I had as 85 century with the 3.8 MPFI(vin code 3) that car ran great and people didn't believe me that they put the 3.8 in these year centurys (84-88)
david composite upper intake manifold but timing is a very good steel gears on cam and crank. no aluminum. and upper timing sprocket is cam.sorry. and its a very durable design.
These have a one-piece cast aluminum intake until end of 91 at least.
Also, the steel upper sprocket didn't come out until 89 when the 3800 came out with the balance shaft. Up to that point, they had the plastic/ aluminum setup.
All the engines can be retrofitted to an all-steel timing set. Highly recommended.
dang!! i got an 88 olds with the gen 1 3.8. unfortunately the timing chain somehow grinded lff the teeth on the cam gear and is sitting gathering dust @ the moment. id love to build that up
@tetra021 That happened to my first car an 88 bonneville; cost 2k to fix, but I used to race V6 camaros with it and win. That was my dumbass kid period. :)

Yep they did! They are a torquey engine, for sure. That's the same engine I have here. Did you see the build page on car domain?

Yes those had a very bad design plastic/ aluminum upper timing sprocket.
Check your PMs I sent a link to a repair I'm doing on one of them.
