Thanks a lot MondAgave! We have no trailer here in my Homeland's Filmclub, so I can show my partners THE Original Carpenter-ArtMovie! Yes, it's a bit old, sometimes awkward BUT it is History now.
@fizetr Dan O' Bannon is Pinback, the guy with the beard. :) ... O' Bannon is the one who feeds the alien and then fights with him. Look at 0:16, 0:23, 1:47, 1:56 and 2:07.
"[Dark Star] O'Bannon was along, serving in a number of capacities, including scripting, editing and acting as one of the leading roles (Pinback)"
"Together with Ronald Shusett, he wrote the original story for Alien (1979) [...]"
Look at the Internet to learn more about him (Wikipedia, ...)
Never could understand why they didn't just leave the uninhabitable or dangerous planets alone. Just friggin' leave em and move on to colonizing the good ones bitches!
I saw this movie in the theatre when I was10 yrs. old. I liked it, understood it, and I have stumped so many people when having a trivia contest when i would ask them to name huey, dewey, and louey that weren't ducks. NO ONE ever knew the answer , but we do!
And, in reply to all the replies and msgs I've got from this... "Alien" featured a ship with people trapped on board with an alien... That doesn't make it a fucking "remake" of Dark Star. Get a life.
@UncleFexxer It was written by the same guy because he was unhappy with how Dark Star turned out so he tweaked the script and sold it to Ridley Scott. So it's basically a remake.
@UncleFexxer Dan O'Bannon (writer of dark Star) was so dissatisfied with his first feature film being made with a beach ball that he re-wrote (with the help of Ronald Shusett, admittedly) it hoping to make something to be taken more seriously. The out come was Ridley Scott's Alien. So it could be seen as a re-make.
o'bannon wrote alien, the guys a genius......carpenter said of this movie"it was a childish dream,i was idealistic,it just dident work", but for countless people it does work, even with the cardbord walls, the humor of the script pushes it through to the inevitable end.......a true cult movie.
ha ha, great...too bad this never got bigger. If only man was to be a universal force, eh? Hm, Seems like far too many of its constituents are far too conservative in their viesws of how things ought to be done. Plz, mssg me back. I am interested in learning of some of the classics like this one.

hi darkstar nerds i need ur help answering this riddle since ive never seen the movie maybe u might knowhear it is
The answer is not simple, and the question has already been asked. Clues: 1. This clip from darkstar 2. This article on quantum theory 3. This article on time dilation 3. It is 3 words. 4. The first word starts with a "w".
They were at USC and proved a sci fic and its special effects could be done on a small budget---came out in the late 1970s....very funny! Pinbeck, the Beachball "Alien" and of course "SMART BOMB"; "I EXIST THEREFORE I AM"
This was a huge influence on Rob Grant and Doug Naylor when they were writing Red Dwarf. That fact alone makes this film a classic. Carpenter is a genius.
all the making of an adventure porno in space.. join dick dansette and sheila longthroat as they !!try to save mankind!! for fuck sake what was the budget for this?? a video camera twenty quid??
@dirkwang1 "for fuck sake what was the budget for this?? a video camera twenty quid??" This was a college student project done for $60,000 (which would hardly pay for lunch on a big budget Hollywood film). Given that it was the first movie by a couple of kids with no money, I think it's brilliant.
check it out, the trailer isnt great its actually both quite deep phycologically, and also sort of tounge in cheek am i supposed to be laughing humour, its intended, difficult to explain, but damn fine film.
Just watched it for the 1st time. The movie is awesome. The story is brilliant and the direction is top. I did not know it is from the same guy who made ''The Thing''. That movie is the reference in horror movies..
Holy fuck... Awhile back I watched the "dark space - bomb 20" video on youtube and was blown away. I was thinking for myself "This must be a sequel to 2001" then I found 2010... and it sucked.
After that failure I stopped wondering about it.
Today I looked up John Carpenter's movies and saw the trailer for this movie. It first seamed like a 2001 rip of with bad editing and budget (if you compare the two). But is seams to be a 2001 parody and I recognised it a bit.
You don't know what you're missing but this movie is so hard to find. I am lucky enough to own the full version, only on VHS, I should add. There is a DVD/laserdisc version but all the best funny parts are cut out!
Ha haha I saw this when it came out. Even used the title as my CD handle for a while. Very fun!! It sucks you in with apparent logic and then firmly plants, tongue in cheek. It runs the gamut of emotions, one member of the crew in cryo-freeze but still sadly aware. An omnipotent bomb, and a crew on the edge of losing it big time. I'm buying the DVD, right now. Light one up.
This is one of my favorite movies ever. Dan O'Bannon (co-writer and the guy who played Pinback) also wrote the script for "Return of the Living Dead" and you can really see his sense of humor shine through. The low-budget cheesiness actually made it a lot funnier.
What sickens and chills me is the certainty that eventually some money-grubbing, creatively bankrupt Hollywood douchebag like Michael Bay is going to eventually make a bazillion-dollar remake of this and it will suck ass.
@UncleFexxer And if he,or anyone else ever did, there's a very good chance it'd bomb---I mean, out of all the remakes, even of ultra-obscure flicks, how many of them have been hits?
@UncleFexxer that's impossible. Michael Bay doesnt know any good movies!! so he will never touch Dark Star nor any of John Carpenter's, David Lynch's or David Croenenberg's movies ever!
@tool619 He won't touch Lynch. Maybe Cronenberg, but it's only a matter of time before his production company, Platinum Dunes remakes every film ever made. They even have plans to remake Rosemary's Baby, and Carpenter's Halloween was already remade by Rob Zombie.
Dunes and Bay are like crazed sexual predators, raping every classic that they can lay their dickbeating hands on. Of course Bay only funds shitty remakes to make his own films look like the works of David Lean and for money. The cunt.
In the making of doc of Alien, the writer (I think) actually says that this his own first film and Alien was a remake of Darkstar played for shocks instead of laughs (and abit more cash cos the studio saw the success of starwars and wanted a space movie of their own).
Hey big O, I got the DVD some time ago, maybe I lucked out, it says it has the Theatrical Release & the Special Edition, and on the back it says, deleted scenes in the Special Ed. version may present a momentary pause during playback. So I'm taking that to mean, the put the deleted scenes in this version. And remember, 'they're not Lost in Space, they're LOOSE. hahahaha
" Dark Star" is one of my favorite movies! I saw it in the 80's and thought it was hilarious. I know it was a student thesis, and the fact that it was so low budget only added to the comedy. Especially the muffin tin Talby wears as part of his space suit. I was lucky to find a mint copy of the vinyl LP.
Dark Star was originally a student film by John Carpenter and Dan O'bannon, which is why it was so low budget. It was shown at festivals and gained funding for some additional footage to be produced. It's a really fun/clever film, actually, and you'll see where a lot of major films (like ALiens) actually got their ideas from.
i loved it, i really did! my brother showed me dark star when i was about 9 or something and it totally thrilled me.. i think, i'm one of the few people that cried at the end of it! ;) i wish, i could see the movie again, i've been searching for it for years now!
Notice that this trailer actually makes the movie look serious. Thankfully, it's a satire that is extremely funny (even despite its existential elements). Dan O'Bannon surely knew that if he took this subplot and made it serious and horrific, that he'd have a winner, and so there's your "Alien".
O_O so the director of alien got the idiea from this movie? i dont know how he got it from a rated G movie and turned his in to a rated R kinda weird how he got the idiea from this movie no gore no blood no swear words.
I recall this movie was released in what I percieved as a lull between the space-race fifties and sixties, and the unprecedented success of "Star Wars" and "Alien." I may have been reading something into it, but I also remember thinking it was a commentary on the day-to-day life of Vietnam combatants.
This is definitely the beginning of the Space Trucker genre.

I recall this movie was released in what I percieved as a lull between the space-race fifties and sixties, and the unprecedented success of "Star Wars" and "Alien." I may have been reading something into it, but I also remember thinking it was a commentary on the day-to-day life of Vietnam combatants.
