  • I so hope you are right!

  • 57 YEAR OS AGE, AND I CAN FALL ASLEEP TO THIS.

  • love the way it's major then he takes it minor @ 3:30 just to give it the punch... did anyone else do that before him in such a way?

  • 3:23 I mean

  • Berry Oakley...my oh my...

  • billboard #1 album , 1973

  • ironicly first album with dewayne gone ,3-4 Dicky Betts tunes charted for first time , including this one!

  • To think, the world was robbed of this genius at far too young an age. RIP Skydog

  • r u fucking kiddin me the best "american rock band" EVA

  • fuggin the bessssssssssssssssssss

  • Just ahh mazing!!!

  • Derek is Duane reincarnated.Get well Gregg we want another ABB reunion tour.Maybe Dicky will make peace with the band ?

  • @theseventhprotocol Are they not playing the Beacon in NYC this March, or did I miss something?

  • @theseventhprotocol Thank GOD! He's been back on tour for awhile. They did 2 shows in Philly and 5 in Boston!!! Also his LONG awaited Autobiography will be out May 1st. It will be entitled: It's My Cross To Bear

P.S. If you go on Amazon.com you can pre-order, because I can tell you, that that will be one book that will be FLYING right off the shelf. Got mine ordered already!!!!! Take Care and May the Road go on Forever!

  • @theseventhprotocol Derek is good, but not nearly as good as Duane

  • @theseventhprotocol Warren said he would never play with Dickey. I've been so bummed about that.

  • wiping tears

  • absolutely beautiful ! i can listen to this over and over

  • Just for future reference to ALL the possumtails of the world. The true "brothers and sisters" (ABB fans) don't sit and tear Skydog, Gregg or each other to shreds. There are a billion other web pgs. for that. It's about the MUSIC! THE MUSIC!! Leave yours, mine or any of the bands personal struggles out of it. We are ALL imperfect people, as there was only ONE of HIM!

And it was that amazing genious named Duane and his brillantly gifted brotha' that set it up that way. We are family!!,

  • @0819Marlene

Amen to that Sister and beautifully stated! This isn't a place for nit picking and feuding. You can feel the good times and the love in the music. Maybe that's why it takes you out of your daily cares and worries and into another place for a few minutes. Those who get it - know what I'm saying so clumsily. 'So rock on and have you a good time."

  • where's this version been all my life?!

  • Uaaaa! How wonderfull !

  • Oh! Skydog. There were no words then, there are NO words now. You will always be the ONE!

  • this has got to be one of the most melodic guitar tones ever. so thick and fluid, its beautiful

  • Just disable the commenting I beg you. Perfection wasted on the blind.

  • Dear Lord this is a piece of Heaven right there.

  • That tone is like butter from the best Jersey cows.....prize winners!

  • @possumtail I NEVER would have thought to describe it like that. But it's pretty accurate. I mean, if butter from Jersey cows is actually better, I'd have no idea.

  • @JamieOue The Jerseys milk is richer/thicker/creamier because it has the highest butter-fat content....

For the curious, Allman played his Les Paul thru a 50watt Marshall head and two cabinets of Cerwin Vega speakers. The tone on his studio work sounds much different: The first two albums he used Fender Twin Reverb w JBL speakers; but on EAT A PEACH he used a small early 60s Fender Super which sounded very close to his live Marshall/Cerwin Vega tone. Also,.don't forget the fingers

  • @possumtail If you have nothing RESPECTFUL to say about the amazingly BRILLANT genious you are listening to play.Who NEVER had one guitar lesson in his life. Who was loved and admired by the greatest black and white blues men of the time. Skydog was the most unselfish and humble musician on planet earth. Who thought nothing of fame or furtune, and would take the time to help anyone who needed it. Even someone like you.THEN GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

  • @possumtail

What a disrespectful git you are! You can disagree without being disagreeable, even IF you were all-knowing and all-seeing, which you aren't! You presume to know a lot - including the future if Duane had lived. He would NEVER call someone STUPID or full of BS . Oh...And BTW everyone AT that concert SAW him change that string. He'd be sorely disappointed to read this, and you owe the lady an apology

BTW...The heroine crack has nothing to do with anything!

  • Man Berry was great!

  • Duanes playing is like a fingerprint. Uniquely his and no other plays like he did. R.I.P. SKYDOG

  • Oh it's Duane soloing. His phrasing/sound, linking notes, glisses, bends are so distinctive... There is still NO ONE who sounds like he did....

  • It's amazing that people still mix up Duane and Dicky.

If it's a big fat country sounding Les paul it's Dicky.

BUT..... if it makes your hair stand up on end, it's Duane.

  • A lot of posts around a year ago were asking if this CD would ever be re-released. I got some good news for you! If you go to the Allman Brother's website, it has been re-released. The audio quality is shaky for the first few songs. But it improves by the time you get to Blue Sky. I've seen the Bro's 3 times over the past year.. and I'm yet to hear anything that brings the emotion out in me that Duane does. What a gift to music. He's as good as there ever was for me.

  • they played all these songs with les paul's and sg's but i play them with a strat sounds a little different but i dont think one is better then the other

  • Another great version of this song is with Dickey and Warren in Germany but one that is most under appreciated is with Jack Pearson, another great Brothers guitarist who might be their best. Type in Bluesky Jack Pearson, its with the Bros. amazing solo.

  • Duane, Dickey and Berry ,the heart and soul of the Brothers.BUTCH TRUCKS IS AN ASSHOLE!

  • just listened to the whole song from the link, this is duane. second solo (found on the long one) is dickey.

  • @danogzilla Well it's a good thing you've made the official proclamation, now we can all rest easy =P

  • @danogzilla listen sotly to the tone, is it Dickey? He played more forward!!

  • @danogzilla

    thanks for posting

Can't fathom he was only 24

    raven from pgh

  • Why is Tim Berners-Lee one of my heroes? Because he got the ball rolling so we could see, hear & discuss our heroes together. Yes many sayers & naysayers get to muddy the waters but when it all settles one can see clearly if one tries. I managed to find just about everything Duane ever recorded but that means less to me than seeing so many people enjoying, discussing, berating & honoring one of my All-Time heroes!!!

    One Love

  • People just want to be smartasses or are simply trollin'. I liked this comment section a lot better when the video had some 30 thousand views.

  • On the Eat a Peach version, Allman played the first half of the solo (from 1:07 to 2:27), Betts played the second. There's a few seconds where they both sync up. This is absolutely Duane Allman.

  • I beg to differ with you animoceria. unijammer

  • scusi folks,

this is 99,99 % dickey betts.

duane allman has another kind of phrasing and generally feeling.

anyway, although duane allman might be the greater player i like both very much.

  • @animoceria Read the caption below the vido and click on the link.

  • @MyBrotherMan How do we know for sure whose solo is whose? There's no video of Duane playing this live and just, what, four recordings? How do we know who goes first on the record, for that matter? Since Duane died, Dickey plays the second solo live, but I'm not so sure that he plays the second solo on the record or in the earlier live recordings. Some proof would be nice.

  • @aemathisphd Did you even listen to the whole song posted in the caption? There is a link to it. This clip cuts off right before the bridge into Betts'.

If you don't know the difference in their styles to the point that it isn't obvious, I can't see how you would even feel qualified to opine. There are some trademark Duane phrases here, among them his bend up, tap a fourth and bend back down.

Still, since common knowledge is that Duane plays first, the burden of proof rests on you.

  • @animoceria Dude, it's Duane. And you're so way off that he has another kind of phrasing and feeling; I knew instantly this was him when I first listened to the tune. You obviously aren't familiar with Duane's playing, and maybe this threw you off because it's played within the major scale (not that Duane thought about that, there's some unbelievable chromaticism in there that's just pure soul; NO ONE can touch this). Dickey's solo comes later and sounds just like Dickey.

  • @animoceria

This is Duane. Dickey wrote the song for his wife, Sandy "Blue Sky". They played on this together, but this part of the song is all Duane. He goes off onto a tangent then comes back to the song; classic Duane. I have almost every show that was recorded and in circulation and I know Duane when I hear him.

This show is one of my favorites. Stormy Monday, Dreams, and Elizabeth Reed from this show are simply amazing!

...and the road goes on forever.

  • Comment removed

  • @animoceria no, Duane always took the first solo in "Blue Sky" Besides, this is Duane's tone. Dickey had a more treble tone to his Les Paul Gold Top. I saw the original Allman Bros. a few times in the summer of '71, the best one was the last show at the Fillmore East on 6-26-71, late show and they played till 7am!

  • @animoceria no, this is the first part of the solo.. this is pure Duane (sigh), the second part of the song ( obviously not in this vid ) is the great dickey betts! cheers my friend!

  • @animoceria

Why would you say this is 99.99% dickey betts? I don't understand. This is Duane Allman. Dickey plays a solo directly after Duane's. Why would you say something when you don't really have any clue?

  • @animoceria This is Betts.

  • @pudinheadwilson Quit being a troll and read a caption and click on a link for once in your life. Seriously. Is it really that much harder to just look at the whole song than to post retarded "this is Betts" nonsense?

  • Stile and flawless of melodic playing obviously indicate that great Duane is playing...After 41 years,if many people is still listening to this 4 minutes miracle,so this guy has lived very short but left an unprecendent trace in this life...

  • My bad....It's Skydog.....Dickey's lead starts in about another 16 seconds.

  • That's Dickey.

  • This has to be one of the if not greatest songs from the 70's My memories of where I was when I played this 100 times a day. And still do. Happiest song I know!!!! I hope everyone's memories of this treasure are as good as mine

  • @Kitandroxandbec Mine are! Really the happiest song I know too. :D Peace and love bro.

  • no way is this Dicky's lead . As someone who has followed this since Duane was alive...if you play guitar at all...you just know it is Duane...listen to the riff structure...Dickey is more mechanical... Duane's les paul has his old layla era goldtop 1957 PAFs ' installed by then in the tobcacco sunburst......ask Twiggs....Duane's les paul 1959 sunburst is much more mellow (see Mountain jam)Dikceys is more raspy but hey what do I know/ I am just an old dog myself

  • Some facts about Blue Sky: was the last studio recording Duane did, released on Eat A Peach. He finished his solo and said that was as good as he could get it (no kidding). He goes first, then he and Dickey play dual harmony, then Dickey finishes up. The live album this version is from is ABB Live at Stonybrook University, 9/19/71 and is available as an archival recording at the ABB website store. The album is excellent throughout, a must have for original band fans-check out Dreams & Liz Reed.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY...SKYDOG.....my favorite guitar player!

  • Some of the world's finest guitar licks belong to Duane Allman , without any doubt .

Skydog lives on in our hearts forever . peace

  • ~NOVEMBER 20th~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Skydog! To the most amazing musican of my generation! In fact in my lifetime! You will NEVER be forgotten. We miss you, Duane Allman

  • my band just recorded this song at our school :) please go listen to it if you'd like and its with the original solo! :D took some time for that 1.

  • Does anybody realize this might be dicky betts? the guitar licks sound similar to the eat a peach solo played by betts himself, which allman was on acoustic rhythm. Just a thought....

  • @authorityblues I'm sure the whole song has got to be online here somewhere. You can buy the live album from Mycology Anthology, Hittin' the Note, and/or Frogwings Records last I checked. And this clip cuts off right before the bridge that leads into Dicky's solo, and his solo sounds very Bettsish in comparison, so yes, I am quite certain =)

  • @grantdabassman No, you are totally wrong. Duane plays this solo. If you are in doubt, play the CD or go to Smokyman1's download of the entire song here on YouTube and you can hear the following solo. If you can't recognize Dickey's licks in that solo, you are tone deaf.

  • @Muskratrowdy2 so i listened over and over - i'll agree with you. This is Duane.

  • @Muskratrowdy2 and thanks for the tip about Smokyman1's posting!

    What a gem.

  • @authorityblues In all due respect, on the studio recording, Duane Allman has the first lead, then Dickey Betts, then they both play. It is that simple. If you know how each artist played at the time, you would be able to discern the sound. Plus, Duane's guitar comes through on the left, then Dickey on the right.

  • @authorityblues Dickey and Duane *both* played lead on the Eat a Peach version of Blue Sky, as they both do here. Duane plays first, followed by Dickey.

  • it appears to me that MyBrotherMan enjoys this song

  • You simply cannot " LEARN " to play the guitar like this. It's from the soul---you either have it or you don't. And obviously Duane had it. God bless you SkyDog

  • i used to listen to this solo over and over

  • best solo ever

  • @mybrotherman...do you by chance have this whole show? or know where i can find it?

  • Heh, when I first started listening to good rock, I loved the electric guitar. I didn't really have a favorite until I heard Mark Knopfler. He was my favorite for over a year. Then I heard Duane Allman, and my mind was blown. Hearing his stuff on Hey Jude, Loan Me a Dime, Mountain Jam, Elizabeth Reed, Layla (that whole album...), You Don't Love Me, Statesboro Blues, et cetera, I was just in love. His guitar playing reaches me on another level. And to think I hadn't even heard THIS solo til now..

  • @TheOneThatGetsIt

you're welcome, if you have the anthology you probalby also listened to Road of Love with Clarence Carter, that solo is amazing too and it shows how diverse Duane was, he just blasts away almost like a saxophone or electrified harmonica and in this song he plays one of the most beautiful leadlines en melodies

  • @TheOneThatGetsIt

Bluetrain, Locomotion, Lazy Bird, My Shining Hour, his album "A Love Supreme" and his work with Miles Davis. I Don't know in how far those can be found in Elizabeth Reed but it's certainly a start. You should see iff you can get the album Push Push of Herbie Mann, Duane plays guitar on that album if you wanna hear his jazz influences.

  • @TheOneThatGetsIt Have you heard much Coltrane? Similar impeccable music-logic, at least to my ears.

  • At :16 or so sounds like Duane plays an open E with right hand finger picking as he gets the Coricidin bottle on for the rest of his solo.

  • i always tought Dickey did this solos, at least on the album version. Just seemed more like his melodic style of playing...

  • Wow. I've been listening to this solo EVERY SINGLE DAY for TWO years. I thought I had a problem. Now I know I'm not crazy...or that we all are. It's pure magic. Thanks all for posting...

  • You know how at different points in your life you have a default head-song? At least I always did. If no particular song were stuck in my head then there would be something a couple years long to take its place.

Well this solo has been like the trump. Beats all no matter what nor when. If you wish to get to know me in four minutes, then turn this on, close your eyes, sit quiet and still, and let nothing else in for 237 seconds. Then you shall know my own heart.

  • @MyBrotherMan Your heart is know MYbrotherman! I love Allman... Simple as that. 237 seconds of pure bliss.

  • @MyBrotherMan Wel Brother Man. I know your heart! Allman takes this song to highs and lows I've never known before. Rock on Brother Man!

  • @MyBrotherMan Very well stated my friend. Thanks for posting. breathtaking

  • @MyBrotherMan thats the great thing about music man! the connection you can make to other people in such a simple, unexplainable way.

  • @MyBrotherMan soul brothers

  • Sorry everyone, I just needed a slate to display for this video that looked good. It is entirely possible that he no longer possessed this guitar while playing this solo.

It just happens to be my favorite four minutes of music ever played. I actually only ever even posted it so that a cheesy crush of mine (at that time) could hear it. She hates me now. So does my girlfriend (began post-crush, FYI). That's why I need to hear this song again, and am back listening to it now. And posting this.

  • @MyBrotherMan He possessed that guitar for sure - Duane got rid of the Goldtop in late 1970, after he finished the Layla album. He swapped it for $200 and a 1959 Les Paul sunburstl, like he's playing here. In early 1971, he and Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) got matching tobacco-sunburst colored Les Pauls, and those were Skydog's axes until that fateful day in late October 1971....

  • I just realized the duration of this video is literally BANGIN' =D

  • Amazing how this song and Duane's solo just conjures up happily walking down a country road with not a care in the world. Kind of like the album art in the center of Eat a Peach.

  • beautiful man.....

  • just missed being here by 2 yrs '73, awesome- explains why the whole campus was still nuts for the Allmans <3

  • @Django5198 It was probably Hot'Lanta the tobacco sunburst Les Paul shown above. The Gold Top was traded away by the time this was recorded. Duane used Hot'Lanta for the Filmore Concerts and this was recorded after the Filmore.

  • LIVE ON SKYDOG!!!

  • For all guitarists out there: if you want to jam with this song play the E major mixolydian scale, if you are more of a beginner and dont know what that means try the C# (c sharp) minor penatonic (blues scale)

  • Thanks to whoever loaded this...Nobody can come closer to Duane in melodic, fluid playing..

  • This stuff gets me going in the morning.

  • Does anyone know what guitar he is playing here?

  • @redmaj11 most likely his goldtop les paul. That was the guitar he used for most of his work. He used an SG for slide.

  • And how well Berry Oakley played off Duane's riffs.

  • seriously this is so sweet

  • What could have been....

A Classic "Duane" solo 5 weeks before before the fatal motorcycle accident on 10/29/71

  • 1 of 3 known live versions of Blue Sky w/both Skydog and Dickey..... ; -(

still, it ROCKS ~ wail on Skydog!

  • @xneapolisx Four, there are four. Go to Sugarmegs and you can hear them all. Two of them aren't of the best quality, but you can still hear Duane's guitar. Pure magic!

  • @Muskratrowdy2 Thanks! Can never get enough Duane, especially w/the 40th anniversary of his passing approaching....what a sweet sound he coaxed from those guitars...thanks again.

  • One of the greats. Love his soothing playing.

  • One of the greats

  • You know, I have listened to this track so many times. And each time I am amazed at how at ease Duane played this. He is truly a Master.

  • Duane was ask one time which part he played on Layla and which park Eric played. Duane said he played the Gipson part and Eric played the Fender part...How rich is that?..lol

  • RIP duane

  • just finished the great book Skydog, by Randy Poe - if you are here and listening to this wondrous music then you should read that book...just sayin'

  • @calinder403 Agreed! It's fantastic from a personal and professional viewpoint. Randy Poe really did his homework!

  • Stunning - just the best electric guitar playing ever - this is up there with the best because it sings, not because it is technically difficult. This is what great musicians do - listen to, say, Rubinstein play Chopin - it is different 'cause he understood the message of the music. Duane had something - not sure what it was - and this piece captures it perfectly.

  • immortally....beautiful.

  • skydog soaring above the notes.. melts me everytime..

  • Clipped from Wiki article: Dickey Betts wrote this about his Native American girlfriend, Sandy "Bluesky" Wabegijig. Although Duane Allman was part of the recording of this song, he died before its release on Eat a Peach. Duane Allman and Dickey Betts played on the bridge solo - Duane going first followed by Dickey. They switch half way through - they can be heard synching up on a riff for two measures or so right around 2:30 into the track.

  • rock god

  • Did anyone here go to this concert? I think I was at this show... It was my 1st concert at age 15... My brother took me... I seem to remember that Duane broke a string on his guitar. He didn't reach for another guitar... He just wound up a new string while the rest of the band played on... I also remember the announcer saying that Jethro Tull was coming up like a week later... I'm really not sure if this was the same concert but I think it was! Can you believe that!

  • Comment removed

  • @sinsagoodmansbrother If your brother took you to SUNY.... State University of New York , then you were there!

  • @0819Marlene The reason I ask is the internet says that the Allmand Bros played 4 or 5 times at Stonybrook but that this particular contest was the first time the headlined the show... So I know I went to Stonybrook when I was 15 or 16... Just don't know if this was the exact concert I went to? I wish I would have yelled something out or something... It was my first concert! I do remember Duane broke a string and the band played on while he stood on stage and wound a new string on...

  • To me, the greatest guitar duet of all time. Allman and Betts. Doesn't get any better.

  • the most lyrical, gorgeous lines ever played in the rock guitar world.

  • @realitymodel2 perfectly stated..could not agree more..

  • Damn awesome.

  • I am 61 years old and I listen to this five times a day..No any guitar solo I know even close to this..No logic and judgement in this life..billions of rubbish shit machines who call themselves human live and he dies at 25...

  • @tosa275 Man your an old F**K! Just turned 61 myself. LOL! This is to me the greatest duet ever.

  • FUCKING WOW,DUANE AND DICKEY FOREVER!

  • I'm 63 years old,

    and when I hear this,

everything I went through to get here, is all worthwhile.

  • Agreed with Lowell. I would loved to see Duane and the ABB live.

  • pure Mozart !

  • Robert Johnson

    Jimi Hendrix

    Stevie Ray Vaughan

    Duane Allman

What do these people have in common? They died so they could give God guitar lessons.

  • @TheJediRabbit I might add Lowell George to the list...

  • Unbealievble Most beautiful guitar solo in universe...

  • As Duane said "Dickey is the good guitar player I am the famous one." But Those guys were a pair.

  • Anybody notice Duane is wearing the same shirt that he wore in the gatefold of Derek and The Dominoes album "Layla?"

  • God has decided to show his music through Duane to mankind....

  • Duane was unique and still so....How soulfull, melodic and technically supreme guitarist..Very rare that these gathered in one musician..

  • Ahh, the beautiful sounds of the days when rock also rolled. RIP Duane, you were a great inspiration to my playing Skydog!

  • Duane ...the most natural conduit of heaven-sent slide guitar you could hope for - incomparable!
