  • Best way to spend 6 mins and some secs. I love this song!!!

  • Great song, but there's more than a hint of Van Morrison's Sweet Thing in this song.

  • I heared it yesterday. I'm 24 years old and I don't know how I could live last 23 years without knowing this song. Absolutely amazing. Extremely touching.

  • These are the most primal and at the same time, contemporary lyrics to describe a timeless circumstance in the human psyche 1973 or not (!) and I am so grateful for Mike's lyrics and the divine fiddle! May blessings rain on each and every one of you living or dead. Thank you! Love you.

  • Music and sound in the '80s by Mike perfect!

  • I am so happy to see other people who have had great times with The Waterboys. I went to see a Waterboys concert in high school-1988?-and I met Mike. He was the most kind, nonassuming and unpretentious man I had ever met. What a beautiful soul.. and Steve is my fav fiddler, ever, I can only aspire to play as he does.

Joe-I hope your journey is still in the light.

    Daniel-I think you are right!!!

    get well soon

  • So many of us songwriters are waiting and aching to learn all the most amazingly difficult chords to play so that we can play/write a really really GREAT song. One that just pours out of us. But "This Is The Sea" is definitive proof that all that is needed is two simple chords the right SPIRIT. May God Almighty bless our simplicity, our majestically ordained ordinariness and pour out his heart into our spirits. May we write tunes like this. May we laugh uncontrollably while we do it. alex

  • most emotional song I've ever heard.... Amazing:-).

Great things last forever..........................pop music die a horrible death please. If you have never seen the waterboys play in Ireland you have never seen the waterboys play full stop I'm afraid !!

  • Really a GREAT MUSIC! Greetings from Poland.

  • this song will be played at my uncles funeral :(

its a great song and will stay in my heart forever :(:(

  • @ joekaz - I sincerely congratulate you on working thru ridding yourself of some of the demons. I put all that stuff down almost 20 years ago. It was the best investment I made. An investment in myself and my much-richer life now than I could ever have imagined. It's songs like these that keep us going, remind us of where we've been...and bring us hope for tomorrow. Blessings to you in your journey.

  • zeitloser großartiger song.......

    .....da werden errinnerungen wach ........

was würde ich dafür geben, wenn ich nach 1985 zurückkehren könnte.....*seufz*

  • This may the most beautiful rock song ever written. If I had a country, I'd make this our anthem :)

  • Respond to this video...too much rowdy shite these days, nice to sit in ya garden and really enjoy some quality.

  • One of the ten best albums in rock history!

  • Wow...

  • WE GET REALLY REALLY OLD beentheredumpedthat AND WHATS THE PROBLEM, I LIKE TO LOOK BACK FROM TIME TO TIME, THATS ONE REASON WHY I LIKE TO LISTEN TO THESE SONGS............

  • thanks

  • Thank you for posting this. I find it funny that when the video is a little warped, I get this quick need to run to my VCR just in case something goes wrong. And then I remember ... I'm really, really, old.

  • It's good though.

  • what a beautiful song... love the Waterboys

  • love love love this song!

  • gotta love them.

  • i personnaly believe mike scott to be the most underrated song writer ever

  • @DANIELHEWITT1 : It's true. When's the last time you heard him raise in casual conversation, like Bono or Elvis Costello? (And I mean outside of some obscure Welsh after-party.) But he has carried me more than once the last year.

  • @DANIELHEWITT1 there is certainly some truth to that - for sure.

  • @DANIELHEWITT1 yesss! I agree! his lyrics are dead on meaningful.

  • thank you for posting parkhill62,memories,memories,great song, powerful lyrics, mike scott is one of the best songwriters ever.

  • THIS IS THE SEA,hands down the best album ever!

  • I really like this song. How old is it?

  • Wow what a voice - shame it didnt last -dont get me wrong I still love the Waterboys - but that voice is not the same

  • good luck with your struggle joe !!!....

  • this takes me back, love this track

  • If Mick Jagger was handsome, he'd look like Mike Scott...:)

  • I want to say that I'm going through a life crisis, shedding myself of drugs. Had to quit my job, no insurance, but, in a beautiful way, enjoying the struggle.

This song, has always been nestled up with "Like a Rolling Stone" as one of the all-time bests. Amazing, transformative - lovely. Both are empowering.

peace to all of my (waterboys people)

    joe

  • good luck joe.

to me, this is a perfect example of the transformative power of music and poetry. and i think we sometimes overlook that mike scott has a great voice.

  • Hang in there Joe..you can get back to yourself again.

  • @joekaz This really is a beautiful song. I always associate it with growing up on the inside, not just the out side. Not an easy thing to do. Apparently the Chinese symbol for crisis can mean "opportunity" in a time of "danger". Peace and Best wishes to you

  • @joekaz Good Luck Joe!

  • @joekaz ,

Once you were tethered,..now you are free

  • @joekaz Mike Scotts' music is as poinent and moving now, as it was back when I first discovered it. Seems many people are transported by his music, back to a particular place in time. I'm working through my own issues right now but I hope you came through that stuggle ok joe?

  • @MURFSWORLD You are so right! I am not a very nostalgic person, but this music literally takes me right back to how I felt the first time I heard it. It is a very strong and moving feeling.

  • @joekaz Like in Poker, some rivers may turn into a Sea! Godspeed! =)

  • One of the most powerful songs ever.

    To me it is Earth-Heaven..............

First heard it in Riding Giants and became an instant Waterboys fan.

  • waterboys come to greece thessaloniki

  • I want this played at my funeral...

  • perfect, i want this son played at my funeral

  • Beautiful.

  • most of the waterboys songs are well composed .thank u for the waterboys ..

  • at various moments in your life you will think "that was the river, this is the sea".

a non-poetic one from me was when i was canyoning in south africa - and where the river joined the sea, a boat had to come out and tow us to safety, because the water was much colder and the current was fierce. it was an incredible experience. where the river became the sea was a wall of breakers, about 2 storeys high.

  • beautiful!

    once you were tethered

    now you are free

    nothing more to say...x

  • In the 9th Century Ireland was known as Scotland, check it up. I learnt that from Bertrand Russell in his book, A history of Western Philosophy.

  • the best from carlos

  • The 1980's: when bass players thought 10" speakers gave them a license to ruin music, still manages to transcend though.

  • wow! that's a pretty well detailled point ... I was more concerned about the video glitch at about 4:46 into it ???

it is a nice tune and a cool band though, you're right.

    all the best

    G

  • My comment is not entirely fair in that the bassist is an excellent player and is in tune. But that kind of bass playing really dates the song, which some may not think is a bad thing. Cheers

  • sdjcinw The river is the world..the surface mind,i.e emotions and thoughts, the sea however is....well i'll leave that to you to find out...bliss deep peace are in the sea though, the here and NOW!

  • the river is when you were young

the sea is the grown' up world

the river flows into the sea

  • Without doubt the greatest modern day poet, god bless you Mike Scott.

This album still sends shivers down my spine 25 years on.

  • Theres a movie called "This is the sea" with Samantha Morton about The Struggles and The Waterboys did the soundtrack....brilliant!!!

Makes you proud to be Irish!

  • Yay ! Always feel good abt bein Irish ! But Mike´s a Scotsman ...

  • I love how some of the lyrics are changed for this performance.

BRILLIANT song, thanks a ton for posting this.

  • great to see the lineup here - with Steve Wickham on violin, Anto Thistlethwait on Sax and Karl Wallinger on the keyboard, - I saw them on the tour of Fishermans Blues and they were great, saw them last year and Mike and Steve still have it, although I would love to see the original members back together! One day perhaps.

  • Karl wallinger wouldn't have been on the Fishermans Blues tour, didn't he go start his own band World Party not long after This is the Sea was released.

  • @okee9 Wallinger barely toured This Is The Sea. Just a few preliminary festival dates. Roddy Frame from Aztec Camera filled in on several occasions. God I LOVE The Waterboys!!

  • That was VHS and now it's DVD! nice to watch em again anyway.

  • yeah mine to

  • This is the first time I heard this song...why have I not heard this before! great tune

  • awesome, great music.

  • a ken it wisnae their song but does anybody else get SWEET THING fae the fish blues album? its ma FAV FOREVER!!!!

  • it is absolutely a 6/8 but a lil bit unsystematic

  • This might sound like a bit of geeky question but what timing is this in? does it switch between or 6/8 and 4/4 or are there just a lot of triplets? Love the waterboys - always pushing their own boundaries :)

  • Good question. It sounds like it could be a slow 6/8. the snare drum is hitting quaver 4.

4/4 is plausible, but the quavers in the instruments would indicate a compound time.

  • My all time favourite song... since 1985. My first CD. Always with me when I go down... pumping me up. :-)

  • Wow, how come I didn't see this before...thanks soo much for posting...pity that the quality is breaking up...hold on to that original

True pan spirit.... Didn't realize Steve Wickham was around so early...or is it later than I think...?

Calling all WB afficionados to inform!

  • my fav song by them, always brings a smile n shivers down my spine

  • Mike Scott is a genius

  • I keep comming back to this. nothing else like this out there!!

  • Wonderful. Listen to The whole of the Moon. Also a great song. Love it

  • Thank you for posting this! A,azing performance and a terrific song! Miss you a lot!

  • Wonderful! Mike, superb, great song and concert...

    Many thanks!

  • This is really beautiful. Thanks so much for posting it.

  • Scott is an egomaniac who assembled some awesome talent.(i.e. Wallinger). He is really just another big hair 80's guy.

  • So why don't you just keep listening to Paul Potts?

  • be wellcome, all egomaniacs like this one

  • the best band that this country has ever produced, the lyrics, music, production, passion, spiritually the best.

  • hey, you stole my comment!!!!

  • thats good great minds think alike.

  • That was the river i.e time .This is the sea i.e Now.Time isn't real Now is real.Time causes all sorts of emotional pain .Now causes bliss peace happiness etc.Now is depthless infinitly deep Time is linear.Body and death one illusion.Don't agree?Wake up and find out!!!!!

  • Everything in your life leading up to this point in time.....that was the river. Now at this moment, endless possibilities spread before you.....behold the sea!

    live long and prosper

    cygnus

  • Brilliant and powerful song. This is true art from God and we all have our own interpretation of it.

  • This is the Sea - which is a metaphor for This is real Life - get used to it - grow up big time - it's not 1973 it's what being an adult is all about - and it is time to take your place in the world as an Adult !!!!!

  • Yes, I think this is the real meaning.

  • mantra3000 - Thanks for that. All songs are open to personal interpretation - thats just my take on it - glad you agree.

  • the waterboys is mike scott....he just has great musicians on board but he is essentially the waterboys x

  • ya fuckin boss so fuckin under rated

  • to all u waterpeople, how good were they!
