He instructed the Englishman, Thorold Dickerson, that after the formal part of the test in costume and make-up, Hepburn should change into her own clothes and be informally interviewed about her own life. She was not to know the camera was still running; and she didn't. You see her career starting.

And the idea behind this interview was to get Hepburn more comfortable and relaxed because until then she had only done stage work was was really uncomfortable in front of the cameras- as soon as they told her the cameras were off though her personality and charm came out completely just as they thought it would. I'd find it hard to explain his reasons for doing this except to say that there was once a belief that an artist or performer would be better able to play a part if they had some emotional depths to plow when acting. This idea would be as alien to modern day Hollywood as the code duello is to contemporary warfare.
