Awesome cars!!! I could sell the foz for one almost. My 2001 Forester you can go from Hi Range to Lo or vise versa while on the move, done it at even 100km/hr (60mph). Its got a 45% reduction low range from Hi with 4.11 diffs. Awesome little rig but a more powerful engine could be in order soon :D Its handy to be able to swap between lo and hi when towing, etc.. especially with only a 2.0l engine.
Now, wasn't there some sort of optional fog lamp that was part of the grille? I seem to recall a commercial where the center part of grill flipped up to reveal the lamp....
@JWROWE3 You are correct. My '82 GL 4WD Wagon had one but was disconnected at the factory as they were illegal in California. The guy I sold it to connected it and it worked fine.
4wd up to 50? i have a 86 brat and i havent seen any indications that at i couldnt drive in any speed with the 4wd hi engaged. Ofcourse i know it is a bit rough on the drivetrain but when its really snowy here in norway it is much better to drive with 4wd engaged.
@Soob4ME I had a'80 wagon. If I remember right, you needed to be in neutral and stopped or rolling very slowly to engage the rear wheels (it was front wheel drive normally). The "up to 50mph" refers to the recommended top speed while in 4wd; it was also recommended to engage 4wd only in slippery conditions, never on solid, dry pavement--doing so would eventually lock up the transfer case. Great car except for one thing--4spd manual, so 55mph took 3500 rpm. Mine lasted till '85, NEVER got stuck!
@Iamheofwhomhespeaks I've got an '89 (EA82) and you can shift on the fly just like any other 4wd. Mine's the 5spd d/r though, not the 4spd. From what I understand the 4spd had a very tall 4th gear correct? Making it sort of a pain to pull hills?
@Soob4ME That's correct; going straight, engage the 4WD at up to 50 MPH. They used something like a 3.89 final drive in the front and a 3.90 final drive in the rear on these. I saw it in the Specifications section of several brochures back when these were new. These cars were good, but really slow, and they didn't steer or handle as well as other cars back then. The 1990 Legacy and subsequent designs changed all that.

@Zachry86
I believe he means that you can engage the 4wd from 2wd while moving at speeds up to 50mph.
