  • Thanks helping me stuff up my Ipod. The metal plate came off but it was connected to the motherboard with screws from the opposite side. There is no metal plate that comes off. So sad when you you don't give the correct information or warnings.

  • Very helpful, it worked for me. Thanks!

  • great video and easy to follow. Well done.

  • Great instructional video, thanks for posting it!

  • What a great video! Clear instructions and even a great use of music. Thanks so much.

  • Mr Wu,thank you very for the instruction and for your time..Ipod working ok...to my surpirse I manged to put all pieces back together...cheers

  • Another satisfied customer !

  • Many thanks. Used your video to bring my old iPod back to life! Great!

  • i like how this doesnt involve any saudering like the ipod nano

  • Get.,"Your',,IPOD..,Here~'~

    Copy,'"And".~Paste,".

  • Bought a mini for $10 at a garage sale. I'm changing the battery now and this will be EASY! Thanks.

  • Ignore that man behind the curtain!

  • Tip--use a hairdryer on low setting to melt the glue before attempting to remove the plastic top and bottom pieces of your Ipod mini. You will do less damage to the surface of your Ipod when trying to pry it apart that way.

  • Excellent, thanks for sharing.

    Geralldus

  • Dude, you are a lifesaver. I have never done anything like this before, but your video made it possible. Some of the pins broke off of the bottom white thingy when I put it back on, but it connects nevertheless and the Ipod is working great. Wish I could give your video more than 5 stars.

  • could you ask someone at the genius bar to do this for you?

  • Thanks for the help

  • while doing the step at 3:16 (disconnecting the connector at the bottom) I accidentally removed the whole thing completely and now the click wheel doesn't work! what do i do? how can i glue it back?'

  • Thanks! I noticed that when sliding the mobo back in, it would catch on the wheel assembly inside and go no further. I cut a piece of thick paper to the width of the mobo and slid that in first, so that the mobo would slide under the wheel assembly and the rest of the way in (once it was past the wheel assembly, I pulled the paper out).

  • That was the easiest thing I've ever done! Thanks so much for this vid! My friend actually replaced my screen a few months back the same way! I've had this iPod mini for 6+ years! Hopefully even longer!

  • I'm struggling to slide the motherboard out! Any suggestions?? Thanks

  • Best video on this topic. I drifted through many. You rock dude!

  • Thank you!

  • Thanks for the knowledge!

  • you are the best, thanks for your time.

  • Great video, straight forward and concise. Replaced my battery flawlessly for $7 off eBay with screwdrivers.

  • Entertaining and informative - thanks. Nice music selection as well. The tip of a safety pin works well to lift the edge of the end covers.

  • I'm struggling to slide the motherboard!! Any suggestions?? Thanks

  • hey you think you can help fix my ipod tell me wat to do its on my page the video i made HELP!

  • you are the bomb!!! You helped an old lady do this all on my own. Very detailed and great pace so I could go along. thanks again. ps...you have a very effective, calm tutorial voice.

  • can u not charge it

  • One of my two screws would turn, but wouldn't come out. Eventually I stripped it. I took a hammer, pounded in the screwdriver fairly hard, and was able to get the second screw out. Whew!

  • @helix400 I'm having the same problem. how did you pound it with the hammer?

  • Thanks for posting this! I bought a replacement battery eons ago and never installed it, but since I'd rather take my old ipod to the gym I decided to try it. THe battery I had came with both screwdrivers, and it was easy to follow along with you - works perfect.

  • lol...

    iPod mini!

I got iPad and iPhone 3Gs

  • thanks hun --didn't have a clue how to do it until i watched this xx so thank you x

  • Duuuude - that was sweet. Thanks mucho, Dominic.

  • great walk-trough but you make want the click the hold switch on so that the ipod does not come on whilst doing this procedure

  • does any one have a site to get the battery?

  • This was really helpful. One item to note - my iPod mini motherboard did not slide out as easily as in the video. I couldn't figure out why. I connected my iPod USB cable to the mini to push the motherboard since I didn't want to damage female receptor. The problem was that the lithium battery was "bulging." I had the same bulging problem on my wife's macbook. (Google "macbook bulging battery"). Have only encountered this "bulging issue" in Apple products.

  • Great guide awsome narration step by step well done best video 5 stars no problems at all just be carful with the hold botton is very fragil but the guide is very good and easy to follow 5 STARS!!!!

  • thanks worked great. WARNING! there is a tiny plastic tab where the hold button is and it is very easily broken off. The ipod will still work fine but the the HOLD option is no longer available.

  • Cheers mate. Just the job.

  • nice1 worked a treat

  • sweet looks like with all the mini's ive gone through i can replace the batteries and sell them on ebay WOOP WOOP!!!

  • i have a question....what kind of thin tool did you use??? What was it called?

Because i am trying to replace my battery without damaging mine with a thick tool.

  • Great informative video!!! My Hubby just replaced my mini battery and Got her charging. Check Ebay for batteries. Thats where I got mine and pretty cheap too.

  • an excellent guide! my one friend's ipod mini broke, so i'm considering fixing it for 'em, so this guide will be of extreme help. THANKS!

  • where can you buy the battery?

  • Thank you! I just did it and am very happy with the results.

  • what happens if it won't use the dial

  • just did it, easy as pie, thanks for the video!

  • are those really your hands? looks like you havent done a hard days work in your life!

  • Is that all you care about?

  • erm, no. It was just a silly comment

  • This video was so easy to follow and awesomely useful that I created a youtube account just to rate it 5 stars! Oh and leave this comment as well.

  • wow, this video WORKS! I played it while I was changing my ipod mini battery ( although I had to pause it often because it was going to quickly) and now my ipod mini is charging with a few battle scars on the top and bottom of the plastic cover things.

  • thanks for taking the time to put this out there.

as soon as i'm up for it, which will be soon, i'll try it on mine.

your instructions are a nice adjunct to the sorta scary instructions that come with the battery. so again, thanks

  • Thank you. I used this video to replace a battery in my old ipod mini. I like DIY videos that assume i'm an idiot... very well done.

  • I just did it! it worked fine. Thanks! the music it's kind of stressing though.. trying to put it inside again with that music.. almost go mad...

  • how much is a new battery and how many hours does it last?

i have a mini and now the battery lasts for like 1:30 - 2:00 hours. Do you think it worth it to change it?

  • on deal extreme u can get one for $5.00. ya five dollars

  • Guitar pic works good to pry open.

  • Thanks so much! Great instructions and the perfect amount of detail. Great job :)

  • 3-Hours? You should do it for 12 to 24 Hours otherwise the Battery can Develop what's known as a Memory....Which means that it wont Charge all the way to the battery's capacity & it wont last as long as possible

  • ipod minis are the best!!! mines now 8GB!! nice vid!!

  • thanx 4 that. was easy with your instructions :-)

  • Very practical. Worked! Thanks.

  • DONE! thanks man, bought the b attery off eBay... should have done this like a year ago

  • nice one, had a bitch of a time getting it back into the case but got there in the end, clear instructions, very good, cheers

  • thankss just replaced my battery (:

got a lot of sand over my laptop though. didn't realize how much sand was in my ipod.

    thanks agen!! xo

  • Hey Dominic. Great video!

Do you or anyone know of what to do with the old battery once it has been removed? Can you recycle the battery with regular battery recycling program or thru Apple's iPod recycling program?

  • Throw it in the garbage, Captain Planet (algore) will never know.

  • wow that thing is huge!

  • Thank Dominic. You simplified the replacement on my Ipod mini. Wu wu, put your hands wu wu

  • Thank you! Very helpful. Great video editing BTW!

  • Thanks for the video, just replaced my battery =]

  • You have thickest ipod, any way thanks for shearing.........nice information.

  • Do you know where to buy a ipod mini battery? :o pleaes and thanyou

  • Hi there - you can probably buy one at a computer mall some where. If you don't have one around you, ebay is a great place to search!

  • Haha thanks for the extra fast response :D

    I'll check on it :P

  • i got mine from ebay for like 6 bucks comes with screw drivers too =p

  • @d8dragonx Me too! I managed to do it in 15 minutes. Great video!

  • @AznGunGrave get one from ebay

  • iphone 3g so can?

  • Wow... I followed along in (virtual) real-time to your video, and had the battery replaced in about 10 minutes. Powered right up, and everything works great. Charging it overnight now. Thanks!!!

  • Thanks

  • Before prying up the top and bottom covers, heat them up with a hair dryer. They come off a lot easier!

  • i was about to say that!

  • Good vid - but please get rid of the irritating music.

  • you homo!

  • thanks for this video. I bought my battery on eBay from Hong Kong for $1 plus $4 shipping and handling, and it came with the tools. I was able to follow your easy steps and do this in about 10 minutes.

  • Awesome!!! Just did it in like 20 minutes-- thanks Dom!

  • Whoo yoo I did it, thanks. Even though the mini is very old I can pass it down to the next child now

  • whats the name of this song?

  • awesome i did this while watching 5/5 bro. really helped

  • i'm feeling naughty at the moment o

  • great vid...had it on while I was replacing mine and all went a-ok. Don't think I could have done it on my own! Thanks a million !!

  • how much and where did you get your battery?

  • nice vid, but wont it harm your ipod mini somehow?

its the only ipod/mp3 player i got.

  • Well.. after fixing mine in this video, it survived. Like, my ipod is going strong right now. It surpassed the lifespan of my ipod nano (first gen) and is still going strong.

I can't guarantee you it doesn't harm your ipod mini.. if you really want to make sure it doesn't, I guess - bring it into applecare? My issue was that it was past the warranty period + why pay so much for a service I could do myself? :)

    hope this helps.

  • yeah it helps alot. by the way, what that jazz song called in the backround?

  • i just did it to and i think it only hurts your ipod if your a mongoloid with it. there wasnt anything in the process that an actual human couldnt avoid hurting

  • sweet shall be doing mine next week :)

  • whaha i knew this like since i bought the crap xDDD

  • Great video! Well narrated and easy to follow.

  • good news:replaced my battery

bad news: click wheel doesnt work

how the fuck do you fix this shit???

  • When removing the plastic ends on the iPod, you can heat it up with a hair dryer to weaken the glue. Makes it a whole lot easier.

  • nice instruction movie, this will help al lot of people.

    hein

  • This worked great :)

Thanks alot, I'm soo happy to have my iPod mini back in business :D

  • genuousss!!!!!!

  • Thanks. This worked great.

  • hey man nice job! love the music

  • GreAT VID .....ty

  • Thanks for posting bro! Really helped a lot.

  • Followed the exact instructions but my click wheel doesn't work!! Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Take the ipod apart, whilst sliding it back in make sure nothing is touching the click wheel workings inside.

It's a sensitive thing - mine now works if i apply a sideways movement / pressure to it - try this.

    hope this helps.

  • Thanks a lot!

  • ugh i`ve tried what you suggested but it still wont work =[ OMG WHY ME!! LOL anymore suggestions?

  • hmm.. did you remember to reconnect the wire when you inserted the thing back into the case? You might want to make sure the connection is secure?

  • so the white covers were glued... I was expecting something more solid from a professional company Apple claims to be...

  • LOL....

  • OH DOMINIC!

This is going in my favorites.

    -HB

  • yayyy... finally a new battery... thank you so much! your video was the perfect manual to replace it!

    -Fully informative

    -Good sound and Video quality

This video was very easy to follow: *****!

  • Thank you so much! The instructions were not the best from iPod Depot. wee! I did it!

  • OMG. thanks SooOOOOOOooooo much, i did it and it WORKSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Where did you get that tiny philips screw driver?

    !!! PLEASE REPLY !!!

  • hey - i got my screw driver at a computer mall in HKG. I'm sure you can get it at a similar store, or perhaps at a store that sells glasses? (the screw drivers used to fix glasses work for the ipod screws too). hope this helps.

  • Thanks, now I can finish replacing it then sell the thing on Ebay. L[]L

  • thank you, man. didn't think i could do it - but no problem with this great video. although i left some scratches while opening the top, but whatever...

  • graet music, great tutorial. The narration is awesome too.

  • thanks for this mate, i dont know why the other tute has more hits, it doesnt even have any narration. You made it too easy ;)

  • Hey, watch the screen at the 5:08 mark, LOL, but thanks alot. i just bought mine from a friend for $25 and now all i have to do is replace this battery and i am off.

But thanks so much. screw Apple- $99 plus 6.45 for shipping of $30 for a battery installed buy yourself which you no is done correct- i think - LOL--__-- well thank a million.

  • Thanks, this was super-helpful! Still nerve-wracking but pretty easy. My iPod mini thanks you. ;)

  • THANKS A LOT!!!

It really was very very useful

  • thank you for this tutorial,it helped me big time!still it took the two of us,and some thinking, and a big load of patience, but it payed off!i am currently draining my brand new battery:)

    notes:

1.)we had a hard time getting off the bottom metal clip, especially around the Molex (or whatever) connector.watch it,i think we damaged it a bit,but it works!

2.)the new battery did not exactly fit,we had to apply a bit of force to get it in position p.s. thanks again!

  • OMFG i just took my old broken ipod nano ripped the battery out and then used this tutorial to take that batter and sodder it to the ipod mini and it worked!!! Just one fucking problem i ripped the plastic input for the clickwheel on the bottom of the mother board and now i wasted all that time for nothing LMAO

  • lol i charged my ipod all night and when i just turned it on 4 seconds into my song it said the recharge batery thing. where do u buy a battery?? and how much time is 700 mAH

  • Excellent tutorial - thank you ... Just replaced a friend's mini battery and although it is way fiddly it's not too difficult. One thing I'd say is make sure the replacement you buy is 100% compatible as the one I got was slightly larger than the original but with a bit of lip biting and gentle force I got it back together. Another suggestion is using the hairdryer method (as seen on other videos) to loosen up the glue before prying the top and bottom plastic casing off. Thanks again

  • Just changed my battery! thanks for the video. All went ok. Was a bit tricky to slide in and out of the shell. I had to use a screwdriver to lift the clickwheel out of the way more when sliding the internals back in. Your video was a great help! thanks.

  • Can you tell me what were the specs of the battery you bought for your ipod mini. And also were did you buy it. Ebay?? Thanks

  • I believe mine was 700mAH. the higher the mAH, the longer the battery life! keep that in mind. I bought it on Ebay for only 10 bucks (battery + shipping).

    hope this helps.

  • When I tried it, the clickwheel doesn't work. HELP!

  • did you reconnect the plug that you plugged out in the first couple of steps before removing the mother board? that connects the clickwheel to the motherboard. check if that plug is loose - that should do the trick. hopefully you didn't pull on the plug too hard to break the wires.. *fingers crossed!*

    good luck!

  • I didn't remember ever seeing that wire.

  • it's the wire around 03:13 in the video - a lot of ppl forget about the existence of that wire and accidentally rip it out - hopefully u didn't! Cz if u didn't then u cud just simply plug it back in and it'll be fine. good luck!

  • No, I mean I don't remember seeing the wire on my iPod.

  • Thanks! - Mine is back up and running but I went ahead and bought the Sansa too.

  • Thank you. That is one of the most detailed and high quality "how to's" I've seen on youtube. I'm getting a new battery for X-mas. My current one lasts about 20 min. lol.

  • thank you!!!

  • i have an insignia ns-dv and theres a cover on the back that pops right off. fuck ipod

  • Oh, how I wish I would have bought one of the mp3 players at Best Buy back in the day. They were better engineered and half the price. But I had to be cool and get an Apple. ;( Oh well.

  • does the new battery has to be changed later? or is it permanent?

  • it is permanent. just like your original ipod battery. it can be recharged.

  • Thanks for the video! Worked great for me.

  • Xcellent! made this a breeze!

  • my iPod mini needs a battery replacement but i'm just going to buy the new ipod touch. you get a 10% discount for trading in old ipods

  • Thanks for the video man! Worked great!

  • i take the shit off put i cant slide the main part outside of the case its a sturggle n i dont wanna brake it

  • I bought the battery, but my ipod doesn't slide... Damm it... I'm going to risk it all, and push harder!!! (if this thing breaks, i'll warn you :p)

  • Bought the Battery for $12.00 on EBay and you Just saved me $100.00. great instructions and clear video.

  • i have changed the battery and can see the screen working but i cant seem to get the click wheel or the play/pause to work, should i be able to use the ipod properly before all the ends are put back on?

  • this might be because you forgot to re-plug in the thing on the bottom of the ipod. this connects the clickwheel back to the mother board.

  • Oh no, i did do that. Then i unplugged it again and reconnected it just to make sure that it was in ok. However, on the second unplug, the connector broke off. I guess the soldering broke? No hope for me now is there :(

  • yikes.. i think u mightve broke some of the connections when u unplugged it the first time-which wud possibly explain y the clickwheel wasnt working when u reconnected it.. any techies out there who can help elliemay40??

  • hey thank you SO MUCH i went to the ipod store and they JACK ASS'S thank you so much for your help it saved me 80 bucks

  • How can you know that you have a battery problem instead of hardisk problem

    Thanks,

    M

  • I'm not an expert at this, but I do believe that a hard disk problem would show itself with many other clues such as battery runs out JUST as you turn it on, but you can still turn it back on, possibly indicating that the battery is not channeling its power well to the hard disk.. I knew my problem was a battery problem because everything else was working fine, but my iPod would run out of battery in like 1 hour.

  • I like the music

  • Great vid :-)

  • thanks :) i was just experimenting haha

  • hahahha i love you :D

and stop hurting ur ipod lol
