I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, is it the same to change the hard drive in this as in the video? Is there a limit of gb I can fit? as I wanted fo fit a 1tb. Finally the cd you mentioned at the end, I do not have that anymore so what will I do? I run on vista just now

also, i need to replace my DVD drive, what type of drive fits into the 6400?

Thank you.

  • thank youuu :)

  • Cheers for this instructional video mate. My Inspiron took a rather heavy fall a few months ago and the hard drive gave up the ghost along with much of the casing around the screen. Haven't used it since then because I've had absolutely no time to sort it out, up until tonight :) Cheers

  • Thanks to you I have completely installed a new hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 1720. I have reinstalled the operating system and restored files from a backup disc, but I have one problem remaining. I can't get my wifi to work. It worked fine before I needed to replace my hard drive. Is there something I'm missing?

  • @TheTazwife u need to install the driver for it

  • are all laptop hard drives the same?

  • @PeronMiles i think so, they're relatively small in size. those hard drives for computer cases are much larger.

  • thnk u 4 postn this, it really helpd me out a lot :)

  • Thanks for this video! It really helped me out today.

  • my computer keep says cannot find system or something

  • so you have to reinstall the OS did i understand that right

  • @jasada09 I know I am not the video guy, just someone who felt like replying. With a brand new HDD there is no way for it to have the OS already on it, so you do have to format and install the OS. Think about it like an Ipod. You may have an ipod already with a ton of music on it but if you buy a new one it wont automatically have that same music on it.

  • i have a 500 GB hard drive i want to put in my laptop but afraid to screw something up because i got my laptop as a gift for christmas and hate to ruin it but this video made it seem easy and i think im going to try tonight

  • I have donde every step you explained here but still I have a message that says that no hard drive found. what am i doing wrong here? does it have to do anything with the caddy? adaptor?

  • @elkintobitle you need to use the caddy adapter if thats what your asking.

  • Ive never seen such a thing. is it like a little box you put the HD in?

  • @elkintobitle take your time and follow the video carefully.

  • Ok I get it. But my old Hd is bare. No caddy. do I have to buy a caddy for my new one? what about the adapter? is it the same thing adapter and caddy? my laptop is very old.

  • thanks for the tutorial.

  • are the screw the same size? all 4 of them?

  • Could I put the removed hard drive into another computer? Could someone tell me what would happen?

  • you'd have to use a HDD usb caddy, Azn096.

  • You can put that into an external hardrive enclosure and access its files :)

  • I keep getting messages that my disk space on my OS C:drive is low, so if I replace my internal hard drive with a new one with more space, will I have to do anything else after installing it?

  • I just smashed my screen and have loads of files on my hard drive mainly music and pictures, how will i be able to get them all of on to another computer?

    Thanks

  • buy a portable hard drive case for a laptop drive off ebay then put the drive in it connect it to a pc via usb or a laptop via usb and transfer your stuff off

  • heeyyy,,,

my dell laptop doens't start up.

After a few seconds there apears a screen with

    "cant locate intern hard drive"

if I do this what the video shows, would my pc work back?

    soryy for my english

  • you will need to install the operating system on the laptop. without the OS (windows) your laptop wont work. i think you just insert the os disc and press either F12 F8 or F2 then choose boot from cd/dvd drive.

  • the OS is already installed on my hard drive. So i schould be working. But i think mu problem is solved. thank you

  • I Have A DELL INSPIRON 6000 AND IT WILL NOT BOOT UP, IT SAYS IT IS UNABLE TO FIND MY HDD. I HAVE NOTHING ON MY ORIGINAL HDD SO IF I DO THIS I CAN JUST START OVER.

  • is your hdd ide or sata?

  • @robgroove Hi Rob, thanks for the video, it was very helpful however, I get a similar error message as others here... "Primary Hard Drive" not found. I'm replacing the OEM HD on an Insperion 600m with a 320gb PATA.

  • Nice vid but I would suggest to many that its better to not change ur hard drive while standing on any type of carpet.

  • does this apply for IDE or Sata???

  • Thanks Rob was helpful.

  • Thanks a bunch. This was the first time I ever did this and I'm so glad it was simple. Thanks for sharing

  • tanks a lot friend, wher u live at?

  • United Kingdom

  • Nice video dude!! Thanks!! I really need it :)

  • where you buy the hard drive?

  • many places including ebay and most computer company websites

  • Would you suggest using latex gloves?

  • excellent idea if you are comfortable working with them!

  • Thanks for the information.

  • I just bought a new hard drive to my laptop cuz on my old hard drive I had like 990 trojans =)

I'll buy windows xp and I know how to install it/configure it from the boot screen but what if the screen turns white like another guy noticed on one of the comments down below?

  • but the hdd is working on different notebook but not on dell latitude .

  • i have new hdd , i install operating system

and when i turn on my notebook ,it's turn "white" and says i need id and drivers.

but i don't know what drivers i need.

  • how do you get all the windows programs and os on the new hard drive

  • most of the time when you buy the pc they come with all drivers and a OS cd. If not u can pay some one to do it, or just buy an OS on ebay...

  • song?

  • I have this laptop, if you upgrade the HD will you lose microsoft word (office) i bought it seperatly in the box and have used all the installationsm, please respond

  • most of the time if not always you lose OS and any other previous programs...

  • Very helpful, thanks

  • I am happy you made the video but all I see is a black area for the bottom of your computer mine is also a dell and I am looking for the harddrive. Your lighting is dark

  • where'd you buy the hard drive? cuz i know dell makes you order most of their stuff. but is there a place to buy them like?? best buy or walmart?

  • they call me eye candy

  • Good video. I have to send in my dell to replace my damaged screen and I have to remove my hard drive before I ship. I never went inside my laptop before so this helps! Thanks.

  • I think it was great that you did a video on this, but you left out the part about removing the attachment that covers the pins from your old hard drive and putting it on the new hard drive. I have a inspiron 6000 which has a tray for the hard drive. Apparently the part that fits over the pins varies. A clearer picture of this would help along with the mention of the variation in the hard drive enclosures.

  • hi mate, I'm trying to fix my laptop at the moment. I don't know much about it but your vid id helping. Basically my laptop won't start up, it just stays in the page that says starting windows. So I'm thinking if I remove the hard drive I can save my data, is that true? I have a desktop computer so do you know of a way to sort of connect the hard drive to the computer? I've been checking the net and I think I need an enclosure with USB interface. Any tips or advice? thanks

  • Hi,

That was a great help video.

BTW, I have an Inspiron 640m which came with an 80 GB HDD. Now, I want to upgrade it with "Western Digital WD3200BEVT 320GB SATA300 5400RPM Scorpio 2.5-inch Notebook Hard Drive". Can someone tell me if this HDD is compatible with Inspiron 640m?

  • Hey xdev,

Yea the WD drive should fit fine.. as long as your original drive is sata..

(but dont blame me if ti dosnt work :p)

  • thanks man. i can mess around wiht a desktop computer, but i dont know crap about laptops.

  • Hey, ive got the inspiron 6000, i guess the two are very similar.

Did your laptop have a SATA or IDE connector?

  • SATA

  • I knew how to take it out but i didnt know that you can remove the black plastic part!! Thank you SO much for the info!!!

  • Thanks for telling us, my hard drive just commited suicide on my laptop and I need to replace it.

  • anyone know what the song is at the begging

  • sweetest girl - wycleff

  • nice bro

  • how do i know what hard drive is compatible with my laptop?

  • research it on ebay.

or you could look at the specs of your current hard drive and get the same only the size you want on the new one.

  • be better if you gave some advice on how to backup data before changing discs, or I guess if it crashed, it won't make any difference!

  • five stars

  • Thanks Robgroove. You saved me alot in computer repair. Do you know anything about 1973 AMC Javelin transmission?

  • nice
