had the pleasure of meeting this lovely man and his wife at a book signing around 2003/2004? was an absolute honour to shake his hand and speak with him for a few brief moments. was also lucky enough to be there and take part in the standing ovation he received before his final commentary at the millenium stadium for the match between wales and scotland (how apt) im passionate about rugby and this man influenced me as much if not more than some of the great players ive watched. legend. thank you
one of the main reasons i became a rugby fan was because of Bill McLaren. I love the game and I remember kicking a rugby ball about in my back garden and pretending to be in match with him as the commentator. I could do his voice pretty well. He was a great ambassador to the game of rugby union. No other rugby commentator will ever be able to reach his high standards. RIP Bill, you will never be forgotten
Rugby has lost its voice, that lyrical poetic Hawick lilt. Thank you for every "dancing in the streets of.... ... tonight" and he's like a mad............ when he gets started". Once more thank you Mr Mclaren.
oh and ive spent a fortune on hawick balls as well thanks to him. rugby coverage will never be the same again. god bless you mr mclaren.

From an old Sassenach.
You were a true gentleman, un- biased, a really great commentator, an icon, the likes of which we will probably not see again.
Thank you Bill McClaren.
