The best part about Gary Anderson's miss? Getting drilled by a Falcon player after the kick and not getting a "Roughing the Kicker" call. Kills me to this day as a Vikings fan. This was the year for Vikings football and we made too many arrogant decisions in this game. We tried running the score up with less than a minute going into half time and Cunningham got stripped of the ball.
@gfscarface13 I don't think you undersand how much different the 98 vikings were compared to the 09 team...this should have been a "book it" type of trip to the superbowl. this broke my heart along with 09, I feel like it's going to be forever until we get back to the championship game
Being a die-hard Falcons fan, I was happy to see my team go to its first super bowl. I was 2 years old when this happened, and don't remember watching the game. But my heart truly breaks for Vikings fans. You have had some tough breaks and deserve to win at least one super bowl. I am sorry for your losses, both 1998 and 2009. Believe me, you'll get there soon. Dont lose hope.
Denver Minnesota would of been the GOAT. Denver would of beat Minnesota but at least they would of gave Denver a game unlike Atlanta. Atlanta would of 2 maybe if Eugene dosen't think its important 2 pay a undercover cop 4 sex. My heart breaks 4 u Viking fans. Hope to see u guys there soon.
This sounds bad, but all these losses and everything we've had over the years will make for an incredible Super Bowl win if we ever get it. It's not like we're the Packers who are always at the top or the Patriots who have so many bandwagon fans or the Steelers. Us winning now would mean more to our fanbase than any other fanbase with maybe the exception of poor Buffalo.
Boy Atlanta sure got its revenge on Minnesota after the 1991 series. I remember after the Vikings lost one of my friends said this is probably how the Braves fans felt after game seven. Kudos to the Falcons but man that loss was terrible.
That was sad! im not a vikings fan at all and i got all misty eyed. Sometimes its just sad that really good players never get the ring, like dan marino.
This is so sad but is really what the Vikings are known for. Sadly probably never will win a Super Bowl, 4 chances in the 1970s, good 1990s and exceptional 1998 team, then 2009 was one more opportunity that fell short. Some things just aren't meant to be.
@z71pack It is sad. The Vikings are the Cubs and up until a few years ago, the Red Sox of the NFL. It's like some teams are cursed no matter what they do.....
Guys as hard as 2009 was, if you remember 1998 as vividly as i do despite just being a child - there is NO comparison, being a viking fan in 1998 is something you will NEVER FORGET. STILL BRINGS SADNESS TO MY HEART

but i do think chris carter, randle and randy, and anderson deserved a super bowl ring. especially carter and moss for being ahead of their time.
This is tough to swallow. My High school team won the state championship during this season. I got very sick the day of the NFC Championship and when Morton hit that field goal I almost fainted. It was the worst feeling, that was when I started feeling as though the NFL was fixed. Now after seeing 2009 Championship as an adult I think it is fixed even more now then I did before. How can we find this many ways to lose when clearly we have the better team.
@Delanie34 Just hang in there man. The vikings will win a superbowl and when they do it'll be more glorious than ever due to the past failures. I find it to be more special when a team finally wins the big one after past failed attempts rather than a dynasty who always seems to win. I'm a niners fan and when I saw them loose today agianst the giants in overtime my heart sunk deep into my stomach since this was the first time i witness the niners loose in the playoffs in my generation.
this is why im a viking fan. to see the vikings win a super bowl will be almost as great as the day i win the highs school championship. We hav a great team for next year young christian ponder, a great TE for the future Kyle Rudolph, Mr. 69 Jared Allen, Percy Harvin, and hopefully Adrian Peterson returns to us.
Denver was really good too though. 2,000 yard rusher in T.D. and of course the magnificent Elway. Would have loved to see that super bowl but Denver was as good of a team as the Vikings, plus they destroyed the Falcons in the super bowl.

'09 was our year in my opinion. We had arguably the greatest offense of all time in '98, but our mediocre defense combined with the defensive injuries we suffered in this game would have made it extremely tough to stop a very high powered broncos offense in the superbowl. '09 we had a very balanced team, but we fumbled away a superbowl ring that year against the saints in the NFC championship in my opinion.

@gfscarface13 I can imagine the feeling of coming up close and coming empty handed. Don't worry, keep faith! The Vikes will win a Super Bowl in the next 10-20 years
Im not saying thats a bad thing its just one of th good things of losing th year befoe that 31 teams lose one of those teams rise to the occassion while the other teams repeat the process. Every team will at one point have thier year it wont be the same players that did great before and killed themselves to reach that pinnacle but those players that nevr get that chance again this is their story 1998 Vikings.
Yah I will amit it is very SAD and Im not a viking fan but I used to play football in high school and we had a vey good team but we were matched up with top contenders in the state and for athletes thats all they have so when th team fails the players fail as a team as a group. Nobody focuses on the teams that lose all that matters in the US is the team that wins it all. one thing that fans foget is that on of those teams that lost the yar before will win it that year then thy finally earn rspct
it is hardly ever mentioned, what I think, is the real reason they lost in 98. It was when Randall C took the knee on 3rd down with more than 30 seconds left because Denny would not give him the freakin' play, he started walking toward Denny on the sideline...waisted all that time...you could see the frustration with Randall C and Randy Moss....odds were bomb it to Moss and score, 95% probability, but Denny just waisted the time and later, ultimately lost there chance at going to the Superbowl.
@hugonian1 i almost forgot to ask, since every good offense needs a good line, do you remember who was on the offensive line? Was corey Stringer on it? any other pro bowlers?
Cris Carters quote "walking off that field and losing like that...I didnt even know if I wanted to play football any more, because I just felt like I would never win after that." It is one of the most heart breaking quotes I have ever heard a player say. And as a huge Vikings fan I can say I felt the same way. After that game I felt like we would never win a superbowl. And in 2009 I had the same feeling. Its like no matter how good we are, something will cost us a championship.
To be honest a lot of people say Jerry Rice was the best reciever of all time. I felt Cris Carter was underrated compared to him because Rice played on a much greater team. It's a shame Rice goes into the all of fame and not yet Carter. That is a crime.
What I did not like was the Vikings were at Mid field with under a minute and Denny Green chose to take a knee to go to overtime. That was very pitiful. You don't do that in a championship game. Whay kind of stupidity was that?
@job1785 ~ I could not agree more. As I remember it back then it was a truly amazing season in 98. Back then there were 6 pre-season games. Not that they mean anything, but I remember the Vikings won all 6 pre-season games and only lost one regular season game by 3 points to Tampa Bay (of all teams). While the 98 Vikes regular season scoring reached 556 points. I will always remember Randall C walking toward Denny waiting for a play call and and nothing...and had the leagues best offense!
@hugonian1 Denny Green made a big mistake on that one...thanks for sharing that, i don't remember him doing that....i guess he thought anderson was automatic....then again look at brett Favre and his INT against the Saints....maybe he thought cunningham could have been picked..... in reality the Vikings defense was mediocre.
In my opinion the 1998 Vikings were the best team of all time minus a super bowl. A lot of people say the 2007 Patriots are but I disagree because they already have three super bowls under their belt in the past few years. The Vikings never won.
Watching this makes my stomach hurt. I remember being 11 years old and crushed when we lost this game.
Love the pass interference on Randy thought at 0:13 that goes uncalled. Can't live in 'what ifs' but man... had that been called, things would have been very different.
@stairatthesun where is the pass interference on that play? he never touched randy. plus he looked back and made a play on the ball so it wasn't face guarding. not sure you know what pass interference is.
as a hardcore falcon fan. even i get cold chills when i hear the music when morten kicks it... if there was ever a game we would have lost, and i wouldn't have been so mad, it was that game.... the vikings had everything goin for them, very tough team, they just beat the crap outta us and when we went to play denver we were so beat up we couldn't do anything... if the vikes would have played in the bowl, they would have beaten denver by about 40-14, being serious. its the falcons year this year!
This video twists my stomach into 1 tight knot just as it was the day we watched our best team ever finish just a little short. What a season to remember. I spent more time standing and yelling and jumping in celebration than I did sitting on my ass in the chair! There will never be another team like em. Our '98 Minnesota Vikings.
I'm a cowboy fan, but i thought it wuz bad wen the cowboys lost to the giants in the 2007 playoffs, but this one wuz even worse, one of the best teams of all time, and dont even make the super bowl, the vikings have no luck what so ever, they been to like 4 super bowls and lost all 4 of them, that's ridiculous, and then the 2009 vikings, i thought they were gonna win it, until brett favre choked throwing that interception
as a dolphins fan i can really relate to this it reminds me of the 1994 divisional playoff game when miami had a 15 point lead at halftime and blew it
this video is heartbreaking on a serious note and im not a vikings fan but remember them since the days of anthony carter and wade wilson coming up short every year:(
Anyone else think they should make a 2009 vikings missing rings? I really thought we were gonna do it. Because all in all that saints game we played like shit and still almost won.
none of them even went out to shake hands with the crappy falcons cause they knew that they should have won. There would be no "good game you guys deserved to win" BS cause the vikes should have won period.
i get cold chills when we kick the ball to win the game and that music plays.. im a die hard falcons fan, always will be, but that game, if the vikes would have beaten us, they would have murdered denver... we were so beat up from the vikes, we couldn't do anything in the bowl.. our time is coming though, this was a very good team though!
I'm surprised they never mentioned the 41-0 loss to the Giants in the NFC Championship Game two years later. Minnesota was a slight favorite going into that game, and I thought the Vikings could have redeemed themselves a little bit by winning that game. I think losing 41-0 to the Giants was more shocking than the loss to Atlanta. I still can't believe Minnesota was shut out in such a huge game. The Giants winning that game wasn't a big surprise, but the way they won it was shocking.
Minnesota also choked in the regular season that year. They started 11-2 before losing the last 3 games and giving the homefield advantage to the NY Giants. I also remember a loss against Green Bay on Monday night which Minnesota gave away that year. I think winning that game would have given Minnesota the #1 seed.
This missing rings episode focuses so much on 98 that they could have done another episode that continued after this one, and that focused more on 2000.
Such a joke losing to the crappy Falcons. We'd obliterate that team 9 times out of 10. Totally lucky win for them - the missed Int before the end of the game, dropped Moss pass, missed FG??! Such a joke. And we all knew the craptacular Falcons had ZERO chance in the Super Bowl. Sad. So sad. :(
As a Packer fan I will admit that I hated that team, but you can't help, but feel terrible for John Randle, and Cris Carter as both of those guys deserved to at the very least play at the Super Bowl. That was also probably the greatest team I ever watched played.
Take nothing away from this 98 team they were damn good and exciting, but even if they managed to get by the Falcons (which they deserved to) i find it hard to believe that they would've beaten the Broncos. Elway was on a mission and it was his last go but damn that Super Bowl would've been a shootout for the ages.
@TheClebrowns4life To be honest i find it hard to see Elway beating the Vikings....I mean the Vikings were stacked that year...They had a down game against ATL but if they wouldve won i think that would be it
Im a DIE HARD!!! ...........DIE HARD!!! Vikings Fan! That beeing said, I never cried because we lost a game, that is , until we lost this one! 12 years later and the sting is still there. MAN! what a blow!
@DBShowtime15 me too...it cuts deep....and the thing about it is that the Broncos didnt even wanna face the Vikings cuz they knew it woulda been their ass lol
Minnesota would've lost to Denver anyway. The Vikings had a better receiving corps, but that's it. Denver's defense was FAR superior- and on offense, virtually position by position with maybe a few exceptions on the line (MAYBE), I'd go with Elway, Davis, Sharpe, etc. (even Elam!)
Remember, Denver went 13-0 before losing against the NYG. They then played likely playoff opponent Miami, and clearly played opossum. Thus, 14-2. But when Denver and Miami indeed met in the playoffs- 38-3 Denver.
You're saying that forgetting that MINNESOTA was 15-1. And they didn't play possum in Miami...they got their asses kicked. Those Jimmy Johnson teams were much better at home than on the road. Denver was a good champion, but Minnesota presented an ENTIRELY different challenge. Hell, ATLANTA moved the ball up and down the field on Denver. They just self-destructed in the Red Zone over and over again. It would've been the first to 35 if it was Denver/Minnesota.
Miami was certainly not better than Denver. Broncos at that point had nothing to play for. 31-21 is not an ass kicking. 38-3 is.
Minnesota went 15-1 but look at the schedule- an easy division other than GB- and outside the division they played the Rams, Redskins, Saints, Bengals, Ravens, Cowboys, Jags and Oilers- only GB and DAL made the playoffs that year, and only WAS, DAL, and GB had ever even REACHED a Super Bowl yet. Hell, STL and CIN were the 2 worst teams of the DECADE!
I didn't say they were. I said Miami was a much better team at home. As in they were better at home than on the road. Nothing in there stated they were better than DENVER. Reading comprehension my man.
You say ONLY Green Bay...except Green Bay was the two-time defending NFC Champion and was basically two plays from being the two-time Super Bowl champion. And Minnesota smoked them. I don't care who you play...only four teams in history have gone 15-1.
It was an impressive season, and truth be told- The Vikes are my favorite NFC team. Cunningham and Carter are amongst my all time favorite players. But I just don't understand why so many assume that they would've beaten Denver. Obviously, I disagree ;)
Denver steamrolled through everyone that year. TD would've had a legit shot at the single season rushing record had he not sat out the equivalent of TWO FULL GAMES because the Broncos had so often put the game out of reach.
That much I agree with. Denver's start was nothing short of spectacular. I just saw a couple of teams that were a lot more similar than people realize. Neither defense was elite. You could move the ball on them both. What they both did was turn you over. That was a product of two amazing offenses jumping on you and making you one-dimensional. People assume it would've been close because Minnesota lost two games...by three pts apiece. And NO ONE on Denver could stop Moss.
Yea, that Carter/Moss corps was unreal- one of the all time greats- and that tandem against TD and the Bronco O-Line would've been epic. And I don't mind the assumption of it being close- I don't doubt that. I just disagree with the conclusion that most people seem to reach hehe
@GrassValleyGreg The Dolphins were completely banged up in that game. At least two of their best defenders were out. That's why the Broncos ran wild over them. If Miami was at full strength, that game would have been a whole lot closer.
@EddieLeeIvery You Sir, are a terrible sportsman, arrogant, cowardly, and most of all, The reason that greem bay packer fans every where are treated like jerks. And the fact that you haven't answer this just proves how cowardly you really are! SKOL VIKINGS!!!!!!
@EddieLeeIvery you fat ass packer fans will suck so much dick to get whatever you fuckers want, while us true loyal vikings fans have never given up....and we never will. oh btw, your mascot name "packers" is the gayest in the fucking world, so gay that you get it from fans packing fudge in each others assholes. vikings were true warriors and will never quit til we get a ring. go suck aaron rodgers' dick ya faggot
I'm a Bears fan to the core, but man! Randall Cunningham, Cris Carter, Randay Moss, "Spin Doctor" Robert Smith, John Randle, Gary Anderson; '98 Vikings were a hell of a team!! No diss to the Falcons but it would've been great to see the Vikes and Broncos in the Super Bowl that year.
@Ghostpilot1983 i agree, but terrell davis and that Broncos offensive line would have run all over them, just my opinion, but i think it would have been a close one...Broncos defense was good, but definately not great..... Vikings defense wasn't good enough.
@mytimton they're not going to do a missing rings for the 07 patriots because they had already won 3 previous superbowls that decade. It's called missing rings for a reason
What a sad ending. Wow, I really, really feel sorry for Vikings fans after watching this. As a matter of fact that ending kind of put me in a depressed mood, and I'm a Skins fan(we've won 3, one of which, XXVI, I witnessed on tv). This is a very well produced episode of this show, or any other show for that matter. They did a good job of building it up, or cruising you through the green lights, and then T-boning your emotions with a mack truck, just as Randle described the season in the opening
@ShinobiMusashi1 Same here, I'm a Skins fan too, and after the 2009 NFC Championship, I really felt bad for Vikings fans, cuz they are a Snakebitten franchise, but no disrespect to the Saints and their fans though, I was glad when they won SuperBowl XLIV
It's fascinating, 1998 vs. 2009... in my mind, they'd have never won the Super Bowl in '98, with all the injuries they sustained against the Falcons... whereas they really had a chance against the Colts, if they'd just got there... But somehow, '98 was still devastating to me...
One day, hopefully while my Dad is still alive, the Vikings will win a Super Bowl. And that, will be the greatest day of my life. Even when that happens though, the thought of this season will still hurt. When you get scarred this deep, it never truly heals.
The NFL needs a Missing Rings for the 1998 Atlanta Falcons and Eugene Robinson why he thought a prostitute was more important than the Super Bowl Ring.
They returned to the nfc championship game in 2010 only to be defeated by the saints because of brett favres dumb decisions to make chances, it wouldve been a colts vikings superbowl but the colts wouldve creamed the vikings in the sb
@sidprogrammer how do you figure they would have "creamed" them? The Vikings in reality had the chance to win that game with seconds left and the Saints ended up going on to beat the Colts. I didn't watch the Super Bowl last year, but I heard on the radio just after it got over the commentator say "The Vikings should be Super Bowl champions right now".
I truly feel this team would have given Denver a run for their money in Miami. They certainly would have posed more of a threat than Atlanta, who the Broncos made everyone forget even made it to the Super Bowl. The Vikes may not have won, but they would have made some noise.
The best part about Gary Anderson's miss? Getting drilled by a Falcon player after the kick and not getting a "Roughing the Kicker" call. Kills me to this day as a Vikings fan. Every team will at one point have thier year it wont be the same players that did great before and killed themselves to reach that pinnacle but those players that nevr get that chance again this is their story 1998 Vikings.
rupp87 4 months ago
Yah I will amit it is very SAD and Im not a viking fan but I used to play football in high school and we had a vey good team but we were matched up with top contenders in the state and for athletes thats all they have so when th team fails the players fail as a team as a group. Nobody focuses on the teams that lose all that matters in the US is the team that wins it all. one thing that fans foget is that on of those teams that lost the yar before will win it that year then thy finally earn rspct

job1785 5 months ago
it is hardly ever mentioned, what I think, is the real reason they lost in 98. It was when Randall C took the knee on 3rd down with more than 30 seconds left because Denny would not give him the freakin' play, he started walking toward Denny on the sideline...waisted all that time...you could see the frustration with Randall C and Randy Moss....odds were bomb it to Moss and score, 95% probability, but Denny just waisted the time and later, ultimately lost there chance at going to the Superbowl.
hugonian1 5 months ago
@hugonian1 i almost forgot to ask, since every good offense needs a good line, do you remember who was on the offensive line? Was corey Stringer on it? any other pro bowlers?
quincee33 4 months ago
Cris Carters quote "walking off that field and losing like that...I didnt even know if I wanted to play football any more, because I just felt like I would never win after that." It is one of the most heart breaking quotes I have ever heard a player say. And as a huge Vikings fan I can say I felt the same way. After that game I felt like we would never win a superbowl. And in 2009 I had the same feeling. Its like no matter how good we are, something will cost us a championship.
metathus 5 months ago
To be honest a lot of people say Jerry Rice was the best reciever of all time. I felt Cris Carter was underrated compared to him because Rice played on a much greater team. It's a shame Rice goes into the all of fame and not yet Carter. That is a crime.
job1785 5 months ago
What I did not like was the Vikings were at Mid field with under a minute and Denny Green chose to take a knee to go to overtime. That was very pitiful. You don't do that in a championship game. Whay kind of stupidity was that?
job1785 5 months ago
@job1785 ~ I could not agree more. As I remember it back then it was a truly amazing season in 98. Back then there were 6 pre-season games. Not that they mean anything, but I remember the Vikings won all 6 pre-season games and only lost one regular season game by 3 points to Tampa Bay (of all teams). While the 98 Vikes regular season scoring reached 556 points. I will always remember Randall C walking toward Denny waiting for a play call and and nothing...and had the leagues best offense!
hugonian1 5 months ago
@hugonian1 Denny Green made a big mistake on that one...thanks for sharing that, i don't remember him doing that....i guess he thought anderson was automatic....then again look at brett Favre and his INT against the Saints....maybe he thought cunningham could have been picked..... in reality the Vikings defense was mediocre.
quincee33 4 months ago
In my opinion the 1998 Vikings were the best team of all time minus a super bowl. A lot of people say the 2007 Patriots are but I disagree because they already have three super bowls under their belt in the past few years. The Vikings never won.
job1785 5 months ago
@job1785 qualifying that with "minus a superbowl" is already presumptuous. Your team lost the NFC championship, not the superbowl.

as a hardcore falcon fan. even i get cold chills when i hear the music when morten kicks it... if there was ever a game we would have lost, and i wouldn't have been so mad, it was that game.... the vikings had everything goin for them, very tough team, they just beat the crap outta us and when we went to play denver we were so beat up we couldn't do anything... if the vikes would have played in the bowl, they would have beaten denver by about 40-14, being serious. its the falcons year this year!

I'm a cowboy fan, but i thought it wuz bad wen the cowboys lost to the giants in the 2007 playoffs, but this one wuz even worse, one of the best teams of all time, and dont even make the super bowl, the vikings have no luck what so ever, they been to like 4 super bowls and lost all 4 of them, that's ridiculous, and then the 2009 vikings, i thought they were gonna win it, until brett favre choked throwing that interception

leeboy196 7 months ago
I'm surprised they never mentioned the 41-0 loss to the Giants in the NFC Championship Game two years later. Minnesota was a slight favorite going into that game, and I thought the Vikings could have redeemed themselves a little bit by winning that game. I think losing 41-0 to the Giants was more shocking than the loss to Atlanta. I still can't believe Minnesota was shut out in such a huge game. The Giants winning that game wasn't a big surprise, but the way they won it was shocking.
Steve00077 7 months ago

GrassValleyGreg 8 months ago
@GrassValleyGreg
It would've been the first to 35 if it was Denver/Minnesota.
cbaldwinjr 8 months ago
@cbaldwinjr
GrassValleyGreg 8 months ago
@GrassValleyGreg
I don't care who you play...only four teams in history have gone 15-1.
cbaldwinjr 8 months ago
@cbaldwinjr
GrassValleyGreg 8 months ago
@GrassValleyGreg
And NO ONE on Denver could stop Moss.
cbaldwinjr 8 months ago
@cbaldwinjr
Yea, that Carter/Moss corps was unreal- one of the all time greats- and that tandem against TD and the Bronco O-Line would've been epic. And I don't mind the assumption of it being close- I don't doubt that. I just disagree with the conclusion that most people seem to reach hehe
GrassValleyGreg 8 months ago
@GrassValleyGreg The Dolphins were completely banged up in that game. At least two of their best defenders were out. That's why the Broncos ran wild over them. If Miami was at full strength, that game would have been a whole lot closer.

But somehow, '98 was still devastating to me...

sidprogrammer 1 year ago
@sidprogrammer how do you figure they would have "creamed" them? The Vikings in reality had the chance to win that game with seconds left and the Saints ended up going on to beat the Colts. I didn't watch the Super Bowl last year, but I heard on the radio just after it got over the commentator say "The Vikings should be Super Bowl champions right now".
Bobbysboy 1 year ago
I truly feel this team would have given Denver a run for their money in Miami. They certainly would have posed more of a threat than Atlanta, who the Broncos made everyone forget even made it to the Super Bowl. The Vikes may not have won, but they would have made some noise.
