haha this reminds me so much of my dads truck its not even funny!!! its almost exact of wat he created! i rlly hope the government lets you guys expose those more out to the world and hopefully everyone will have one in the near future! great job!
greetings oldplaner..congratulations on building a fantastic woodgas genny i can follow all your work but am lost with the condensate bit??? does condensation/tar stick to the sides then fall through to the condensate tank?...then why two pipes under the tank ive spent many hours on your forest site and here but still cant figure it out....i wish you and your family a happy christmas from the U.K.
The technology is very old, from around 1839 and many countries including Germany,Scandanavia,Japan and New Zealand have used wood and charcoal gas to run IC engines.
on planet mechanics the emmision testing showed 50% reduction in co2 and zero carbon and sulfer compared to the gasoline. it runs on the hydrogen gas the burning wood creates. coal i think would creat hydrogen, but what about the nasty sulfer?
i thought by myself OMFG freaking amazing, so now is started to look around the web and here too, because this is so ecological and awesome too, man your'e good at building and at being good for the environment, there is nothing wrong with being good to the environment actually it is just the badder being bad for it, so my greatest compliments for you mate. now i already know that when i get my drivers license im going to build a car just like this one, hell yeah!
hello om a 15 year old boy, i saw this one program on tv on national geographic. where on the program planet mechanics two guys built a truck just like this one totally running on woodgas, and im not joking my heart skipped a beat when i saw it firing up,
If this works with wood, it would work even better with coke or coal.
Hey Chevy, Chrysler and Ford, Why can't one of you big three market an affordable Duel Fuel, Wood Gas Truck? It would be a hit among independent rural white folk, and it would sell better then the hybrid. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Impressive! This country was actually built by truly independent people, such as yourself. It's time we started getting back to basics! And this is a great example of doing just that, but using a high tech method. Great work!

oh yeah...the swedes had a shortage of gas during ww2 so they came up with this idea(or at least utilized it). pretty cool!

hydrogen IS extracted from coal. (steam reformation of coal)
peace :)

What issue of Mother Earth News was this design from?

have you had this truck tested for emissions while running on wood gas? i think it would be very interesting to have those results.

ER, no! The wood is heated and produces the gas. Coke or coal is used to create the heat, it wont create the gas that the the engine runs on.
stwright 3 years ago
I disagree.
Coal and coke emit combustible gases just the same as wood (or any other combustible material) when heated to ignition temperatures.
The oxygen starved environment in a wood gas furnace would work the same with coal or coke.
Although the furnace may require some modifications to accommodate coal.
The energy yield of coal and coke is greater then wood, although they would probably emit more tar and sulphur that must be filtered.

As the Federal Reserve and government debase our dollar making gas unfordable, It may pay to retrofit a spare vehicle to run on WoodGas.

fantastic design. Thanks for helping illuminate !

dont you have to cool the wood gas ?
aflacduky 3 years ago
Yes,the cooler is the tank on the passenger side with the Blue lid.
There is a video here that shows it's construction.

I meant to say low tech, but still - it's all kinda subjective.
I can tell a lot of hours went into building this. You should be proud!
