Honestly, UMD is one of the most segregated universities (and possibly racist) campuses in the nation. I transferred from a university that I had no problem befriending people from outside my race. Here, you have no chance to define yourself, but are labeled by your skin/ethnicity.
And if you're a non-stereotypical (smart, modest, assimilated) black male, definitely don't go here unless you have VERY GOOD friends from high school who are going to UMD.
Yea, I made this film for a class project. I actually brought all the people I interviewed into the class the day I showed the film to the class and interviewed them live. I still have to post the results online. There is an ending coming soon.
it seems that no matter how hard a person tries, he or she will never be one of them and there will always be an awkward situation. a perfect example is when people intentionally speak to each other in their native tongue right in front of you. they are probably not making fun of you, but it is still very disrespectful. so when people talk about the diverse campus here, i can't help but laugh in my mind.
i definately agree that there is segregation at umd. i try not to solely associate with members of my own race, but i see others do it all the time. another thing, when trying to be friends with a group of people that only hang out with their own race, it is very difficult to break that barrier.

What's wrong with natural segregation - if you want to sit around the table with your friends, and if they happen to be your own race - surely that's your right. Forced integration is totally unnatural and leads to all kinds of problems. Mutual respect for each others identity is just as important as freedom of association.
this is a good documentary. At maryland, on my dorm room floor i was shocked that there were racial slurs on one of my hallmates doors, calling him an "n" word. We may have a technically diverse campus, but the integration of those students with eachother is almost...nonexistant.

What is this supposed to prove? We don't see the results of the survey? Is there going to be a part two?
