@Iwasfreeonce no, not magnetic, but geographic, as prooved our smartphone GPS . there was no cellphone network but the GPS still works up there and it showed precisely latitude N 90.0000 . Photo visible on klipsi. com
@KlipsiGeneva well to be perfectly precise, we arrived at precisely N 90.0000 a few hours earlier, then halted, and went down on the ice a few hours later. In the few hours that passed, the ice shifts constantly over the sea flows, thus you are no more precisely at N 90.0000 if you do not navigate constantly in the ice to stay put . Therefore we were 'almost' at the North Pole when we walked on the ice. or maybe by coincidence we drifted in circles and back to N 90.0000 ? hahahaha
IF I WAS THERE I WOULD KICK THE SHITOUT OF EVERYONE JUST FOR BEING FUKIN MORONS, AND THIS DILDO WITH THE CAMERA I WOULD SHOVE IT UP HIS ASS SINCE HE LIKES RECORDING SHIT, AND THAT GOSHDAMN FUKIN TAI-CHI FAG, OMG I WISH I COULD GET MY HANDS AROUND HIS SCRONNY NECK, WHAT A FAG WHO THE FUK DOES GOSHDAMN TAI-CHI AT THE NORTH POLE? HEY HONEY I CANT WAIT TO GET TO THE NORTH POLE SO I CAN DO MY TAI-CHI, THAT TAI-CHI FAG WOULD COME UP MISSING REAL FAST BELIEVE THAT
well then I'd say we were lucky you weren't THERE... and if you were, better not kick the s... out of EVERYone cause that would include the captain of the nuclear icebreaker...and you would be f...d.... hey seriously, you need to go see an anger management organization.... or maybe just basic kindergarten , who knows.... Merry Xmas to you.
OK, so he's Swiss, but doesn't he sound just like a fat, arrogant, rich, camera festooned German. Why is it always the most unworthy, unappealing people who can afford such trips.

@leitros I'm not rich. I was lucky, paid for much of the trip on a photo shoot. Stil paying back credit card for the balance. But what the heck, a trip to the north pole...
OK, so he's Swiss, but doesn't he sound just like a fat, arrogant, rich, camera festooned German. Why is it always the most unworthy, unappealing people who can afford such trips.
@dadsoldtapes It was just barely below 0 degrees, if I remember well it was -1 °C or so. But the "nice weather" was that it was cloud-free, no fog, no stratus, sunny, and relatively "mild"... and no wind ! indeed our expedition leader told us he had been 14 times at the North Pole , always in the arctic summer ( late june to early August) , and it was almost always cloudy or foggy or both...only once was it sunny but with strong wind. So we were really really lucky to have sunny without wind
@KlipsiGeneva 0 degrees is about the average mid-summer temperature at the Pole... it's relatively mild compared to the South Pole, which gets to maybe as warm as -20 in December (continental climate, high-elevation). Do you know by the GPS on the ship how far it would drift in say like an hour of being there?
@dadsoldtapes sorry no, I don't know precisely, though I have a vague souvenir that they probably told us... if I had to do a wild guess, I would say in one hour we may drift a mile or so ? But it may be totally wrong, may be more, or much less ? also, I would presume the drifting speed is not constant, not always the same, as I presume those drifting currents are variable, too. here is a photo I took of the GPS on a friend's Nokia showing N 90.0000 (my own Nokia stuck at 89.9999 )
@dadsoldtapes look also this video , just as we actually arrived at the North Pole, GPS in hand (my own phone's GPS showed 89.9999 , not 90.0000 , but a friend's phone did indeed show 90.0000, and the ship's GPS also showed 90.0000 and this is when you hear the ship's horn blow. youtube .com /watch?v=Hzu8GlwmCzg
@dadsoldtapes yes the ice is always shifting because of water flows below. In winter the ice is much thicker of course . I am no big expert on North Pole, I was there only once, but I remember that our expedition leader who has been hundreds of times in the Arctic and this was his 14th North Pole voyage I believe, he said that the ice is always in motion. But you can't see it, it is not like a river ;-)
I am so stupid that I filmed this only in low resolution quality, with a cellphone in 320x240 .... I should at least have used the 640x480 size.... or should have invested in a FHD video cam for this rare occasion.... I doubt I will get a second chance to get up there ;-)
@kris10ish yes it is the geographic north pole. As a passenger on that russian icebreaker it is not so dangerous at all. But we were indeed very lucky to find this beautiful weather on that day, having such nice sunshine and pleasant temp and not much wind was lucky. Our expedition leader told us he had been up at the North Pole over a dozen times and never had had this kind of nice weather, we were really lucky . This was in late July 2008.
yes it is the geographic northpole ( GPS reading N 90.0000 ) .
It is very cold in winter and spring and fall, but summer is a bit better. This was in late july. And it was an unusually mild day, by pure luck and coincidence. Even in july it is not always like that. Our expedition leader said he had been up here over a dozen times, always in late june or july or early august, but never had been this lucky with the weather. Climate vs weather.
I don't know how deep the ice was, precisely, a few meters, anyway enough to carry the weight of the heavy chopper.
I know of 2 icebreakers that go to the North Pole in summer . quarkexpeditions operates the 50 YEARS OF VICTORY and other folks go with the YAMAL. all in all about half a dozen trips to the NP each summer.
Sir, I enjoyed this spirited video of your travel to the North Pole! How deep was the ice there? Is it normal for ships to get that close to the North Pole? Also, do you know approximately how often the North Pole is visited by ships? Thank you!
Brilliant rendition of Ligeti's Requiem by the way.
wtf! now we know why the ice is breaking up in these areas if you want to go to the north pole why dont you fly taking that huge ship into the ice pack wtf are you people on
@KlipsiGeneva Yeah, that guy was completely nuts. Plus if ice cracks it is a good thing. I go ice racing all the time and the cracks freak people out, but really the crack is just the ice's inability to flex so it breaks, then water fills the crack and it refreezes. While it doesn't make a major difference, it does make it just a tiny bit stronger.
The land is really flat.
