when you live in a country like Romania where the average salary is about 250 300 euros a month ( depending on the region, in Bucharest its about 400) you dont really feel like spending even 20 bucks on a game when you can just get it for free. And the best thing about it is that its legal :P. Sure I will gladly pay for games if I had 2000 or 3000 euros/ month like in other countries. So before you rich douches diss on someone, think about it first, you'd be doing it too if you were "broke".
I live in the UK and I only get paid around £300 a month, I'm a gamer I simply wait for prices to go down considerably before I buy things, if you just have a little bit of patience you can still support developers and not pirate things.
If you CANNOT PAY $60 for a game, you have more important things to do than just sit around playing pirated games all day. GET OFF YOUR ASS AND WORK LIKE THE REST OF US + THE GAME DEVELOPERS IN ORDER TO GET YOUR GAME.
I wish people would stop making stupid excuses. If you have time to play a game, you have time you buy it, if you don't have the money, why are you playing games when you could be getting a job, if you already have one, save up. Don't trust the site with your credit card? If you have any prepaid credit cards in local stores, use them, or just use paypal if you can. I understand some excuses, like InsanelyOrange's excuses, but msot of them are BS.
@PrivateKeehl What if you live in a poor area where it's near impossible to get money to buy games?
What if, say, you're cautious about your money and don't wanna spend it on something that's.. well, crap..
You don't just go out and buy a new car because it looks good. You're obviously gonna test drive it first to make sure it looks / feels good and that your money would be well spent.
Now admittedly some people pirate just for the sake of free games, but that's a whole other story.
@lynixai If it's well, crap, don't buy it. Not wanting to spend money on something is not an excuse to steal it. No way in hell I'm gonna get enough money for a corvette in the next 10 years, doesn't mean I can steal one. That black C6 down the street does look mighty fine though. :Þ And you not having money doesn't mean you can steal from those who do, stealing makes you deserve it LESS than them, so don't just steal from them. Those who make games earn the money from sales.
@lynixai You don't pay 100 000 bucks for a game. Cars and games is different. Watch reviews if you wanna know how a game is and use your head. But I hope everyone is starting to pirate games, then the market will die and no more games for us, good idea.
@TheXLink No, you don't pay 100.000 bucks for a game, but when you're young $60 is kind of a lot of money.
Reviews is based on opinions and therefor does not always match yours. 99 / 100 people might say the game is amazing, while you might think it sucks balls because you don't like the playstyle.
And again, you're not getting my point. You only pirate the game to test it out. If you like it, you buy it, if you don't like it, stop playing the game and don't buy it.. Simple as that
@lynixai News, gaming is expensive. Those who pirate games just want free stuff, no one will buy (no pun intended) that it is just a test to see if the game is good. Get the game on sale, when the price drops, I do that, I getting my games for less than 20 bucks, and honest. Renting, demos, videos online, there is other ways to see if a game is good other than stealing it. There are games that I can't buy, becaus they is not released here, but I sure as hell is not gonna pirate them..
@PrivateKeehl its easy to say when games cost 50 to 60 bucks on your country but 250 on mine. specially when you are a student and cant work till 18. thank god i can buy games now, but i couldnt back then and the only way i could get the games i wanted without having to save for a month to buy a single one was pirating them. also, i wouldnt have bought many of the games that i own right now if it wasnt for piracy, piracy is a great way to test games and make sure that its worth the money.
@bezoro2008 I can understand if you test a game to see if it's worth the money, if it is worth it, buy it, if it isn't, stop playing it. You couldn't get games unless you saved up for a month? Then save up for a month. Pirating is still wrong. Also, don't pirate and 'test' a game, say it's not worth buying so you refuse to buy it then continue playing it. If it's worth playing, it's worth buying. Once you figure out if it's worth buying or not, buy it or get rid of it. Price doesn't change that.
@PrivateKeehl thats what you dont quite understand, i used to pirate games and some were bad and i just stoped playing them but the good ones i kept of course and aspired for the day i would have the money to buy them. There is no reason to keep playing a game that you dont like just because its free if you pirate it. its not like, oh this game is crap so im not gonna buy it but im gonna keep playing it because i got it for free.
@bezoro2008 If you pirate a game to 'test' it, then once you know that you like it the test to see if you like it is over and at that point you should delete until you can buy it. You should not continue to play a game without paying for it 'cause of lack of money. Not being able to afford something does not give you the right to steal it. And I know most people will not play a pirated game they think is bad, but SOME do, and some use that as an excuse if they DO like the game. I understand that
@PrivateKeehl if you dont like the game then you wouldnt have payed for it anyways, but thats not the point, the point is: some people cant buy every game they want so they need to choose, but how do you choose if you never played it? so you pirate it, play a bit and see if you think its worth paying for it, if not just delete it from your HD and enjoy the games you like and have bought. got it? i dont pirate games anymore but im just trying to give you an insight from inside of it.
@bezoro2008 Dude. . . I. . . just. . . said that. . . . I said that I understand pirating it to test it, but like I was saying, I think it's wrong for people to say they are testing a game, say it's not worth paying for, and continue to play it anyway. I don't mind too much if you plan on paying for the game as long as you like it, but it's wrong to continue to play a game you refuse to ever pay for. But the price does NOT change that at all, I don't care where you live.
@PrivateKeehl No what do they expect, if they want to play a game, buy it. It's like anything ever made in the history of humankind you buy it to have it or use it. Or look at movies you want to watch a movie you buy it or buy a ticket, which is like renting it and if there's no rental then you buy it. Book's you buy it or you check out on the library so it's like renting it or loaning it
Also, I think if people want to play their games without DRM without pirating what you should do is buy the official game than pirate it. Not stealing than, unlocking.
I'm guilty of piracy, yes. The reason I do it though, since it's so hard to get games another way. In my country, idk for the rest of you, you can't use a credit card online at my age, so I can't buy games online. The stores are far away, and doesen't always have the titles, ecspecially the indie ones. So it often ends up in downloading, sadly. ... same thing when I LAN, I don't really have time to run to a store, I just copy the files from a friends computer.
Piracy is common among a lot of people simply because they are unable to purchase videos legitimately online. I don't pirate but as a New Zealander I am constantly frustrated when going to UK/US websites like Amazon or BBC and being blocked from accessing content (whether paid or free) because of zoning laws. On a similar note for some reason my IP address is blocked on Adobe.com and I can never download PDF readers and Flash.
lol if anyone knows the commentator guns4hire.... his opinions are completely in the opposite direction when it comes to this video lol. He blocked me because I called him ignorant for the whole argument of 2nd hand games LOL good video, thumbs up :D
I left wow for rift, only because me and my gf prefered the theme and graphics, and obviously rift seem to have more future than wow at the very moment :) because wow is old, and nomatter how much fanboy you are, you better accept the fact that the game is getting old, and it's not getting any bit better than it is
I think that people who don't have enough money to purchase a game but want to play it should pirate games. In the town I live in,there isn't ONE game store that sells not pirated games,so I am forced to pirate games...
i download games like i downloaded BFBC2 before i bought it to see if my PC could run it and i downloaded minecraft b/c i couldnt wait :P but i ofc bought that later aswell aslong as u buy the game i see no issue in trying it out :P
Piracy, when done right, is beneficial for the gaming industry. ie., actually supporting games which you enjoy. If you pirate a game and then buy it because it is good, then I don't really see anything wrong with that. It encourages companies to actually want to make a decent game and not just money grub their customers.
I don't support anti-piracy efforts at all. Not simply because of my views on piracy, but because, anti-piracy efforts are completely ineffective.
(cont...) Completely. Think about that. And not only are they completely ineffective, they can make it extremely frustrating for legitimate game owners due to poor design, bugs, and simple unnecesary security layers in their software. If anything, the anti-piracy effort is keeping the pirates alive, because pirates don't have to deal with the bullshit to play their damned game.
Piracy is a result of stuff being too damn expensive. It's a market: If Frank from school can get you a copy of SuperAwesomeShooter9000 for 5 bucks, and the store asks for 89 before sales tax, you're not acting morally by paying the store, because these guys obviously don't know how to bring a game to you in an economic fashion. If SuperAwesomeShooter9000 cost 5 bucks at the store, Frank can't compete. It's a CD, it costs 10¢ to manufacture and print it. Even less via digital distribution.
2) The company made the game and put in the effort- no matter the cost, pirating it is immoral and disrespectful. It's a capitalist word- the manufacturer sets the price and if you don't like it then fuck off.
3) Sure the Cd is cheap to prodce, but how fucking short-sighted are you? Maintenece (for online servers) original production and staff. You don't just fucking magic the game out of thin air, dumbass.
@TheReallydontcare Oh, Mr. Economist huh? I actually studied this. Copyright laws have nothing to do with a free market, (your term: Capitalism) and everything about state enforced monopolies (again, your term: Capitalism) - Monopolies artificially inflate prices (such is the case with games) and rip off the consumer. Without piracy, games would cost even more, and much fewer people could play them. Thank god for piracy!
@InternetStudiesGuy Right, okay but I wasn't going into the economical impacts of piracy? Fact is, piracy=stealing. Stealing=illegal. So, don't pirate stuff.
Sure feel free to use all your fancy terms and verbal trcikery, but the fact remains that if you pirate stuff, you are a dick- I admit to torrenting some songs that I can't find on iTunes, but pirating ALL of your $50/$60 dollar games is pathetic and just scrounging.
You keep on stealing and feeling like you're helping society. Sounds fun.
@TheReallydontcare Piracy=stealing, huh? What equals extortion, the color purple? What about aggravated assault, is it the same as an aggravated ostrich? Maybe fraud is a pot of hot beans then. And murder is equal to the integral of pi to the power of x.
@InternetStudiesGuy And frankly, so what if prices rip off the consumers? The company made the games, and games aren't a life essential, so they can price whatever the hell they want.
@TheReallydontcare Tables aren't essential either. But if a carpenter wants to charge 5'000$ for a regular table, customers go to another carpenter, where they pay 50$ for a table. What happens in the software industry however, is that the first carpenter runs to the state and claims he has the sole right on selling tables and that the other carpenter thus an evil pirate that needs to be imprisoned.
But please continue to get ripped off by the industry, Mr. Genius.
Okay... but the other carpenter isn't selling a different table for 50$. He's stealing the same table and either giving it away or selling it for a pittance.
One last question, Mr I-know-everything-because-I'm-the-best-thing-ever.
What if everyone pirated games? Literally EVERYONE. How would the industry survive? Sure it's fine with about maybe 5% stealing games. But EVERYONE. The industry would be fucked. Jesus I can't believe you actually think piracy is right.
@TheReallydontcare He's "stealing" the table? I don't think you have the mildest technical or judicial understanding of the whole process. No: He is creating a duplicate table, not stealing anything.
"What if everyone pirated?" Again, in the grand scheme of things, either this is what's already happening, or it is a logical impossibility. Go figure out what "piracy" and "copyright infringement" mean.
@freakurGma That's what demos SHOULD be for... and it makes me sad any time that a game comes out without one. For console games, you were historically safe to assume that it would run perfectly on your hardware; with PC titles, though, you don't have that, plus you can't return it if it turns out to be garbage.
@WakeShinigami one demos mostly comprise of one or two fucking levels or have time limits that are garbage plus alot of games dont have demos for the games or take to long to download and instal just to play and test and secondly as long as u know where to go the games will almost always work and know how to read the files when u pirate them for pc then go buy them or get them second hand or any platform for that matter so yeah i agree with u thats wat demos should be for but arent
You should also concider that piracy isn't only a bad thing. It has its bad part (no money for the devs, ect ect) AND has good part (free advertising). Look at minecraft. It got big because it was so easy to pirate. And the game was good so people started talking about it, wich caused other people to learn about the game and pirate/bought it. And then it spread until minecraft went where it is now.
@Lalaldd So... rather than invest that 30 minutes into playing the free game, you're going to watch TB play for 30 minutes so you can decide whether to try the game out? That seems very time efficient.
If it meets both requirements i usually play for 30min, copy my saves and buy the game. I use piracy as kinda like renting pc games, as long as you buy the game in the end its not really wrong. (besides stealing it i know)
@realkman666 Ouch, dont care what you think about me. I do it for those reasons and thats it, since pc's dont have a good renting system its what i do. If you don't like it, shove it up you're ass.
@areology 1. I live in Canada, in Canada its legal to download torrents that contain movies, music, games, ect. Its illegal to upload these things in Canada. 2. I don't think the companies would have the time or patience to track down one meezly person and file a law suit agents them.
@InsanelyOrange Game companies would only track down the original seed of the torrent and possible the other largest seed contributors, not necessarily every single person who downloaded the torrent.
@happilylonelygamer Wow, nice comment.I don't Remember asking you for you're opinion, and you could of at least justified you're answer instead of putting in a pussy insult. So, you shut the FUCK up until you have something useful to say.
@InsanelyOrange For example, systemsrequirements lab is how I find out if I can run a game, and it works. If a game that I want has a demo, I'll play it. If I can't test a game before buying and don't wanna get burned, I live without. Gaming is just a hobby, you can live without. Or I just wait for reviews.
@happilylonelygamer System Requirements lab can't tell you what FPS you get on the game or what settings you can play it at. The problem with PC games is that there are practically no demo's for the games. Little to no developers even put demos out for there game. Most Reviews get early copies of the game from the developer but they have to put out a review above a certain score. So reviewing is pretty much flawed.
@InsanelyOrange System requirements lab can tell you if you can run it, if you get below recommended, go low graphics, common fucking sense, it works ya know. Also, wait a fucking week for good review then, god, people like you are entitled fucking twats, USE YOUR BRAIN, BITCH!
@Dkayed85 When you steal something, you take the original version of it and you're the only one having that version of it forever. Untill you sell it or get rid of it.
When you Pirate something, you don't take the original version away. You copy the original version.
So whoever had the original version of that game that you pirated, still has it, aka it's not stolen.
But it's too complicated to explain the whole deal about piracy online.
@happilylonelygamer System Req labs does NOT take into account your possible out of date drivers or stuff that might not be running as intended on the game for some odd reason. All it does is look at your spec quallity, aka your CPU cores and speed and your RAM and graphics etc etc. It does not look at each one individually and check if there has been reported any issues with them.
@InsanelyOrange piracy is NOT stealing, stealing is to peminatly deprive the owner of the product, piracy is when you download a striped vertion of the game, hence not stealing, but still illegal
When It comes down to piracy, it's the philosophy of the person pirating. Why steal intellectual property of the little guy? If your gonna be l33t, boycott large corporations which sell us the things we need. Not developers who make a living selling what we want.
I think blizzard wants to kill WoW for Diablo 3 or maybe they have something else around there, but they really want to kill WoW or they just got stupid for some reason
I've tried running homebrew on my Nintendo Wii but deleted it as it was kinda boring and nothing I used worked right, I've never thought about modding my Xbox 360 as I think it's such a great games console that I don't see the point. I think game developers should lower the price of games so their more affordable by more people as I struggle to buy most of the games I like due to them costing £40-£50. I'm starting to get into PC gaming having upgrading my graphics card :)
My Family and friends ecept 1 (1!) don`t do this besides me (idea iof ours w esupport the devollopers) but the rest as soon a sthe ds wa shas hacked my little cousins had instead of 3 good games suddenly 200 games. I explain it to them why this in`t good and raction games are to expensive. And me you buy € 30 movies but € 60 game is to much same with friends. let`s say this i decided to buy my games an dstopped trying to explain.
@BeatlesFan32 End of the season :(. im not sure if i have this right, but i remember TB saying that he has quit WoW again due to his frustration with blizzard. I dont know if or when Azeroth daily will continue.
The only games I ever download illegally are games with no demos (or referral only demos etc), and if I like it, I buy them. How people expect you to fork out £40-60 for something you aren't allowed to legally try before you buy it, I will never understand.
You described the exact reason why I never bought bioshock 2. First of all I don't want the securom virus on my computer, which drove me from retail purchases to steam only purchases, but for what ever reason bioshock 2 on steam has 3 DRM versions. One of these is securom itself, which is what I was trying to get away from in the first place. I just hope bioware doesn't ever do this to me. I have 4 bioware games and none of them have any DRM other than steam.
Wait wait... Space pirates & Zombies isn't on Steam? Damn, I was going to buy that one once I was paid. I mean I've got Impulse due to owning Sins of a Solar Empire but honestly? I'd rather not give money to that services new owners... I'll need to think this one over, maybe wait to see if it gets on Steam...
I always though piracy is for douchbags with no money, and I still do. I mean I see the reason behind it, free games more fun etc, but what people fail to get is that your supporting the devs. So what if a game costs $80? Unless its a for sure ripoff then I see why not go and buy it, that money per game means that they have a huge team. I can rage all day but you get my point, why pirate good games?
hey guys im sam an upcoming commentator who is looking too get his channel across. i have about 25 uploads and upload almost daily full hd videos. i do lets plays aswell as call of duty soo if you like gaming videos and are looking for a change come check out my channel. Thanks and hope you enjoy :)
i will get a pirated game just to see if its good if its good i will support it and buy it
and if it wasnt i can just delete it and this way i didnt wast my money on a shitty game.i think if consoles were upgradeable that would encourage more pc games developers to start developing for consoles, however u may think this will make getting a console just doesnt make sense well im not saying upgrade it evry month or so just if a game uses a new tech make the consoles upgradeable to that level :)
@ImLegend932 Well, upgrading hardware takes knowhow. It would effectively turn the consoles into PC's, but with less software for them.
As for the piracy issue, I'm right with you there. I actually think that piracy, if anything, improves sales. People don't like to buy unknown software - They like to know what they get. If a fairly low-profile game is released, but its good, I'd speculate that a lot of the sales of that game is due to piracy-testing prior to purchase.
@xxhellspawnedxx yeah but instead of having this ( gap ) of tech after 6 -8 years of the the console release you could just upgrade a few part and your ready for the next 5 years , u may not agree with me but thats my personal opinion.
@ImLegend932 Well... The thing is, usually they release new consoles with the future in mind. Hardware enough to handle the games which are gonna be released in the coming years. But it would possibly be in their interest to lower the bar a little on the hardware, and release new consoles more often.
The thing about consoles, why they shouldn't be turned into modular game-computers, is that it would scare away a big chunk of customers, who aren't used to handling hardware upgrades and so on.
Ace of spaces had resolutions options, you only have to change the res in the config files. Remember though, it's pre-pre-pre-pre alpha, so it's still pretty buggy.
Does anyone else just think that Blizzard is milking WoW to death just because they're too busy with their next MMO to care? It seems like they're putting out just enough content and all these little things to distract most of us for just a few more months so as soon as Titan (or whatever it's called) comes in that they couldn't seriously care less about WoW and just move on.
@Hologue: I don't think their milking WoW to death but I do believe that they have overcommited themselves to a large degree. Their working on Titan, Starcraft 2 stuff, Diablo 3, and of course WoW. I think they just dropped the ball on dividing up their teams more evenly to handle this output. Isn't this the first time in awhile where they actually released more stuff than just WoW related material?
Pirated games on pc are merely a demo in my opinion, the multiplayer doesn't work and mostly you can't even register the games properly wich is good.
Although there needs to come a change of how companies get their money even if people pirate games. Couse you can't stop piracy so you have to adapt to the situation.
GOG is a rip off, I bought a game from them once and couldn't get it working right. To this day I have emailed for support to this 7 times this year and have yet to get any response.
Btw, the second letter had good spelling and punctuation. I may not always watch these things, but even for me it's weird it's the first well written mail. First one to pay attention to because of that as well.
Pirating from an indie isn't bad. As long as it's keep it, buy it. If you plan to play it more than just the first few levels you should already plan to purchase. Indie dev or regular dev, it's still about the game. Especially with indies you don't always know what you get and there's no demo either. In the end, pirates are pirates; some just don't pay even if it's something they love.
People don't understand that piracy under the "car" argument doesn't hold because in the "car" argument you make it personal. This is BUSINESS and there's this little thing called economics. You are deflating the overall value of the item by duplicating from the company and thus you are making them lose product.
the whole reason why i im pirating games is because not every game is as Awesome as the developers say..... the feeling of buying a crappy game for 60 euro's is much more intense then buying a pc game that is actually
worth the 60 euro's.(which is actually 86,30 dollars ) lets be honest here 80% of all games are just money makers instead of actually giving the player the full demand that they really want. but remeber the biggest spenders of games are still the people who pirate some games
I partly disagree about what you described about the music industry. Looking at it from a musicians point of view, because of file sharing and illegal downloading of artists music record companies are less likely to take the "risks" they once were. It is becoming increasingly easy to promote yourself through Spotify, CD baby, Amazon and Itunes that people are bypassing the companies all together. So what we see is people who want to make money from their music, being hindered.
to be honest, piracy is usually only done by people who can't afford to buy the game, or children who's parents wont buy them the game, I personally believe that if someone does pirate a game when they are young, that they will actually buy the game when they are older
It's stupid to pirate it's not that hard to pay 10-60 dollars for a game and if you cant buy with credit card why not use a prepaid visa debit card? Works just fine.
@TheFluffyBunny15 Not really, if you want to play say 3 new games thats new thats $60 each so 180 total, few have that much money to blow, I know people who do pirate new games fully cracked of all content before its even available to buy at stores and they do it all the time saving them hundreds and thousands of dollars over time, and piracy isn't that big of a deal, if I did have the money to buy bunch of games I would still do piracy cause it saves money for other stuff
@TheFluffyBunny15 I think you'll agree that people from 15-25 are the most likely to buy games. I'm 21 and with my student income of 2000 Czech crowns per month (which equals approximately 70 bucks) plus the occasional weekend job I can't really spend money on games unless I want to starve for a couple of days :)
On the topic of piracy I recommend going to The Escapist's Extra Credits and watch their episode for the 20th of January 2011, it's very enlightening 8)
You can pirate console games. Homebrew, derp derp. People who claim the PC is piracy ridden are idiots. It's not a industry ending practice for the PC.
Don't make crappy games, and people won't pirate it.
@gamingfurry14 FINALLY someone gets it, sometimes you might format your computer, what might you then do, download it again... i wouldn't have bought it again just because i formatted...
When TotalBiscuit plays Brink it makes me not wanting to install my bought game of it. He doesent take advantage of the SMART system wich is supposed to make it different from any other first person shooters!
Omg im addicted to the new mailbox content. Such a good insight to gaming. Its kind of sad that blizz has pretty much lost TB. Hopefully a less arrogant blizzard will produce better, more filling content. Oh and its the 31st......time for a new mailbox?
i pirate games that dont have demos...(many time the pirated version doesnt have full functionality) once i know if i like the game or not then i buy it or dont
i love when people complain about piracy. Like tb said the music industry said that music would die thanks to pirates. You can thank pirates for the dramatic change from 100% physical disc's to 90% digital distribution and making it cheaper. It will go the same way with games. I have pirated many games, if they sucked i uninstalled, if they were good like MW2 when it came out i bought it. And in the not to distant future consoles will move to digital distribution so u can play from the cloud.

when you live in a country like Romania where the average salary is about 250 300 euros a month ( depending on the region, in Bucharest its about 400) you dont really feel like spending even 20 bucks on a game when you can just get it for free. And the best thing about it is that its legal :P. Sure I will gladly pay for games if I had 2000 or 3000 euros/ month like in other countries. So before you rich douches diss on someone, think about it first, you'd be doing it too if you were "broke".

My philosophy on pirating games :
If you CANNOT PAY $60 for a game, you have more important things to do than just sit around playing pirated games all day. GET OFF YOUR ASS AND WORK LIKE THE REST OF US + THE GAME DEVELOPERS IN ORDER TO GET YOUR GAME.

I wish people would stop making stupid excuses. @lynixai If it's well, crap, don't buy it. Not wanting to spend money on something is not an excuse to steal it.
Simple as that
lynixai 6 months ago
@lynixai News, gaming is expensive. Those who pirate games just want free stuff, no one will buy (no pun intended) that it is just a test to see if the game is good. Get the game on sale, when the price drops, I do that, I getting my games for less than 20 bucks, and honest. Renting, demos, videos online, there is other ways to see if a game is good other than stealing it. There are games that I can't buy, becaus they is not released here, but I sure as hell is not gonna pirate them..
TheXLink 6 months ago
@PrivateKeehl its easy to say when games cost 50 to 60 bucks on your country but 250 on mine. specially when you are a student and cant work till 18. thank god i can buy games now, but i couldnt back then and the only way i could get the games i wanted without having to save for a month to buy a single one was pirating them. also, i wouldnt have bought many of the games that i own right now if it wasnt for piracy, piracy is a great way to test games and make sure that its worth the money.
bezoro2008 3 months ago in playlist Season 1
@bezoro2008 I can understand if you test a game to see if it's worth the money, if it is worth it, buy it, if it isn't, stop playing it. You couldn't get games unless you saved up for a month? Then save up for a month. Pirating is still wrong. Also, don't pirate and 'test' a game, say it's not worth buying so you refuse to buy it then continue playing it. If it's worth playing, it's worth buying. Once you figure out if it's worth buying or not, buy it or get rid of it. Price doesn't change that.
PrivateKeehl 3 months ago
@PrivateKeehl thats what you dont quite understand, i used to pirate games and some were bad and i just stoped playing them but the good ones i kept of course and aspired for the day i would have the money to buy them. There is no reason to keep playing a game that you dont like just because its free if you pirate it. its not like, oh this game is crap so im not gonna buy it but im gonna keep playing it because i got it for free.
bezoro2008 3 months ago
@bezoro2008 If you pirate a game to 'test' it, then once you know that you like it the test to see if you like it is over and at that point you should delete until you can buy it. You should not continue to play a game without paying for it 'cause of lack of money. Not being able to afford something does not give you the right to steal it. And I know most people will not play a pirated game they think is bad, but SOME do, and some use that as an excuse if they DO like the game. I understand that
PrivateKeehl 3 months ago
@PrivateKeehl if you dont like the game then you wouldnt have payed for it anyways, but thats not the point, the point is: some people cant buy every game they want so they need to choose, but how do you choose if you never played it? so you pirate it, play a bit and see if you think its worth paying for it, if not just delete it from your HD and enjoy the games you like and have bought. got it? i dont pirate games anymore but im just trying to give you an insight from inside of it.
bezoro2008 3 months ago
@bezoro2008 Dude. . . I. . . just. . . said that. . . . I said that I understand pirating it to test it, but like I was saying, I think it's wrong for people to say they are testing a game, say it's not worth paying for, and continue to play it anyway. I don't mind too much if you plan on paying for the game as long as you like it, but it's wrong to continue to play a game you refuse to ever pay for. But the price does NOT change that at all, I don't care where you live.
PrivateKeehl 3 months ago
@PrivateKeehl No what do they expect, if they want to play a game, buy it. It's like anything ever made in the history of humankind you buy it to have it or use it. Or look at movies you want to watch a movie you buy it or buy a ticket, which is like renting it and if there's no rental then you buy it. Book's you buy it or you check out on the library so it's like renting it or loaning it

Hagge95 7 months ago
Piracy is common among a lot of people simply because they are unable to purchase videos legitimately online. I don't pirate but as a New Zealander I am constantly frustrated when going to UK/US websites like Amazon or BBC and being blocked from accessing content (whether paid or free) because of zoning laws. On a similar note for some reason my IP address is blocked on Adobe.com and I can never download PDF readers and Flash.

Not simply because of my views on piracy, but because, anti-piracy efforts are completely ineffective.
damianGray 8 months ago
(cont...) Completely. Think about that. And not only are they completely ineffective, they can make it extremely frustrating for legitimate game owners due to poor design, bugs, and simple unnecesary security layers in their software. If anything, the anti-piracy effort is keeping the pirates alive, because pirates don't have to deal with the bullshit to play their damned game.
damianGray 8 months ago
If you think the sea eagle is good try the topak, I believe thats what it is called, but put rapid fire on it and it is definitely a trusty side arm.
ToxicTwig 8 months ago
Piracy is a result of stuff being too damn expensive. It's a market: If Frank from school can get you a copy of SuperAwesomeShooter9000 for 5 bucks, and the store asks for 89 before sales tax, you're not acting morally by paying the store, because these guys obviously don't know how to bring a game to you in an economic fashion. If SuperAwesomeShooter9000 cost 5 bucks at the store, Frank can't compete. It's a CD, it costs 10¢ to manufacture and print it. Even less via digital distribution.
InternetStudiesGuy 8 months ago
@InternetStudiesGuy Right, yeah, but:
1) What kind of game costs 89 bucks at a store?
2) The company made the game and put in the effort- no matter the cost, pirating it is immoral and disrespectful. It's a capitalist word- the manufacturer sets the price and if you don't like it then fuck off.
3) Sure the Cd is cheap to prodce, but how fucking short-sighted are you? Maintenece (for online servers) original production and staff. You don't just fucking magic the game out of thin air, dumbass.
TheReallydontcare 8 months ago
@TheReallydontcare Oh, Mr. Economist huh? I actually studied this. Copyright laws have nothing to do with a free market, (your term: Capitalism) and everything about state enforced monopolies (again, your term: Capitalism) - Monopolies artificially inflate prices (such is the case with games) and rip off the consumer. Without piracy, games would cost even more, and much fewer people could play them. Thank god for piracy!
InternetStudiesGuy 8 months ago
@InternetStudiesGuy Right, okay but I wasn't going into the economical impacts of piracy? Fact is, piracy=stealing. Stealing=illegal. So, don't pirate stuff.
Sure feel free to use all your fancy terms and verbal trcikery, but the fact remains that if you pirate stuff, you are a dick- I admit to torrenting some songs that I can't find on iTunes, but pirating ALL of your $50/$60 dollar games is pathetic and just scrounging.
You keep on stealing and feeling like you're helping society. Sounds fun.
TheReallydontcare 8 months ago
@TheReallydontcare Piracy=stealing, huh? What equals extortion, the color purple? What about aggravated assault, is it the same as an aggravated ostrich? Maybe fraud is a pot of hot beans then. And murder is equal to the integral of pi to the power of x.
You need to get a couple things straight.
InternetStudiesGuy 8 months ago
@InternetStudiesGuy And frankly, so what if prices rip off the consumers? The company made the games, and games aren't a life essential, so they can price whatever the hell they want.
TheReallydontcare 8 months ago
@TheReallydontcare Tables aren't essential either. But if a carpenter wants to charge 5'000$ for a regular table, customers go to another carpenter, where they pay 50$ for a table. What happens in the software industry however, is that the first carpenter runs to the state and claims he has the sole right on selling tables and that the other carpenter thus an evil pirate that needs to be imprisoned.
But please continue to get ripped off by the industry, Mr. Genius.
InternetStudiesGuy 8 months ago
@InternetStudiesGuy ...What?
Okay... but the other carpenter isn't selling a different table for 50$.
TheReallydontcare 8 months ago
@TheReallydontcare He's "stealing" the table? I don't think you have the mildest technical or judicial understanding of the whole process. No: He is creating a duplicate table, not stealing anything.
"What if everyone pirated?" Again, in the grand scheme of things, either this is what's already happening, or it is a logical impossibility. Go figure out what "piracy" and "copyright infringement" mean.
InternetStudiesGuy 8 months ago
@TheReallydontcare
Uh huh.... and by the same reasoning consumers can pay whatever they want, including nothing.
Abraxis86 8 months ago
@Abraxis86 People can pay whatever they want including nothing? What?
Okay, so you spend one or two years making something awesome, fantastic, the best thing ever.
But I'm a sponge, and I don't feel like buying it. So I steal it.
But hey I'm allowed to pay whatever I want, sorry.

freakurGma 8 months ago
@freakurGma That's what demos SHOULD be for... and it makes me sad any time that a game comes out without one. For console games, you were historically safe to assume that it would run perfectly on your hardware; with PC titles, though, you don't have that, plus you can't return it if it turns out to be garbage.
WakeShinigami 8 months ago
@WakeShinigami one demos mostly comprise of one or two fucking levels or have time limits that are garbage plus alot of games dont have demos for the games or take to long to download and instal just to play and test and secondly as long as u know where to go the games will almost always work and know how to read the files when u pirate them for pc then go buy them or get them second hand or any platform for that matter so yeah i agree with u thats wat demos should be for but arent
freakurGma 8 months ago
You should also concider that piracy isn't only a bad thing. It has its bad part (no money for the devs, ect ect) AND has good part (free advertising). Look at minecraft. It got big because it was so easy to pirate. And the game was good so people started talking about it, wich caused other people to learn about the game and pirate/bought it. And then it spread until minecraft went where it is now.

@Lalaldd So... rather than invest that 30 minutes into playing the free game, you're going to watch TB play for 30 minutes so you can decide whether to try the game out? That seems very time efficient.
Tim333444 8 months ago
The only reason i pirate pc games is 2 reasons:
1. See if my computer can handle it
2. See if the game is enjoyable.
If it meets both requirements i usually play for 30min, copy my saves and buy the game. I use piracy as kinda like renting pc games, as long as you buy the game in the end its not really wrong. (besides stealing it i know)

@InsanelyOrange Game companies would only track down the original seed of the torrent and possible the other largest seed contributors, not necessarily every single person who downloaded the torrent.

@InsanelyOrange For example, systemsrequirements lab is how I find out if I can run a game, and it works. If a game that I want has a demo, I'll play it. If I can't test a game before buying and don't wanna get burned, I live without. Gaming is just a hobby, you can live without. Or I just wait for reviews.
happilylonelygamer 6 months ago in playlist TotalBiscuit Mailbox
@happilylonelygamer System Requirements lab can't tell you what FPS you get on the game or what settings you can play it at. The problem with PC games is that there are practically no demo's for the games. Little to no developers even put demos out for there game. Most Reviews get early copies of the game from the developer but they have to put out a review above a certain score. So reviewing is pretty much flawed.
InsanelyOrange 6 months ago

When you Pirate something, you don't take the original version away. You copy the original version.
So whoever had the original version of that game that you pirated, still has it, aka it's not stolen.
But it's too complicated to explain the whole deal about piracy online.
lynixai 6 months ago
@happilylonelygamer System Req labs does NOT take into account your possible out of date drivers or stuff that might not be running as intended on the game for some odd reason. All it does is look at your spec quallity, aka your CPU cores and speed and your RAM and graphics etc etc. It does not look at each one individually and check if there has been reported any issues with them.

@InsanelyOrange piracy is NOT stealing, stealing is to peminatly deprive the owner of the product, piracy is when you download a striped vertion of the game, hence not stealing, but still illegal

First of all I don't want the securom virus on my computer, which drove me from retail purchases to steam only purchases, but for what ever reason bioshock 2 on steam has 3 DRM versions. and if it wasnt i can just delete it and this way i didnt wast my money on a shitty game.i think if consoles were upgradeable that would encourage more pc games developers to start developing for consoles, however u may think this will make getting a console just doesnt make sense well im not saying upgrade it evry month or so just if a game uses a new tech make the consoles upgradeable to that level :)
ImLegend932 8 months ago
@ImLegend932 Well, upgrading hardware takes knowhow. It would effectively turn the consoles into PC's, but with less software for them.
As for the piracy issue, I'm right with you there. I actually think that piracy, if anything, improves sales. People don't like to buy unknown software - They like to know what they get. If a fairly low-profile game is released, but its good, I'd speculate that a lot of the sales of that game is due to piracy-testing prior to purchase.
xxhellspawnedxx 8 months ago
@xxhellspawnedxx yeah but instead of having this ( gap ) of tech after 6 -8 years of the the console release you could just upgrade a few part and your ready for the next 5 years , u may not agree with me but thats my personal opinion.
ImLegend932 8 months ago
@ImLegend932 Well... The thing is, usually they release new consoles with the future in mind. Hardware enough to handle the games which are gonna be released in the coming years. But it would possibly be in their interest to lower the bar a little on the hardware, and release new consoles more often.
The thing about consoles, why they shouldn't be turned into modular game-computers, is that it would scare away a big chunk of customers, who aren't used to handling hardware upgrades and so on.

Hologue 8 months ago

Btw, the second letter had good spelling and punctuation. I may not always watch these things, but even for me it's weird it's the first well written mail. First one to pay attention to because of that as well.

''ability to play cross-server in dungeon groups'' that never cost me money, it only made my life a little easier not having to wait so long anymore.

@taproot12 umm, there arent ANY games that cost $80, they usually cost $60 or $50l

Pirating from an indie isn't bad. As long as it's keep it, buy it. If you plan to play it more than just the first few levels you should already plan to purchase. Indie dev or regular dev, it's still about the game. Especially with indies you don't always know what you get and there's no demo either. In the end, pirates are pirates; some just don't pay even if it's something they love.

sigh - tb did you just call them nub engie's? thats not nice at all.

@fsriders So true :)

It's stupid to pirate it's not that hard to pay 10-60 dollars for a game and if you cant buy with credit card why not use a prepaid visa debit card? Works just fine.
TheFluffyBunny15 8 months ago
@TheFluffyBunny15 Not really, if you want to play say 3 new games thats new thats $60 each so 180 total, few have that much money to blow, I know people who do pirate new games fully cracked of all content before its even available to buy at stores and they do it all the time saving them hundreds and thousands of dollars over time, and piracy isn't that big of a deal, if I did have the money to buy bunch of games I would still do piracy cause it saves money for other stuff
Mrdudesirman 8 months ago
@TheFluffyBunny15 I think you'll agree that people from 15-25 are the most likely to buy games. I'm 21 and with my student income of 2000 Czech crowns per month (which equals approximately 70 bucks) plus the occasional weekend job I can't really spend money on games unless I want to starve for a couple of days :)

On the topic of piracy I recommend going to The Escapist's Extra Credits and watch their episode for the 20th of January 2011, it's very enlightening 8)

PC piracy isn't even as rampant and detrimental to developers as the used game market on consoles..
PCPicklePC 8 months ago
You can pirate console games. Homebrew, derp derp. People who claim the PC is piracy ridden are idiots. It's not a industry ending practice for the PC.
Don't make crappy games, and people won't pirate it.

Omg im addicted to the new mailbox content. Such a good insight to gaming. Its kind of sad that blizz has pretty much lost TB. Hopefully a less arrogant blizzard will produce better, more filling content. Oh and its the 31st......time for a new mailbox?

i love when people complain about piracy.
