What existed before Google? AJ, AOL, Yahoo, Lycos, MSN and a host of other internet search engines. And a student only asking 1 question every 10 hours? this "video" which is only a powerpoint or keynote presentation, is fact after fact, it does nothing to explain how and why technology needs to be used in class.
I loved this video. I wish they had done things like this for me in high school. the closest I got to this was in my web design class and that was still missing a lot. Props to the maker for pointing out the facts and trying to open the eyes of those that cant see!
@helpdotcom: Do you think you're the only person on earth who can have intelligent thoughts and make intelligent comments online? You're contradicting your comment with what you're saying. If kids are writing with texts, facebook, or whatever, and you take that away do you expect them to start writing letters in the mail or composing symphonies or something? The computer doesn't distract anyone from their real life, it is their real life, however lame it may be.
Personally, I think technology is highly overrated. We all get so enamoured with google and computers that we stop really interacting with each other, using our brains to solve problems and so forth.
I find that the computer robs us of our imagination, plays havoc with our attention span and generally distracts us from our real lives.
@HELPDOTCOM I think you need to look deeper. Technology is a tool, it can be used for good or harm. The things that you can create using technology are innumerable. Simply saying that technology robs us of imagination isn't a fair statement. You could say that technology has robbed me of my imagination, but that would only be because you have used it incorrectly. Technology is a tool and it is only as good or bad as the person using it. Which is part of the point of this video. Being responsible
like the ideas but, we would really have to start enforcing no texting and driviing though. and if not started enforcing strong and now, how many more accidents happen because of it. maybe they would have to do the assignments in teams so that they are still connecting with people face to face. we need to start paying attention. so mant different senarios. maybe stop spending money on texted books. equip schools with big screens and programs. wireless keyboards on the desks. who knows
Good ideas were presented in this video, but how about using more up-to-date music in the background instead of something that sounds like it belongs with a silent movie from the 1920's?
i like all your comments... but really name of song? anyone?
And i think that this method of teaching is a good OPTION and not something that should be obligated on all students... those who are not able to utilize technology for their studying benefits can keep going to their lectures while those who are good with electronic devices can use this method. I dont see how calling somone and asking them simple question could teach students anything!
but the idea of podcast and having pop up quizes on ur cell phone are a great idea. Imagine sitting in the metro and a quiz pops up, u have nothing to do... u decide to do waste time while doing the popquiz!
I really enjoy the ideas for using texting as a part of class. I don't think I could get anyone outside of the USA to respond to me in ten minutes, and the rate for international texting can be much higher, even for an unlimited plan, but the concept I think is good.
There is an erroneous assumption here that all students are proficient with technology and need to be taught with technology. We do a disservice to students to assume that they all want or can handle classes that are heavily oriented toward technology. Class isn't boring just because we don't use blogs, etc. to teach. As a college instructor, I find this particular video presumptuous and insulting. It is also way too long to keep attention of those who grew up in the sound-bite era!
My father (a teacher) along with his siblings (also teachers) would have integrated this into their system. They were not Unionised. Excellence was the only criteria to keep their jobs, not tenure. There was no welfare system to fall back on. daflikkers.blogspot 'URL' it

As a teacher of high school boys, many of whom are gifted I find this video very powerful. It has a message for every educator of today's children.
