  • Tried to see Be-Bop on US tour in 77, sat through atrocious warm-up act. An hour later, MC announced that the show was cancelled! Fast-forward 27 years. London, 2004. I flew there, front row-center, Bill rocked! He chatted politely for 15 minutes or so afterward, signed my programs, laughed when i told him how long I'd waited to hear "Maid in Heaven" live. Legendary!

  • this sure brings back memories. growing up in L.A. in the '70's, Be Bop Deluxe was on all the rock stations (KLOS,KMET and KWST) i still have my vinyl of these guys. why they didn't go to superstar status is a mistery?? playing drums in many bands, all the guitar player were doing Bill's riffs and solo's. why not! they were the best at the time. sad we lost a great bass player and back-up vocalist some years back. keep rock'n.

  • Selling ourselves down the river. So true..

  • Nelson was a monster guitarist....this band was so underated...what a shame....meanwhile,EVERONE knows who Katy Perry is screwing this week!

  • Saw Bee Bop Deluxe in concert and the opening act was Tom Petty.

  • This is AWESOME!!!

  • can i just mention that actually david bowie wrote lyrics for many people and their songs are hailed as brilliant but no one says: oh but bowie wrote that! so whats wrong with having inspiration, when writting your own material from an amazing person????

  • My God !! , Where do ya begin ? arguably THE most underrated guitarist/composer/songwriter . . , when this man plays he gives voice to the angels , and I dont just hand out bouquets , (I am a musician . . ), but , honest to god , he brings tears to my eyes . . .and he's genuine as well . .go figure . .

  • Does anyone know if there are any "high quality" videos of BBD on the web (especially the early stuff) ?

I saw them four times live in the US and they were awesome!

Bill Nelson is an awesome guitarist live, and I've seen a lot of others...Fripp and Clapton in their prime, for example.

  • wauw with phill lynot?

  • Today BBD has also found the way to a little house in Switzerland :)

    Amazing band, perfect music.

Thank you for upload this video. (I'm happy that i listen [with 24] to such music instead of justin beeber for example haha) :D

    good night

  • that boy on the bass looks like a maori , i know my people from like ,....a mile away

  • @sskkramer Charlie Tumahai was a Tahitian /Maori

  • I like this version better than the album recording. Never cared for that baritone sax solo.

    PEACE !!!!

  • Classic Bill Nelson, great to see it after all these years

  • Thanks for this Great post, see you got the sound track on side of vid too! Love it.;-o)

  • I love this band and I'm in my 20s. Great stuff.

  • BBD never had a hit in the US and while technically good, were widely considered a worldwide flop

  • @powerkor Fro what I hear they were pretty popular in the USA my mom still has her original vinyl from Sunburst Finish that she bought in 76 or 77. They may not have been David Bowie but people knew them.

  • I used to have a BBD record called "Live in the Air Age".They did a song on there I think was called "Adventures in a Yorkshire landscape" or something like that.Had one of the most killer guitar solos on that track I've ever heard.Anybody remember that album?? I tried finding it on cd a few years ago with no luck. :-(

  • The record is actually called 'Axe Victim'. It was BBD's first LP.

  • Ron, I have a 9min live version made in 1976. I will see what i can do.

  • Yes you are correct there was an album called 'Live in the air age' and there was a live version AIYL on there, it was slighty different to the original which was on 'Axe Victim' in that it had a more bluesy feel. I think you can get it on cd, I still have a copy of the record along with the included ep.

  • @wyattcranley

Hi the original "life in the air age" was on Sunburst Finish I have all the original vinyl albums plus Bill's first solo album Saw them in Stoke on Trent in 1976

    They were/are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Hozzerbardy Thats right, but I was refering to AIY Landscape, in reply to ron simple below.....

  • @wyattcranley Yea sorry man misread your comment They were a little too "late glam" for me on the first album but AIYL was on of the great tracks

  • only time they ever let me down, they were recording this at totp couldnt land at leeds/bradford fogbound, had to sit through two sets by doctors of madness, absolute garbage. shame on you bill.

  • for some reason this track just gets better and better, I never get fed up of it

  • wakie!!!!!!!

  • Bill was the lord of the Record Bar :)

  • OMG BRILLIANT.... walking down memory lane ..i grew up with thiss next to grandfunk railroad..thx 4 posting..keep up the good work

  • fuckin BRILLANT

  • wish i could have seen great bands like this live. why does music nowdays have to be so repetitive and only made to pease idiots that hear DOOF DOOF and go crazy. not say there still arent alot of great bands, but nothing can compete with 70's rock.

  • wow hes a young arnie swartzeneger

  • Taken from a fantastic album, the memories come flooding back!

  • One hell of a track

  • wakefields finest. good memories..

  • is right - the Record Bar ruled :)

  • Better than on the album. Thank so much for posting.

Bill and the band, living and past on....god bless you. Your influence is still every great musician's "trade secret".

  • Ahh the good old days 1976 I think. The year I left school at 16 and beer was 24p a pint, I could get pissed for less than 50p happy days. :-)

  • u r rite there mate

  • OMFG I am born again! Bless you bringing this back for me, 2nd concert I ever saw back in the 70s. Thank you Thank you so much! :)

  • What a great way to spend 3 minutes 57 seconds.

  • This was my first intro to Bill...OGWT...theafter hooked!!!!!!

  • Jimi wasnt exactly Brad Prit , but what a musician !!

  • wtf jimi wasnt what / this is a be bop deluxe song pull your head from your ass ,you read too much people magazine, explain yourself moron

  • Please accept my deepest apologies, the only explanation i have is that i was seven sheets to the wind and had previously been watching Hendrix , it is of course Be Bop DeLuxe . But i must tell you i do not read people magazines, and i am certainly , when sober , not a moron .

  • Think most of you are missing the most important point, Bill Nelson is a genius.

    A brilliant musician and songwriter.

  • Is this not being played on supersonic? I tell you what, it is rare to see some live stuff on that programme! Great band!

  • yes- never saw them as far as i know- but a great band - haircuts are not the issue- hey i remember the mayfare newcastle- saw marc bolan before t-rex there -also princial edwards - scary place

thanksa for the post - bulgaria says hello

  • Sad yes. But i personally think he looks more like Egor...

  • Oh yeah and I suppose you are the cats arse in the looks department?

  • The hills have eyes 1

  • max n daves song igave her the vinyl n 32 years later were together tru luv

  • last band i saw at newcastle mayfair ballroom around 1977 supported by doctors of madness

  • This is from the Supersonic show!

  • Hah, played this for my english class on modern music lyrics in high school back in 1978. I remember one of the other presentations was K.C. and the Sunshine Band "That's the was uh, uh I like it". I was the next one up with my vinyl in hand. Total silence was the reaction including the teacher who made me stop the sax solo at the end. Beautiful...

  • @28if ^ Cool! Back in my HS days the photo. club every year would put on a slideshow show w/songs in our auditorium: black light posters & props painted in neon colors & great sound system. Always played the song Money. At football games the band would open w/the Hawaii 5-0 theme song. We had a hip young Engl. teacher who taught a class on lyrics, exploring themes of alienation using Sounds of Silence & People Are Strange, altho those songs were a bit dated by then. Those were the days :)

  • Be Bop was my favorite band 10 seconds into the first song I ever heard from them.

Totally redefined modern music and influenced many who likely aren't even aware of it.

Bill was / is a genius

  • great name for a band .

  • Great live version of this song - better then the version on "Air Age" IMHO.

How many 335s did Bill have??? This one is a different colour as well as having a different type of tremelo to the one he is playing on the "Bring Back The Spark" video ...

SG2000s? OK for Carlos Santana but Bill is a 335 man !!!!!

  • This is an ES355 in this video and Bill bought it about the time "Sunburst Finish" came out as a back up to the 345, that his father bought for him in the early '60s. Bill still has the 345, although it has had some major surgery and he used it on on the "Lost Satellites" tour of 2004.

  • Cheers! Just shows a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing!

It would be great if somebody could add an entry on Bill to the "Notable Gibson Users" page on Wikipedia especially as (IIRC) hadly anybody was playing wide-bodied Gibson semi-acoustics in the mid '70s. Still, they'd probably take it off on the basis the Bill isn't "notable". Philistines!

  • There is not a great deal of difference between a 335 and the 345/355 apart from some hardware and the latter two models having a varitone. I also think the 355 has a stereo output.

  • alex lifeson from rush was using a 355 around the middle to the late 70's, i think

  • Yeah but he was crap and might as well have been playing a Ukulele... sorry just my opinion.

  • Thanks so much for putting this up - Sunburst Finish was the first album I bought.

    Ah the memories ...

  • COOOOOOOOOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW!

  • Ah memories...shame no-one has the Red Noise clips from the OGWT to post.

  • I guess the log-in gives it away. One of the 10 albums I'd take to the moon. Lucky enough to see them twice here in Canada. Thanks so much for posting this. I don't know anybody now who's even heard of them.

  • Yeah, The Field House and Massey Hall along with City Boy, bloody marvellous gigs; some of us were right there with you.

  • Great stuff, the third album as I remember:)

  • I worked on a BeBop tour. That was a great band.

They had a lovely tight sound.

  • without love my light is dim! :)

  • Fantastic! Thanks for putting this up. For a moment at the beginning, I got my hopes up that the famous "pods" would be seen when the smoke cleared.
