I loved those voicings, there is the soul of jazz, like you said a drunken bar singer.. go read jazz history, it's about letting it go in the moment. And those voicings are the way he transmit music all the time. If you want the original version, go listen Joy division.
Your friend's an idiot then. I was there, I'm a jazz lecturer, and I can tell you now that he was 100% on form. Fantastic voicings. And whoever it was who reckons you can't use open 4th harmony with a song like this clearly doesn't understand, 1) jazz and, 2) the very idea of covers.
Yeah I was at this concert too! Jamie Cullum was absolutely awesome. I think he did the original justice. I love this open 4th harmonies and voicings. He truly is a great pianist and singer in his own right.
Oh good god, what the hell was he thinking? How is it possible to reduce such a great song to something no better than very poor lounge music. Wanker.
What a load of shit.

There is nothing wrong with this. He's not trying to replicate it. I think it's fine. It's not amazing. but yeah.

What a stinking pile of musical rubbish!
Expierience would have told this 'little Mr Cover version', that open 4th harmony is not the way forward with this song!
Go and work in TESCO cos we don't want to listen to this offal!

Why do everyone do boring slow renditions of LWTUA with piano and acoustic guitar? It makes the song incredibly boring.
