The reason for this misunderstanding is that both Holland provinces were and are the most economically thriving provinces. So internationally, any traders people encountered were most likely from Holland and therefore assumed the Netherlands and Holland to be the same.

Calling the inhabitants Dutch and having a neighbouring country called Deutschland (Germany) with its inhabitants Deutscher (Germans) doesn't make it easier. :-)

There are a total of 12 provinces in the Netherlands of which one is called North-Holland (with Amsterdam) and one is called South-Holland (with Rotterdam and the Hague).

Saying that anyone from another province is from Holland is like saying a Scot is English. No, he's from Great Britain! In the Netherlands, the animosity is not as large as between Scots and English, but some might correct you.
