I heared it yesterday. I'm 24 years old and I don't know how I could live last 23 years without knowing this song. Absolutely amazing. Extremely touching.
hey annemarieannemarie down a few lines?? what a coincedence we got the same first name...but the differance is..I am a Waterboys fan! you hate this? U deaf? anywho....this is the see? capiesche? comprendo? and to think...my name Annemarie mean's gracious rebel! I rebel against people who hate this sound! ciao
These are the most primal and at the same time, contemporary lyrics to describe a timeless circumstance in the human psyche 1973 or not (!) and I am so grateful for Mike's lyrics and the divine fiddle! May blessings rain on each and every one of you living or dead. Thank you! Love you.
Great song tho Whole of the moon was, this is the one that floats my boat more than any other. Saw them live when they supported Simple minds at Ibrox and have loved this ever since. Anyone wonder how they would do on X factor???
Does anyone have a better copy of this ... had one, not available anymore ... thanks for the post,anyway... great .... would love to have a copy without blirps, and that doesn't cut off the last "Behold the sea" .....
This song has primal underpinnings that speak to the power the nature, the human spirit,...the glory of life.....i love this music....for me its a spiritual piece that celbrattes life......paddling our in winter surf, just a long run on a cold morning....rowing......this music makes me very thankful for these very soulful musicians and thier art....inspired work ....it all fits for me ..it should be on every thinking mans IPOD.
i loved it when it came out. reminded me of myself- the song was very poignant. that aside a brilliant piece. i still enjoy it as much now being a grandad as i did then.......
I'm in bliss...again and again. Mike and the waterboys were my soundtrack generation...lost in the northweast of Brazil...too far from anyone or anything...just a few can imagine what life means here... Mike is God! Tnks Mike... My life is not so miserable... or in vain
I am so happy to see other people who have had great times with The Waterboys. I went to see a Waterboys concert in high school-1988?-and I met Mike. He was the most kind, nonassuming and unpretentious man I had ever met. What a beautiful soul.. and Steve is my fav fiddler, ever, I can only aspire to play as he does.
So many of us songwriters are waiting and aching to learn all the most amazingly difficult chords to play so that we can play/write a really really GREAT song. One that just pours out of us. But "This Is The Sea" is definitive proof that all that is needed is two simple chords the right SPIRIT. May God Almighty bless our simplicity, our majestically ordained ordinariness and pour out his heart into our spirits. May we write tunes like this. May we laugh uncontrollably while we do it. alex
i agree with danielhewitt1, u never here of mike scott anywhere , he is the most inspirational and pasionate singer songwriter that i know of, i'm 4rm d west of eire living in oz , listening 2 songs like this rises the gaelic blood and gives u strength, gud shit mate, keep d flag flying brother
Mike Scott honorary Irish man, living on the Irish west coast inspired by the Ocean, he inspires me, and I'm going to see the waterboys play this summer at a music boutique festival in the Irish midlands.......I can't wait !
Great things last forever..........................pop music die a horrible death please. If you have never seen the waterboys play in Ireland you have never seen the waterboys play full stop I'm afraid !!
@ joekaz - I sincerely congratulate you on working thru ridding yourself of some of the demons. I put all that stuff down almost 20 years ago. It was the best investment I made. An investment in myself and my much-richer life now than I could ever have imagined. It's songs like these that keep us going, remind us of where we've been...and bring us hope for tomorrow. Blessings to you in your journey.
WE GET REALLY REALLY OLD beentheredumpedthat AND WHATS THE PROBLEM, I LIKE TO LOOK BACK FROM TIME TO TIME, THATS ONE REASON WHY I LIKE TO LISTEN TO THESE SONGS............
Thank you for posting this. I find it funny that when the video is a little warped, I get this quick need to run to my VCR just in case something goes wrong. And then I remember ... I'm really, really, old.
@DANIELHEWITT1 : It's true. When's the last time you heard him raise in casual conversation, like Bono or Elvis Costello? (And I mean outside of some obscure Welsh after-party.) But he has carried me more than once the last year.
I want to say that I'm going through a life crisis, shedding myself of drugs. Had to quit my job, no insurance, but, in a beautiful way, enjoying the struggle.
This song, has always been nestled up with "Like a Rolling Stone" as one of the all-time bests. Amazing, transformative - lovely. Both are empowering.
to me, this is a perfect example of the transformative power of music and poetry. and i think we sometimes overlook that mike scott has a great voice.
@joekaz This really is a beautiful song. I always associate it with growing up on the inside, not just the out side. Not an easy thing to do. Apparently the Chinese symbol for crisis can mean "opportunity" in a time of "danger". Peace and Best wishes to you
@joekaz Mike Scotts' music is as poinent and moving now, as it was back when I first discovered it. Seems many people are transported by his music, back to a particular place in time. I'm working through my own issues right now but I hope you came through that stuggle ok joe?
@MURFSWORLD You are so right! I am not a very nostalgic person, but this music literally takes me right back to how I felt the first time I heard it. It is a very strong and moving feeling.
at various moments in your life you will think "that was the river, this is the sea".
a non-poetic one from me was when i was canyoning in south africa - and where the river joined the sea, a boat had to come out and tow us to safety, because the water was much colder and the current was fierce. it was an incredible experience. where the river became the sea was a wall of breakers, about 2 storeys high.
My comment is not entirely fair in that the bassist is an excellent player and is in tune. But that kind of bass playing really dates the song, which some may not think is a bad thing. Cheers
sdjcinw The river is the world..the surface mind,i.e emotions and thoughts, the sea however is....well i'll leave that to you to find out...bliss deep peace are in the sea though, the here and NOW!
great to see the lineup here - with Steve Wickham on violin, Anto Thistlethwait on Sax and Karl Wallinger on the keyboard, - I saw them on the tour of Fishermans Blues and they were great, saw them last year and Mike and Steve still have it, although I would love to see the original members back together! One day perhaps.
Karl wallinger wouldn't have been on the Fishermans Blues tour, didn't he go start his own band World Party not long after This is the Sea was released.
@okee9 Wallinger barely toured This Is The Sea. Just a few preliminary festival dates. Roddy Frame from Aztec Camera filled in on several occasions. God I LOVE The Waterboys!!
This might sound like a bit of geeky question but what timing is this in? does it switch between or 6/8 and 4/4 or are there just a lot of triplets? Love the waterboys - always pushing their own boundaries :)
That was the river i.e time .This is the sea i.e Now.Time isn't real Now is real.Time causes all sorts of emotional pain .Now causes bliss peace happiness etc.Now is depthless infinitly deep Time is linear.Body and death one illusion.Don't agree?Wake up and find out!!!!!
Everything in your life leading up to this point in time.....that was the river. Now at this moment, endless possibilities spread before you.....behold the sea!
This is the Sea - which is a metaphor for This is real Life - get used to it - grow up big time - it's not 1973 it's what being an adult is all about - and it is time to take your place in the world as an Adult !!!!!
Welcome then to the wonderful world of Mike Scott and the Waterboys. Check out albums Pagan Place and This is the Sea for music excellence. Try also band World Party, led by Karl Wallinger, who features in this video!
Best way to spend 6 mins and some secs. I love this song!!!

Good question. It sounds like it could be a slow 6/8. the snare drum is hitting quaver 4.
4/4 is plausible, but the quavers in the instruments would indicate a compound time.

This is the Sea - which is a metaphor for This is real Life - get used to it - grow up big time - it's not 1973 it's what being an adult is all about - and it is time to take your place in the world as an Adult !!!!!
