  • This is definitely the beginning of the Space Trucker genre.

  • Rated: G?

  • I seriously need to watch this film now...

  • dr karl sent me

  • Best Collage film Ever!!!!

  • 0:57 Did he say, "Back home in Naboo"?

  • @Erikannen he said Malibu

  • Thanks a lot MondAgave! We have no trailer here in my Homeland's Filmclub, so I can show my partners THE Original Carpenter-ArtMovie! Yes, it's a bit old, sometimes awkward BUT it is History now.

  • Who's O'bannon?

  • @fizetr Dan O' Bannon is Pinback, the guy with the beard. :) ... O' Bannon is the one who feeds the alien and then fights with him. Look at 0:16, 0:23, 1:47, 1:56 and 2:07.

"[Dark Star] O'Bannon was along, serving in a number of capacities, including scripting, editing and acting as one of the leading roles (Pinback)"

"Together with Ronald Shusett, he wrote the original story for Alien (1979) [...]"

Look at the Internet to learn more about him (Wikipedia, ...)

  • I remember this when i was a little kid, It was maybe 1976... I was blown away

  • Never could understand why they didn't just leave the uninhabitable or dangerous planets alone. Just friggin' leave em and move on to colonizing the good ones bitches!

  • @dewfall56 that wouldnt make a very good movie tho

  • @dazdogman details, details...

  • Ha!! MInd melting "excitment". Doesn't look like that from the trailer :P

  • Hello People,

thanks for the many good comments.

I am pleased to have made you a joyous.

  • this is a very very VERY odd film

    Funny but awkward

  • @kea919306 It is a first draft of Alien.

  • Not bad for a 60 000 dollar budget in 1974.

  • Jeez, if that's the actual trailer that played when the movie was released then it sure spoils a lot of things (and jokes).

  • i actually feed off films like this

  • lol

  • This was a Golden Age of movies when Dan O' Bannon and John Carpenter were in their prime.

  • The beginning of this trailer, sounds like a cheap science fiction movie.

  • @lenton456 Yes. An ultra-cheap movie but brilliant. You won't be disappointed. Just avoid the cut DVD version if possible.

  • @lenton456 - it's supposed to!

  • @lenton456 well, this is a cheap science fiction movie, so...

  • thats happen when you send stupid hippies to the space

  • "They are not lost in space, they are loose." Pff! That comment made me spit out my breakfast cerial.

  • my dad told me about this movie then later on I rented it and thought it was interesting

  • I saw this movie in the theatre when I was10 yrs. old. I liked it, understood it, and I have stumped so many people when having a trivia contest when i would ask them to name huey, dewey, and louey that weren't ducks. NO ONE ever knew the answer , but we do!

  • @po2bhappy Aren't you thinking of Silent Running?

  • Classic sci-fi dark comedy. This film is very entertaining.

  • Michael Bay has signed up Nicholas Cage to play the spacehopper

  • what the #### rated G?

  • @mike90n= Yeah, weird isn't it? It would probably get a pg or a pg-13 today.

  • I hate it when my beach ball attacks me.

  • And, in reply to all the replies and msgs I've got from this... "Alien" featured a ship with people trapped on board with an alien... That doesn't make it a fucking "remake" of Dark Star. Get a life.

  • @UncleFexxer It was written by the same guy because he was unhappy with how Dark Star turned out so he tweaked the script and sold it to Ridley Scott. So it's basically a remake.

  • @UncleFexxer Dan O'Bannon (writer of dark Star) was so dissatisfied with his first feature film being made with a beach ball that he re-wrote (with the help of Ronald Shusett, admittedly) it hoping to make something to be taken more seriously. The out come was Ridley Scott's Alien. So it could be seen as a re-make.

  • who the fuck could have voted this negatively?

  • @sidaharta 5 People

  • looks like me and my friends gotta make a new name for the project we're making! FUUUUUUCCCKKKK!!!!!

  • "They're not lost in space - they're...loose." LOLOLOLOL

  • best sci fi flicks ever!!!!! :-D

  • this movie teach us that Dodgers will be break up.

  • i confused this movie with 2001: space odyssey orz

  • o'bannon wrote alien, the guys a genius......carpenter said of this movie"it was a childish dream,i was idealistic,it just dident work", but for countless people it does work, even with the cardbord walls, the humor of the script pushes it through to the inevitable end.......a true cult movie.

  • ha ha, great...too bad this never got bigger. If only man was to be a universal force, eh? Hm, Seems like far too many of its constituents are far too conservative in their viesws of how things ought to be done. Plz, mssg me back. I am interested in learning of some of the classics like this one.

  • what year does this take place

  • That bomb is HALs bastard child ... I swear.

  • Let there be light.

  • Teach it phenomenology...

  • RIP Dan

  • This movie is what later inspired "Red Dwarf"

  • @1965ismaninblack

Oh yeah, the radiation leak that killed Commander powell. He was awesome, who would think of having a talking Ice cube as a captain.

  • is the space hopper auditioning for any new roles? iam needing a replacement for spartacus , ive seen the space hopper fighting with a trident brush, and could use him in the part .

  • the space hopper should have been nominated for an oscar!

  • do you want get on the Dark star?

  • i really loved the forklift truck in the corridor and the plank on the floor shit i know but it works!

  • It inspired O'Bannon to write the scenario of the first "Alien"... A classic !

  • I love this movie

  • Bombed out in Space with a spaced-out bomb.

  • That movie looks realy crappy... I think I'm gonna pick it up.

  • hi darkstar nerds i need ur help answering this riddle since ive never seen the movie maybe u might knowhear it is

The answer is not simple, and the question has already been asked. Clues: 1. This clip from darkstar 2. This article on quantum theory 3. This article on time dilation 3. It is 3 words. 4. The first word starts with a "w".

  • I need a clue from this in laci greens live stream please respond to this

  • @SuperZuazua yeah me 2

  • One million light years from earth? That's halfway to the Andromedia Galaxy! Even Captain Kirk could not reach that far. :-D

  • Sounds like BoC has sampled a lot from this movie. Sweeeeet!

  • One of many movies that ran during the 70's midnight Drive In Theatre's..

You really didn't care about the movie, and it didn't matter..

  • They were at USC and proved a sci fic and its special effects could be done on a small budget---came out in the late 1970s....very funny! Pinbeck, the Beachball "Alien" and of course "SMART BOMB"; "I EXIST THEREFORE I AM"

  • Classic

  • "Caution: THERMOSTELLER DEVICE."

    Lol.

  • This film has buondless importence

  • "..oh, i dont wanna do that!!..." anyone who cant laugh at this is an Avatar fan....

  • "they're not lost in space, they're loose" = brilliant

  • This was a huge influence on Rob Grant and Doug Naylor when they were writing Red Dwarf. That fact alone makes this film a classic. Carpenter is a genius.

  • all the making of an adventure porno in space.. join dick dansette and sheila longthroat as they !!try to save mankind!! for fuck sake what was the budget for this?? a video camera twenty quid??

  • @dirkwang1 "for fuck sake what was the budget for this?? a video camera twenty quid??" This was a college student project done for $60,000 (which would hardly pay for lunch on a big budget Hollywood film). Given that it was the first movie by a couple of kids with no money, I think it's brilliant.

  • best insane movie evah!

  • totally great comedy, best Scifi comedy ever! Not silly like Spaceballs, but well thought out and ultimately rewarding and Realistic unlike most...

  • @syqko Spaceballs sucked ass

  • @syqko the only way this is funny is if your stoned

  • @syqko Dark Star is notr a comedy

  • Hm... Cynthia Varga :O:O

  • this film is supposed to be a comedy?

trailer did a horrible, horrible job of expressing that information.

  • check it out, the trailer isnt great its actually both quite deep phycologically, and also sort of tounge in cheek am i supposed to be laughing humour, its intended, difficult to explain, but damn fine film.

  • @acrophobe imagine the surprise, though!

  • @acrophobe thats because its not a comedy.

  • @acrophobe Dark Star was a "dry run" for Alien.

  • R.I.P. Dan O'Bannon.

  • Trying to press play i voted as a bad movie :(

  • Just watched it for the 1st time. The movie is awesome. The story is brilliant and the direction is top. I did not know it is from the same guy who made ''The Thing''. That movie is the reference in horror movies..

  • This "guy "also made "Halloween" one of the best and most copied horror movie.

  • i like good old fashioned future.

  • Way back when I brought this video over to my girlfriends place to watch...she saw the first 10 mins and made put in another movie...women!

Carpenters trake marks have always been his best sell..it is apparent in Dark Star

  • total epicness

  • Dan O'Bannon passed away today, at 63. Goddamn it.

  • Atleast my version of the DVD has the cut and the original versions.

  • Best special effects ever.

    Help my brain hurts.

  • Holy fuck... Awhile back I watched the "dark space - bomb 20" video on youtube and was blown away. I was thinking for myself "This must be a sequel to 2001" then I found 2010... and it sucked.

After that failure I stopped wondering about it.

Today I looked up John Carpenter's movies and saw the trailer for this movie. It first seamed like a 2001 rip of with bad editing and budget (if you compare the two). But is seams to be a 2001 parody and I recognised it a bit.

  • Now I'm really looking forward for seeing this movie!

  • You don't know what you're missing but this movie is so hard to find. I am lucky enough to own the full version, only on VHS, I should add. There is a DVD/laserdisc version but all the best funny parts are cut out!

  • I think you underestimate the power of internet.

2min later: found it and now downloading it :P

  • Hahaha carpenters really early films

  • i was on shroomzzzzz when i saw this

  • this movies are scarier than the new ones! no sci shit

  • my mind just melted from all the mind-melting excitement

  • CB handle that is

  • starmon2, Me too. When it came out, the poster said " bombed out in space with a spaced-out bomb. Never forgot that one.

  • Ha haha I saw this when it came out. Even used the title as my CD handle for a while. Very fun!! It sucks you in with apparent logic and then firmly plants, tongue in cheek. It runs the gamut of emotions, one member of the crew in cryo-freeze but still sadly aware. An omnipotent bomb, and a crew on the edge of losing it big time. I'm buying the DVD, right now. Light one up.

  • As much as you love the film, I recommend the original VHS version. The DVD got cut to f**k because of creative disputes.

  • This is one of my favorite movies ever. Dan O'Bannon (co-writer and the guy who played Pinback) also wrote the script for "Return of the Living Dead" and you can really see his sense of humor shine through. The low-budget cheesiness actually made it a lot funnier.

What sickens and chills me is the certainty that eventually some money-grubbing, creatively bankrupt Hollywood douchebag like Michael Bay is going to eventually make a bazillion-dollar remake of this and it will suck ass.

  • If a remake ever happens, we should do our best to crucify it all over the internet.

Carpenter's charming, crazy independent movie cannot be corrupted!

  • @UncleFexxer And if he,or anyone else ever did, there's a very good chance it'd bomb---I mean, out of all the remakes, even of ultra-obscure flicks, how many of them have been hits?

  • @UncleFexxer that's impossible. Michael Bay doesnt know any good movies!! so he will never touch Dark Star nor any of John Carpenter's, David Lynch's or David Croenenberg's movies ever!

  • @tool619 He won't touch Lynch. Maybe Cronenberg, but it's only a matter of time before his production company, Platinum Dunes remakes every film ever made. They even have plans to remake Rosemary's Baby, and Carpenter's Halloween was already remade by Rob Zombie.

Dunes and Bay are like crazed sexual predators, raping every classic that they can lay their dickbeating hands on. Of course Bay only funds shitty remakes to make his own films look like the works of David Lean and for money. The cunt.

  • @UncleFexxer That already happened. It was called "Alien".

  • @UncleFexxer Something like that lame "Alien", perhaps?

  • @UncleFexxer just because all modern films look better doesnt mean they suck.

  • @UncleFexxer Oh God no please don't let that happen

  • In the making of doc of Alien, the writer (I think) actually says that this his own first film and Alien was a remake of Darkstar played for shocks instead of laughs (and abit more cash cos the studio saw the success of starwars and wanted a space movie of their own).

  • that 'red ball' was probably what gave them the idea for alien the movie. >: (=

  • You can find this movie online for free on the amctv site, in the video section, under b-movies. Go watch it!

  • 1:47 what is that`? a red ball fucker? :o

  • In reality its a beach ball LOL

But in the story, its a rebellious alien who was taken in by one of the astronauts as a mascot, much to his horror, later on...

  • Hey big O, I got the DVD some time ago, maybe I lucked out, it says it has the Theatrical Release & the Special Edition, and on the back it says, deleted scenes in the Special Ed. version may present a momentary pause during playback. So I'm taking that to mean, the put the deleted scenes in this version. And remember, 'they're not Lost in Space, they're LOOSE. hahahaha

  • Looks hiliarous and at the same time looks interesting and it looks like a spoof of 2001 a space odyssey and spoofing silent running!

  • the alien is so funny, its just a red beach ball that hugs you from behind XD

  • really have not seen this movie yet dafreeman101!

  • Excellent movie!

  • " Dark Star" is one of my favorite movies! I saw it in the 80's and thought it was hilarious. I know it was a student thesis, and the fact that it was so low budget only added to the comedy. Especially the muffin tin Talby wears as part of his space suit. I was lucky to find a mint copy of the vinyl LP.

  • Where can i get this movie?

  • Any DVD site can do it. But you can download it from a bit torrent site just google "isohunt" and install "utorrent" and you off !

On a personal note I have been communicating with Brian Arnelle (Dolittle) from the movie. for a month or more !

I even sent him the "10 minute theatre" clip of Dark Star from "You Tube" which he liked so much he posted the link in his blog !

  • Dark Star was originally a student film by John Carpenter and Dan O'bannon, which is why it was so low budget. It was shown at festivals and gained funding for some additional footage to be produced. It's a really fun/clever film, actually, and you'll see where a lot of major films (like ALiens) actually got their ideas from.

  • great trailer

  • i loved it, i really did! my brother showed me dark star when i was about 9 or something and it totally thrilled me.. i think, i'm one of the few people that cried at the end of it! ;) i wish, i could see the movie again, i've been searching for it for years now!

    i love the "alien"!

  • You into "Jack the Ripper" Alice ?

  • It`s 18 persec.

  • Notice that this trailer actually makes the movie look serious. Thankfully, it's a satire that is extremely funny (even despite its existential elements). As for how Dan O'Bannon thought up "Alien", it makes sense to me. There IS an alien who gets loose in the ship; it's very sneaky and causes comical havoc. Dan O'Bannon surely knew that if he took this subplot and made it serious and horrific, that he'd have a winner, and so there's your "Alien".

  • agreed vylkyle!

  • I love the music xDD

  • This looks like a poorman's 2001 TSO

  • O_O so the director of alien got the idiea from this movie? i dont know how he got it from a rated G movie and turned his in to a rated R kinda weird how he got the idiea from this movie no gore no blood no swear words.

  • I recall "fuck this shit" as one of the lines in this movie.

  • That looks hilarious!

    Honestly, it does.

  • I am a proud owner of this movie.:)

  • I recall this movie was released in what I percieved as a lull between the space-race fifties and sixties, and the unprecedented success of "Star Wars" and "Alien." I may have been reading something into it, but I also remember thinking it was a commentary on the day-to-day life of Vietnam combatants.

  • ...especially since the Star Destroyers look a bit like the Dark Star, you know?

  • Top trailer.

  • I rember seing this movie with my parents when I was 12. I thought it was cool back then. Great memories!

  • "They're not lost in space...they're LOOSE!"

    Total stoner talk!

  • many thanks
