Sure do miss Charlie O. Actually miss Bob Goen too, he was a really good host, but never seemed to find a vehicle that fit. Wheel was good with him but so cheapened down, and by the early 90s, daytime network game shows were becoming extinct :(
This is a very good piece of TV History in terms of how the show has changed in terms of design. Also I knew they had a letter board, didnt know they still had to flip the letter (so the contestants see what letters are used)
I miss the old puzzleboard. I love how the green side of it harkens back to the "disco" look of the original set in the mid 1970s. Charlie O. was and is an awesome announcer, the only other individual still with the show from the Woolery days. Sometimes I wish they'd let Chuck come back to host for a week. I'm weird, after almost 30 years, I still think of Pat & Alex as the "new" hosts of Wheel & Jeopardy! respectively.
And guess what, This is the same year Pat Sajak joined the Family officially by hosting BOTH verisions. I think Merv showed some favoritism of the two, Vanna was his daughter and Pat was his annoying grandson..lol
I always felt Bob Goen was a superb host who got the short end of the stick so often with game shows. Wheel was bad because they went so dang cheap! I often believed he would have been a sensational host on a revised "Password", and sorry that never came to pass.
@wdm1219 I agree with you there. When GSN Radio was still running, the first time I got through to play a game over the phone, I mentioned to Bob how I thought he did a better job at Wheel than Pat is. He seemed kind of dumbfounded about it. I could hear him mumbling, "Wow, better than Sajak".
CBS is the cheapest in terms of giving money away on Game shows, at least back in the day. Now these days the price is right tries to give away as much money as possible to get ratings and they also have million dollar password. ABC and NBC have always liked to give away money.
@Wolfman12395 I heard that ABC did not want Daytime Wheel but I heard that Monopoly was considered for ABC Daytime in the late 80s. Daytime Wheel would have been a good compliment to it.
Now you see how much larger the studio is at CBS than the studio at NBC? The crew doesn't have to push the Puzzleboard to upload a puzzle, there's more space for the Showcase of prizes, and the Backdrops are not as close to the wall as the ones at NBC. So ever since the move to CBS, most of the crew had their work cut out for them.
These days they tape two shows a day. However, it could've been different back then seeing that WOF shared the same studio with The Price Is Right and the Ray Combs version of Family Feud (and other shows)
And let us not forget about the nighttime version..so since both versions taped there, they obviously had to change out some things (like the $5,000 sign in daytime to the $25,000 sign in nighttime).
cool, for once we got to see the used letter board, I guess we now know why they don't show it on air,
and Ia gree, Bob did a great job, (better than Pat IMO) it's jsut that this version was so cheap and daytime game shows were becoming a thing of the past.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I wish daytime game shows would go away, entirely, except for Jeopardy. Notice how Deal or No Deal is trying to do the Wheel of Fortune thing, themselves.
Pat stopped doing the daytime show because he was tired from doing all three shows at once. two shows at once if you tape daytime episodes one week and night episodes the next and have that rotating schedule. Pat had to drive from CBS Television City to NBC in Burbank every day. Stressful Drive Enough.
NBC Should have hired Bob Goen from the start when Pat left the Daytime show and NBC would have had Daytime Wheel until at least 1995. Long Live Wheel of Fortune!
He was a great host for sure, but the show sure was cheap in terms of cash and prizes. And that $5,000 readout, there should've been a 2 in front of the 5.
$25,000 every day for a daytime show? I don't think so. Maybe $10,000 or Create a progressive cash jackpot that starts at $5,000 and it adds $500 or 1,000 each day until it's won.
The two studios upstairs were rehearsal halls at one time. All in the Family and Carol Burnett rehearsed in them. Now Craig Ferguson tapes in one of them.
Notice that the board the contestants see for unused letters and total scores was kept by hand back in 1989; I'm sure both have since been replaced by video-board equivalents, just like the puzzles and the scoreboards the viewers see.
well, really the whole thing was a disaster. Both Wheel daytime and Pat's show tanked after Pat left, and when they moved to CBS really he should've been able to do both again, but I guess he didn't have enough time. Shame, really. Pat on CBS Wheel would've been fantastic.
Well, if Bob Barker juggled TPIR and Truth or Consequences for the first 3 years of the former, then Pat could've done the same for Wheel.
But let's think about it. Pat couldn't have done the daytime Wheel, the nighttime Wheel, AND his own talk show at the same time. He'd end up being tired, and it would eventually show.
Was Pat still doing the nighttime version at this time? I seem to remember reading somewhere that there were two versions of Wheel running at one point.
Deffinately...And by still...you believe anyone else ever hosted the nighttime version? The nighttime syndicated version started in 1983, and it still going strong with Pat and Vanna being co-hosts since the start.
I'm pretty sure Pat and Vanna were the only (and current) co-hosts of the nighttime version thought the daytime version started earlier. It's amazing that the two of them were doing both versions at one point.
Unless you count April Fools 1997, yes, they have been the only co-hosts. They did both the daytime and nighttime from 1983 (when nighttime started) until January 1989 (when Pat left daytime). Wheel daytime stuck around until 1991, but Pat and Vanna did nighttime for the whole run.
just noticed that "clack" noise the used letters board makes, you watch some epsiodes you can hear the sound in the speedup round.
