There's a hell of a difference between training and actual fighting.
They vigorously train in exercises that are not going to help them in fights. If they were good fighters then lots of people from around the world would have enrolled themselves in monasteries and won championships. But that never happened.

Read a book called American Shaolin by matthew polly.I just finished reading it.He went and lived with these people and trained with them for two years a great read.
Having done backstage work at some of these shows, while this is all 100% real, as soon as these guys get off stage after doing things like breaking metal or concrete with their bodies, they swear like crazy! kung fu isn't about martial skill any more. In fact, its more about acrobatics these days. The Chinese government outlawed monks from practicing real kung fu around the 1960s. Shaolin Monks actually say that their kung fu would more freestyle and resembles MMA.....if allowed to practice. All these animals style do not work in real life situations, its just acrobatics. I wonder if shaolin monks are equated with the grievous accusations that Roman Catholicism has hidden in their much degraded position of sexuality partly due to celibacy. Being protected by a communist nation, we obviously cannot rely on what has been revealed--we obviously will not see anything broadcasted to the public from a communist nation. But I would think that in light of the fact that less academic training, more seclusion, more protection, would tend to more of this problem.

The parent has to pay an annual fee in order to place thier child in shaolin to train and learn. And the parent must also provide a letter from the local police station stating they do not have a criminal record. Anyone with a criiminal record is banned by the chinese government to learn in Shaolin.

The kindness, and love that I learned, and that I have for this very wise old man is pure, and real. He would die for me, and I for him! Live and let live is the most important teaching, and how to rely on yourself, and defend the weak if it becomes necessary. Historically, the children that enter the monestary at a young age, are loved, and these Masters become like fathers, all teaching a different form of character and principles. I feel sorry for your children!

Whover thinks that this is child abuse, or that religious beliefs are being pushed on anyone is ignorant. I had the opportunity to train under, and become good friends with a Shaolin Master, and he did not push his religion on me. I am Christian, and that was never disrespected. Master Lee was able to teach good, discipline, and what it right and wrong, without me having to adapt to Zen Buddhism. No matter what the religion, in it's pure form, all teach goodness, not evil, and love.

Having done backstage work at some of these shows, while this is all 100% real, as soon as these guys get off stage after doing things like breaking metal or concrete with their bodies, they swear like crazy! Their skill lies more in their ability to control their bodies reactions, at least temporarily, to produce extraordinary results.

As a reward after years of practising and meditating, when one's Spirit has risen on the higher level of comprehending life and the world it self, they are invited to live in the temples, to gain more expirience and knowledge. That kind of invitation is considered for one of the greatest honors in the Eastern civilizations. The level of knowledge with this kind of life is far greater than the one you can gain in normal life, no matter how many books you will read.

Monks are those who live in the temples longer than just a couple of years. The eldest among them are those who are called Shaoling Monks. To become one, you need to spend many years in practising to make your Soul, Mind and Body as perfect as possible. The basic goal is to strengthen the Spirit in you, make you less vulnerable against the madness of the wicked world outside those temples.

child abuse is generally defined as, well basically being a bully, the classical definition back when spanking was the norm being this;
a swat to get a point across was normal, beating your kid with a hair brush, however, was not.
firmly telling a kid not to do something was normal, yelling at them for hours on end, is not.
Basically, anything that can impair the individual's growth as a person is considered abuse. Even maliciously ignoring someone without a good cause.

basically, irresponsibility regarding a kid, not preparing them for the adult world counts as child abuse. The more disturbing thing is that it never stops; parents who abuse their children continue to do so into adulthood. What begins as child abuse, becomes psychological abuse in adulthood; the baby boomers are setting themselves up for a miserable old age. They will be simply thrown away.

basically, doing whatever was necessary to prepare children for adulthood, has never historically been perceived as "abuse." Even the ancient Greeks, drew a fine line between discipline, and abuse. The Centaurs of Greek myth, were portrayed as generally wicked creatures who "were constantly fighting, and often struck their children for no reason." It's the highest action to work towards self-mastery as these monks do. All the world's problems are caused by greed, lust, lack of self-control, anger, hatred. If all our leaders were trained as these monks are, then we'd solve problems quickly, without the egos getting in the way. Without self-mastery, we are all a liability of sorts, regardless of our intentions. A calm, poised, disciplined egoless, mind is one best suited to solve problems in any office in this twisted world...

No....Shaolin Temple schools offers hope to its students. In China the living is not so good. There is a lot of poverty there outside Beijing. So many parents and kids feel taking their kids to shaolin village area are the only hopes to a better life.
