  • Thank you for the video...my only issue..and im interested to see how other photogs handle..when u move to different settings....and angles. Im doing a photo shoot..and I will be in an alley...where i probably wont get direct light...but I may turn a corner...and may get direct light....do u...take readings every time the light changes......Thanks for your time. Hank.

  • @jhank1914 zach and jody grey just did creative live using this the entire time. i highly suggest purchasing the 3 day event to learn to use this. i did, and i can't belive the results.. awesome

  • I am following all steps but my custom balance photo turns out purple

Can someone explain me why is it happening? why don't I get a normal sample photo?

  • always point to where you will be shooting...thats it ...thats all

  • You didn't point the expodisk (and camera) toward the main light. The main light was coming from over your left side. You took the exopdisk reading by pointing the camera to your right side.

  • A test against a calibrated gray card (e.g. Kodak) and the ExpoDisk would have been meaningful. As is, you have no idea whether the ExpoDisk yields correct white balance.

  • great video on this simple product, the split screen really showed how the product pulled the white balance in

  • What if you have two strobes pointing at your subjet , as if you were doing headshots???? somebody please help.

  • I have an Expo Disc myself. The way I do it is point the camera to the light source. If inside a room I point the camera to the light fixture and when outside I point the camera towards the sun. Simple. Not all light source in a room are the same so if you plan to take another picture in another room, you have to do the same thing again. The Expo Disc was a great invention. No more gray cards to deal with.

  • Thanks for the video. I think you sold me on this product. One question though. You are supposed to shoot back at the light source. What if you are in direct sun? Where do you shoot for WB? Surely not at the sun which is the light source. Thanks again, Daniel

  • @dandy

i'm not sure but here is what i understood

You shoot with the expodisc to where you are going to stand and shoot after the expodisc...

  • Thank you.

  • Looks good... read in a few places that you do indeed aim at the light source not the subject matter.

  • Very handy tutorial! You've sold me on the product and I'll certainly purchase it with confidence now. Looks very promising.

  • OK, I was on about in studio. I have used light meters. Like I'm fashion photo student.

  • Sorry you made mistake. You don't shoot where the light is, you have to shoot where the camera will be. Same as light meters.

  • Here is the text from the instruction manual:

"When photographing subjects under ambient light, it is best to stand in similar light as your subject and point the camera towards the main light source. If there is not a dominant light illuminating your subject, then it is important to capture the combined incident and refl ected light falling on your subject by pointing the camera back towards the location from where you will take the picture."

  • Have you ever used a light meter?

  • shinmuura0227,

There are different types of light meters. You may be confusing them. Incident light meters measure light that's falling on the subject by placing the meter in the general area of the subject and pointing it at the main light source. The expo disc allows your camera to in essence measure white balance using incident light.

Reflective light meters measure the light that's reflected back from the subject. This is the kind of light meter found in digital cameras for instance.

  • This is from the expodisc website.

"position or place the flash at your intended shooting position, then FROM SUBJECT POSITION aim the camera back TOWARDS SHOOTING POSITION for your custom white balance capture. Fire the flash unit remotely while taking your custom white balance capture."

  • In the case of the flash, the flash is your main light source. If you were not using flash, you aim the camera at the main light source...not necessarily the shooting position.

  • @shinmiura0227 You want to know the level of the light where your subject is, not where you place your camera.

  • @shinmiura0227 Ok I've read your post again and realize I was misunderstanding what you were saying. My apologies.

  • Great video thankyou !! Craig (UK)

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. I just purchased the expodisc and I hate reading directions. This was great! =)

  • Few people use coffee filters for poorman's way of sorting WB in tight financial days. Curious if you could do comparison in tints with the Expodisk and the so-called coffee filter. Thanks for this vid.

  • Thank you : )
