I dont think people do it to put you down, I think people do it because majority of people assume latinos know tacos, salsa, etc. Its the same for white people and me getting comments that Im German, or Republican, or whatever. If you know its not true, dont worry about it. Just say, "Im American and dont know!" I love that comeback best!
