I can understand why it's dumb to drive or bike in front (more risk of something unexpected happening), but if you can gauge how fast the train is going, and your walking speed, it's safer than crossing a road with cars. The train will not speed up rapidly or swerve unexpectedly. The guy on a cellphone was a dumbass though.

are the engineers allowed to do the long-long-short-long series? Whoa, I'd be scared as hell being the engineer on those trains. Imagine having to do a left turn in front of one o' those?
it's worse when people tail behind the train and rear end one of the F59s, P42s, or P32s. and since the train doesn't have brakes lights, people can't gauge the speed, plus now you're at a blind spot for other trains. a lot of accidents or "close calls" happen when people tail trains on this road.
32 Amtrak Capitols pass through Jack Jondon Square each weekday. Daily Amtrak trains are 2 Amtrak Coast Starlights and 8 San Joaquins. So, typically 42 Passenger trains pass through Jack London Square a day. That's not incuding freight trains.
And passed around Union Pacific, BNSF, Souther Norfolk and/or CSX?
Good video! :)

I was stuck there for four hours one day (6 March 2007) and did not see a single UP. Just a bunch of Capitols and the Warm Springs local.
