The NWA was Territory modeled back then. Until everyones favorite Mafia Clown Vince Mcmahon used his communist authority to destroy everyone and everything
Nothing like hearing the West Coast Tag Team Champions from California talking like they were from the Carolinas. Give Gary Royal and George South credit: they would put anybody over, even Steve Reese, Crazy Horse, Nacho Barrera, Jake Milliman, Mario Mancini and Frank Williams.
Any guesses who the Gladiators were? Great gag and funny that no one ever saw them before...or after their first big TV match. GREAT TV. Had a similar one happen on Pittsburgh TV one night (by accident). George "The Animal" Steele vs perennial jobber Frank Holtz for remaining TV time. Steele was working the crowd when the bell rang and Holtz knocked him headfirst (legit) into the ring post. Steele went down and show ended with Holtz kicking the sh*t out of him. No comeback for George!
At one house show in Anderson, SC, I heard that The Mulkeys faced The Midnight Express at the Westside High gym and that Ricky Morton was the special referee.
It’s obvious that this was scripted to provide some legitimacy for the Mulkeys being in the Crocket Cup. But I’d like to know, was the Gladiators an actual tag team and were they the “West Coast Champions”?
Nonetheless, great angle! I remember cheering for the Mulkeys after watching this.
@mickdundee1973 Gary Royal and George South were tag team partners for several years, so yes they were a real team, but the Gladiators was just one of their gimmicks. If you watched JCP in 87-88 you might remember the Cruel Connection and Mexican Twin Devils; they played those teams too. In fact, JCP often booked them for three matches a night, one per costume. They saved money that way by not having to hire as many jobbers. Calling them "West Coast Champs" was just to help put the Mulkeys over.
@gladfan1989 FLUKE? FLUKE? The Gladiators proved they were who we thought they were! Did you see the strength that the Mulkey's showed in controlling the Gladiators? This was obvious something they had worked on and studied- they knew the Gladiators every tendancy and at the exact moment POW! The Excellence of Execution is what I say, MULKEYS- 4 LIFE!
Aw, this video doesn't include the post-match interview with the Gladiators also. They wanted a rematch and threatened a feud with The Mulkeys if I remember right. All I remember is that it made me laugh that those 2 masked losers were actually trying to start a feud with 2 of the biggest jobbers in WCW. Yeah like that rivalry would've sold out Starcade or The Great American Bash. XD
That was the first and only time that I ever heard them talk with David Crockett in the 2 years they competed in wrestling matches on TBS in Atlanta! Right after they won the match. They were always wrestling and lost matches. Randy's screams in the ring after being mashed by big wrestlers was too obvious. This was a good motivation factor to get them into that Jim Crockett Sr. memorial cup in 1987! And their opponents were the same weight as them!
I remember the albino assasins aka the mulkey's. I'm pretty sure this isn't there only win. Didn't they beat the tag champs somehow or another once in a non title or some such thing. I know they were jobbers and never expected anything else from them but it seems they beat a real name team once perhaps it was the midnight express? I do remember a few years back seeing one of them credited in a movie tho. lol they just don't make wrestlers like this anymore, not sure if that's a good or bad thing
@Fektthis They didn't beat the Midnight Express, but they did headline against them in their hometown at the high school gym. From what I've heard, the place was packed and the crowd was hot. They were totally behind their homeboys, the Mulkeys, and the Midnights gave them a great match, making the crowd believe the Mulkeys could beat them. Besides this TV win against the "West Coast Champs", that was their biggest moment.
The ironic thing about this.... it was the final time that Randy and Bill appeared together as a tag-team on the Superstation. They went to the Crockett Cup and lost and that was it...no more Mulkeys on Superchannel 17 ever again. I think that the Mulkeys were the greatest jobbers of all time. They took the biggest bumps ever. Randy Hogan was great but he didn't have the staying power that Randy and Bill had. Excellent upload.
Thanks for posting this. I remember Crockett & Schiavone had been hyping up The Gladiators for weeks. I thought they were going to be a Road Warrior type tag team. As someone posted earlier, in the unedited version, The Gladiators theme song was War Machine. I could be mistaken, but I believe that The Gladiators were another brother tag team- The Mod Squad.
I remeber this like it was yesterday! all day long they were hyping these gladiators and then they end up losing to the mulkeys. i bet they got laid after this
I cannot believe you cut out the HILARIOUS post match yelling fest with the 'Gladiators'
-their masks fit so bad and they were yelling so much, the masks kept slipping over their mouths making them madder and the whole thing funnier! I thought I would die laughing when I saw that the first time! lol Post that by itself if you can!
What a easy simple setup that took all of a minute and a half with a couple of guys out the back with a mask that turn a couple of jobbers like the Mulkeys in to gold if only for a little wile, funny as hell you see WWE thats how you get more for less.
I remember seeing the Mulkeys getting appallingly abused and mauled by Vicious/Vader tag team...and finished off with a powerbomb on the stretcher they were carried out on...too damn funny. A really imaginative use of violence. Too funny. Used to love this show on TBS, made time every week for it...awesome stuff.
I remember this. The way they were building up the Gladiators at the time I was expecting two huge, sculpted powerhouses. Then they pulled out two average guys in blue full-body tights and masks who promptly lost to the MULKEYS?? Even the Mulkeys couldn't believe it.
I remember the Gladiators were the last seed in the Crockett Cup that year. The Mulkeys replaced them in the tournament by way of this win. One of the most unexpected victories ever!
This was like watching a Championship match! Seeing two hard working jobbers like Randy and Bill Mulkey get their first and only win was one of the best moments in NWA Pro Wrestling history! Thanks for the memories!
