The Euro debt crisis has MUCH deeper roots than 2008. The issues with Greece, Spain, and Ireland were getting attention before the 2007-08 meltdown; as early as 2006, I was getting warnings about Greece, Spain, and Ireland.

Greenspan had wanted to pop the dot-com bubble at the end of 1996, hence his famous 'irrational exuberance' speech.
He was blocked from doing this.
Bush inherited a recession, and let Greenspan manage it by printing money and encouraging real estate speculation. This along with the Clinton administration's decision to not regulate swaps led to the 2008 meltdown.
