@xXxbutterjellyxXx Glad you're doing well with 2-beats. Just keeping at 3 beat weaves....they do take some practice till your mind can grasp exactly how they work. Concentrate on the number of spins on each side (two on the opposite side, one on the same side) for each hand. Also, it just feels kinda like you're braiding....always going over the top and across (well, for forward weaves). Practice slow and keep at it! I'm sure you'll be there soon!
@CamonBro LOL....yeah, that can happen. Practice carefully and SLOWLY. Slow speeds give you more time to react and also produce more effective muscle memory.
tank you! and haha the 1st one that tell abouth injuries!
i'm here from 4 hours ago and i followed the tutorial from nickcanpoi but i got stuck.. everytime i stop and make the pois rotate... now i'm trying to emulate the hands movement and seems working... if i stant to think abouth 2 circles left, one right i make all wrong... have u gotta some tips for me? [i can do the 2 beat, butterfly, split time butterfly and derivates]
@dallatorretdu The 'two rotations opposite side and one rotation same side' is more of something to check once you think you're doing it to make sure you are actually doing it right. My main suggestion to getting this down is to focus on the hand movements. 2 beats, you always lead with one hand and that hand stays on top. For 3 beat weaves, you alternate which hand leads/is on top. Forward 3 beat, you will bring the bottom hand over the top on each side. Reverse= top hand to bottom.
@dallatorretdu (Part II) Another exercise you can try with one hand is to hold one arm straight out in front of you (with no poi). Take the other hand (with poi) and spin one rotation on its same side....then cross over to the new side going OVER the arm your holding out. Do one rotation there, then when the poi comes around, switch your hand to UNDER the arm and do another rotation there. After that rotation cross back over to the same side. This is basically the hand motions of the 3 beat
@dallatorretdu (part III) but only with one hand spinning. Practice that with both hands independently and then you can start to put it all together into the real 3 beat.
Another suggestion is to learn the 2 beat (start with forward) with EITHER hand on top. Usually, we learn to do it leading with one particular hand and only ever do it this way. Be sure to learn to lead with the OTHER hand (leading hand always on top). Once you know both of these, the 3 beat is basically combining these.
@ReyRunTiger Awesome! Make sure you take the time to be sure you can do both versions of split time 2 beat weaves as well (there are two versions for forward and two for reverse) as these are helpful for other moves later in your progression. Best of luck!
@sl0wm03 Well, I wouldn't say either is 'easier' because the moves are the same. Sock poi have the advantage of being able to spin slower (due to the extra mass/momentum) which gives you more time to make the hand movements or react if they tangle to prevent painful impacts with certain sensitive areas LOL. I think poi are more advantageous to learn with for several reasons, but overall, it's just preference. The moves are the same.
Good video dude but I'm having some trouble. I can do the weave with one hand or the other no problem and can do 2 beat weave very fast but switching to 3 beat is giving me problems, probably because I started doing that first.
I have tried just practicing with one poi and just practicing the hand movements but no luck, is it just a matter of lots of practice or is there some trick someone who can do 2 beat weave very easily could use?
First off, slow down. Speed increases pain when you make mistakes, decreases effective muscle memory and gives you less time to make the correct hand movements. Spin as slow as you can while keeping them in motion. Many people have said (and I agree) if you cannot do a move slow, you cannot really do it.
Beyond that, from forward 2 beat, figure out which hand you are leading with (it will always be on top and change to the new side first). If you lead with your L, when on the R side>
When on the R side, keep the L hand on that side instead of changing sides. Do an extra rotation with it and while that's happening, take the R hand from beneath and bring it over the top and cross to the L side. Follow with the L hand. Now you're leading with the R hand, so on the L side, keep the R hand there for an extra rotation while bringing the L hand from beneath over the R hand to cross to the R side.
An exercise that may help is to hold one arm outstretched zombie style without a glowstick/poi in that hand. Then spin with only the other hand. Spin ONE rotation on the side that has the glowstick/poi and then cross to the other side, do ONE rotation ABOVE the outheld wrist, then immediately after, do ONE rotation BELOW that wrist. Cross back to the other side to do one rotation here (that last rotation is the beginning of the cycle of 3 spins for the move). Repeat with either hand
Basically, it's kinda like braiding. You're always taking the bottom hand across the top and toward the center (opposite side really) and the other hand follows. The pattern is always (for forward 3 beat): bring bottom hand to top and cross with it to the opposite side, follow with the other hand (repeat on other side).
Hopefully something in that novel is helpful LOL. Sorry, I'm kinda wordy.
haha i just took forever trying to just watch normal glowstringing videos trying to teach myself and i succeeded but i wish i would have found this so i could have learned faster haha but one question!!, why the f are you using socks with tenis balls hahahaha lol
They're called 'sock poi.' They are advantageous over glowsticks for many reasons: more mass>>more momentum, so you can spin slower, generally less painful, momentum aides in learning certain moves such as BTB weaves, weight makes isolations & stalls easier, better feel, improved contrast for video making, more mass aides in more effective muscle memory, white socks are UV-reactive (dead glowsticks are not), UNBREAKABLE! etc etc etc.
I'm not against glowsticking, by any means...been doing that longer than poi, but sock poi are THE BEST practice set....period. Nothing else aides a spinner in so many ways as sock poi do. If you're learning wraps, glowsticks are best, but for spinning moves/isolations/stalls, sock poi are superior. Once you learn with the socks, you can easily apply the moves to glowsticks. One of the main reasons I used sock poi in the video is simply that they show up far better than glowsticks.
Yeah, you can definitely do these with double hoop. I'm am terrible at hoop, so I can't give you specific details, but the hand motions should be the same.
That's an isolated reverse 3 beat weave. Kinda tricky, but very fun. I do have a tutorial for isolations. Isolating a weave is just a matter of applying those concepts to the 3 beat weave.
best part about doing weaves was the fact that I didnt start with sock's i used glowsticks so I learned fast for timing being destroroyed by ur poi is part of it
Well, glowsticks or poi, it's the SAME move. I feel poi is superior to glowsticks in learning and solidifying these moves simply because the brain programs the memory of the poi weight more effectively into the cerebellum than glowsticks.
aye I totaly agree I only use socks now + its a hell of alot cheaper to use socks + if you want to advance to fire/sparkle you have somewhat of a close weight with socks so it dosnt look sloppy
Yeah, a direct transition from glowsticks to fire poi would be a TERRIBLE idea IMO. You have to do poi first for some time to get used to the weight difference. Once you learn things with poi it's easy to transition it to glowsticks or fire poi. And contrary to what some people think, having the GLOW of glowsticks does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help in your practicing. You can visualize planes/moves MUCH better with sock poi and a mirror.
heh.... well I learned planes the stupid way when I 1st started lol I diped my strings in the glowstick glow ( cracked one open on my head when i screwed up) and then I could see the glow I wouldnt really recomend this thou lol.... anyway thanks for the totorial I didnt see a flower totorial in your list do you have one ?
LOL it's all good. I knew what you meant. I am a classically trained musician. I used to play piano as a kid, played viola for 9 years and was in choir for 6 years. So yeah....I gotcha!
Oh, I've spun glowsticks for years. I use sock poi more than glowsticks because I like the weight of poi much better than glowsticks. I also find the sock poi are MUCH easier to see for tutorial purposes than glowstick strings so you can visualize what I am doing. I'm not just using sock poi cause I don't know how to get glowsticks....I just prefer poi to glowsticks, that's all and it's better for tutorials.
ive got the 2 beat down pat, its the 3 beat im having trouble with. and the reverse 2 beat always hits me on the head, or face.. i just cant seem to make it move to the left side of my body lolz, thanks for the tutorial btw. its awesome and informative.. XD
Well, just trying to do the best I can. I never know whether my explanations are confusing or helpful. Glad I could help you with this!! ENJOY YOUR WEAVING!
Ahhhh! I've been trying to do this for two days and i cant even get the two-beat down... I can get the motions one-handedly and I can cross-over like jumprope and I can do it with glowstrings. But I cant get the weaves like I can't do a 2-beat or 3-beat. I just can't connect the left side to the right side of my brain and Then they get confused =/
Yep....just a basic sock poi set. Mine are just socks with baseballs in them, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend the baseballs for beginners. You can make a nice set with either tennis balls or baggies with a cup or so of rice. Either of these options will be more kind to your body if you should make a mistake.
This is the 1st video that I looked at that actually helped me with the two beat weave.
I'm still confused about the three beat weave.
