I don't think the show went downhill after Tom showed up. Of course, I only started watching after "Dye! Dye! My Darling!" And Glenn Eichler had said that Daria and Trent were never going to be together. So I guess if he said that, then we should accept it.

I hated Tom. I thought he was boring and kinda arrogant and pretentious. I never thought Trent and Daria would get together because she had a lot of drive and accepted responsibility... But I d not think Tom was a good bf or (more importantly) a good character...

@franknfurter75 Agreed. Tom is so terribly wooden, whereas Trent was interesting, if a bit lazy. Plus I really hated seeing Daria and Jane argue.

I respectfully disagree with Tom leading to the shows demise, but he should not have replaced Trent as Daria's love interest. I think it would have been better if Daria hooked up with one of the three J's and eventually seducing each one into making Quinn's life a living hell. Cuz some of the funniest parts in this show are where Daria pwns Quinn then Quinn begging Daria for help a couple scenes later. They could have done an entire season on that IMO.

I can't decide if Tom really made Daria come into its own as a show...or make it jump the shark, lol. Introducing a new character, especially one that screws with the protagonists, is always a dicey move.

There's a theory that back while the show was being played on MTV, a rumour was spreading that Daria and Jane were practically a lesbian couple...the "Bert and Ernie" issue. The show's creators were offended by this and wrote Tom into the show for the exclusive effect of heterosexualizing Jane and Daria.

End of Season four in Dye Dye my Darling, though through out the end of season four it shows that they are becoming closer.

it was a progressive thing, starts in "I loathe a parade" and continues in "Fire!" until they kiss in "Dye, dye my darling" creating a rift in Daria's and Jane's friendship, And then it "Is it fall yet" you can see how the whole thing ended up.
