If you had put that engine in a NASCAR-vehicle, the chassis would crack, tires would burst and the 50 year old driver would need a new set of pants...
AWESOME! The newer Cosworth's are V-8s that tick above 22,000 rpm and are on a slim fast diet weight wise. FIA has reduced power but still the 0-150-0 mph test is only contested by LeMans P1s.
I have been there, heard it , smelled it and understood it! Oh yah I watched it also!
For those of you have not had the fortune to do so, you have not lived until you have seen an F1 standing start live and, or to see these incredible machines in full flight at a distance of no more than than six feet!
Words can not describe! I count myself one of the lucky few!
i set this up as my alarm sound of my cell phone....i haven't got rid of waking up in the morning with this outstanding sound for years.....just feel the power when you re listening!
This was the Spyker team's (now Force India) first bench test with the Engine connected to the frame of the car, think 2006 close season... still awesome to see and hear!
i'd like to add a comment to the fuel argument: if you do watch the whole F1 programmes, then you should know that the fuel that these engines use is very similar to the bog standard petrol in most cars. sure, it does have little additions to make it more effective, but its nothing like jet fuel.
@iamthepolice Urrr well im not exactly have a degree in chemistry (im only doing A level at the moment) hmm hard to say but i think a higher octane rating would mean a fatser rate of ignition. but if the rating was too high then maybe it would be bye bye engine.
@sf1s Actually a higher octane rating means a greater resistance to detonation (or a higher burn temp if you will), and a faster burn. They're running really high octane (I would guess 118). Like when you put low octane in a sports car and it runs like shit... its because the fuel is burning before the spark comes.
@fastredws6 hmm ok then i'll take your word for it. however i do happen to know that the FIA regulate the octane rating of each fuel to make sure that it isn't too high
@sf1s oh ya they regulate it. A lot of motor sports do. And most of the time its a spec fuel that's issued to them before the race. So every one has the same stuff
big respect to the guy wearing all black standing soo close to the car! i bet that was the last thing he heard in his life & it must have been well worth it!
The idle at roughly 1:13 literally sounds like an animal growling. AMAZING!!! I would pawn my smallest child just to sit in the cockpit while they demonstrate the engine.
@iamthepolice Money, money, and more money. Combined with a pneumatic valve train (no valve springs), very small pistons, short rods and crank throws = very high RPM and a lot of HP/L. The downside to all that is one of the peakyest engines in racing and not much torque. But for a super light vehicle with the right gearing that’s just fine. A side note: according to my info, an F1 engine should be rebuilt about every 400hrs.
@Warblade118~they do have valve springs!.... the valves are NOT pneumatically ACTUATED (controlled). Pressurized air is used to eliminate valve-float/surge and seat-bounce. In other words.... to assist in CLOSING the valve.
@marek0086 Thanks for the correction. In all the articles I’ve read and CG animations of an F1 valve train I’ve never seen or heard anything about springs. Weird huh?
@marek0086 I forgot to mention, I never said they were actuated by air pressure, not too sure how that would work, I just said “…pneumatic valve train” but I did say “no valve springs” I had thought the only mechanism for retuning the valves to the seat was pneumatically. I’ll have to look into which of us is right.
@marek0086 Well, here’s what I found out. F1’s valve train is described as using a kind of air bellows spring. I still haven’t found a decent article showing exactly what the system looks like and how it works, which is frustrating. I guess I’ll have to take your word for it that there is an actual defiant spring in there. Thanks again.
