point has so far a 100% track record (with me applying the pressure on that point) for those individuals that have the occassional diaphragm spasms. (commonly called hiccups)

Although I have never applied it to a chronic sufferer, the application is simple, costs nothing and there is nothing to lose.

If you have a problem understanding T8 locale, visit a Physical Therapist or doctor familiair (preferably) with accupressure points.

  • Severe hiccups can not be cured by press T8, and I am a doctor in China and doing my internship in Acupuncture Dept.. Severe hiccups can be caused by many reasons T8 can only work for one style. If it is caused by Liver Issues, points will be different.

  • Chris

May be this sounds odd, try this.

When you have water try to drink it from the opposite side of the Glass but without rotating the Glass. I know you would say you cann't and laugh at it, but just give a try to sip the from that end where the Glass's rim raises. Look forward to hear your experience.

  • Have you tried being hypnotised? I think it might be a psychological problem, so a hypnotist might be able to help. (excuse my english if there are any mistakes:))

  • eat some strawberry yogurt... i did when i had hiccup in 3-4 days

  • Hmm... try to eat some Strawberry yogurt... i had "hicflu" 3-4 days and i ate some and woilah!
